Fascioliasis is a globally distributed, parasitic zoonosis, caused by Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica. A comprehensive overview of the epidemiology of human fascioliasis in Africa is missing up to now. Therefore, our objective was to conduct a systematic review aiming to summarize recent knowledge on the distribution, prevalence, and risk factors of human fascioliasis in Africa. A key word search was performed in PubMed, Web of Science and Africa Wide, to gather relevant literature, published between the 1st of January 2000 and 31st of December 2020. A total of 472 records were initially re…

Fascioliasis is a trematode flatworm infection caused by Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica. Fasciola hepatica is mesoendemic in Turkey. Six cases of pediatric fascioliasis are presented here. All patients had histories of consumption of various raw vegetables. Four of our patients were at the hepatic phase, and two were at the biliary phase. Except for one patient, all patients had eosinophilia. In three patients, total IgE levels were markedly increased. In these patients, there was an eosinophilic leukomoid reaction accompanied by a high total IgE level. Except for one of our patients, all …

We report a case of a 39 year old male who presented with nausea and right upper quadrant pain. Marked eosinophilia and a hypoechoic liver lesion on ultrasound were identified. The differential diagnosis included neoplasms, infectious diseases and hepatic abscess. Indirect hemagglutination test using purified adult Fasciola hepatica f1Ag confirmed serologic diagnosis of fascioliasis. Radiologists should keep in mind the importance of correlating imaging, clinical and laboratory findings in order to reach the correct diagnosis.

CONTEXT: Fasciola hepatica is known to cause bile duct inflammation and biliary obstruction but is rarely reported as responsible for producing acute pancreatitis.
CASE REPORT: We report on a patient complaining of acute pancreatitis. Endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography showed distinct features and sphincterotomy allowed extraction of multiple parasites.
CONCLUSIONS: Pancreatitis may occur in some patients with fascioliasis, but the condition may be overlooked in chronic cases. Endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography rule out other possible causes of irregularity and thic…

A 40 year-old woman living in Gialai, Kontum, Vietnam, developed a red solid mass in the epigastric region. From ultrasound investigation, liver abscess and myositis of the intercostal muscle was diagnosed. Two weeks after treatment with antibiotics, the mass disappeared, but a migratory track developed in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen. An aspiration of the vesicular end of the serpiginous track showed a light brown, living worm that was later identified as an immature Fasciola sp. This is the first case report of cutaneous fascioliasis in the form similar to creeping eruption.

Considered a secondary zoonotic disease until the mid-1990s, human fascioliasis is at present emerging or re-emerging in many countries, including increases of prevalence and intensity and geographical expansion. Research in recent years has justified the inclusion of fascioliasis in the list of important human parasitic diseases. At present, fascioliasis is a vector-borne disease presenting the widest known latitudinal, longitudinal and altitudinal distribution. Fasciola hepatica has succeeded in expanding from its European original geographical area to colonize five continents, despite theor…

Three patients with abdominal pain were studied and through ultrasonography, it was suspected that they had Fasciola hepatica in their gallbladder and choedochio. By using endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), the presence of parasites in extrahepatic biliary passages of the cases was confirmed and then, it was taken out with a Dormia basket. It was concluded that imaging is a diagnostic means to be considered in this parasitosis.

Fascioliasis is now imposing itself as a zoonotic disease in sheep and cattle raising countries. In Egypt, human fascioliasis is increasing. During the years 1994 to 1997 the overall slaughtered animals in Egyptian abattoirs was 2,003,200 sheep and goats, 2,624,239 cattle and 3,536,744 buffaloes. The overall rates of fascioliasis were 2.02% for sheep and goats, 3.54% for cattle and 1.58% for buffaloes. Macroscopic examination of sheep liver showed up to 100 flukes per liver inside a largely dilated thick walled bile ducts. Cattle liver showed up to 275 flukes per liver inside thickened dilated…

These are the observation found in ten children with fascioliasis diagnosis at the Servicio de Parasitología, of the Instituto Nacional de Pediatría, from 1979 to 1990; six children in scholar age; one prescholar and three teenagers; only one was female. Four of them lined at the State of Mexico; three at Morelos; one at Puebla, another one at Oaxaca and the other one at Mexico City. In nine of the watercress eaten was confirmed. Lymnaea auricularia race rufescens and Lymnaea luteola were shown to transmit F. gigantica in the Koshi hills of Nepal. The ecology of the snails was studied at nine different habitats in Hattikharka panchayat, the highest numbers occurring immediately after the end of the monsoon. Mature F. gigantica infections in the snails were detected from May to August and again in November. The prevalence of the infection in cattle was highest during the summer monsoon and in January and February. A control programme for fascioliasis based on these findings is suggested which requires that cattle be tre…

Ten patients suffering from fascioliasis were treated with praziquantel. In two patients, egg counts dropped to zero following treatment, but there was no significant reduction in egg counts in the other eight.
