Although it is generally assumed that fathers are absent from the lives of children being raised on AFDC, evidence from a case-control study in Worcester, Massachusetts, suggests that there is considerable father-child contact. In addition, multivariate modeling indicates that contact with fathers had a modest beneficial effect on children's behavior. Based on these study findings, negative traits of fathers (e.g., substance abuse, physical violence) appear to be associated with increased child behavior problems.

The views of fathers of young families on health education were obtained using questionnaires issued through Maternity Health Care Clinics and Well-Baby Clinics. The present study is part of the Finnish Family Competence Study. The first phase of the study included 1,414 fathers whose wives were expecting their first baby. Of them, 1,279 returned a questionnaire. In the second phase, at week 28 of the wife's pregnancy, 1,123 fathers returned a questionnaire. A third questionnaire issued when the baby was born was completed by 1,134 fathers. A further questionnaire issued three months after the…

The mean paternal age at birth of 80 presumed mutant cases of dominant osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) was significantly higher than that of po … ly lower than, for example, in achondroplasia. The overall risk of fresh dominant mutation in older fathers may therefore be lower than has previously been suggested.

I offer a psychoanalytic interpretation of The Phantom of the Opera as an allegory of father-daughter incest and psychological recovery. Christine Daaé's journey illustrates the internal dynamics of trauma-denial, dissociation, and identification with the abuser-while her final confrontation with the Phantom symbolizes the reclamation of agency and selfhood. Drawing on symbolic actions such as unmasking and descent into the unconscious, the analysis explores how narrative, performance, and relational support can reflect the nonlinear process of healing. Ultimately, Christine's transformation f

Dr. Joseph J. Volpe, a prominent figure in neonatal neurology, has made many important contributions to the understanding and treatment of brain injuries in newborns, particularly premature infants. Over his 60-year career, Volpe conducted pioneering research in the basic and clinical aspects of neonatal brain development and pathology. He played a key role in advancing neonatal care, improving outcomes for premature infants, and shaping the field of neonatal neurology. Volpe's early neurology career at Harvard Medical School and later work at Massachusetts General Hospital and Washington Univ

BACKGROUND: Being present during labour and birth can, for some fathers, result in feelings of fear, uncertainty, anxiety, and helplessness. Witnessing birth complications or adverse events may cause immediate and long-term anxiety and stress. In turn, this experience can impact on men's sense of self and identity as a man and father and can affect his relationship with his infant and partner. The aim of this study was to explore the immediate and longer-term impact of witnessing a complicated or adverse birth experiences on men in heterosexual relationships and their role as a father.

The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of fathers with scleroderma. Ten fathers with scleroderma were interviewed by telephone. Interviews were tape-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Two key themes emerged related to the emotional impact of the illness and the day to day realities of the illness with the unpredictability and rareness of the illness leading to ongoing feelings of isolation and fear of mortality. The negative influences of being a father with scleroderma included the inability of the fathers to participate in physical activities with their children such as ou…

Sir Denis John Wolko Browne (1892-1967), while not the first in the British Isles to devote his entire surgical practice to pediatric surgery, is accepted as "the father of pediatric surgery in the United Kingdom." He made contributions to operations as varied as tonsillectomy, pyloromyotomy, and hypospadias repair, and provided fundamental insights into the proper treatment of club foot, congenital dislocation of the hip, and cryptorchidism. He introduced the transverse laparotomy incision, primary repair of congenital intestinal obstruction, and the end-to-back anastomosis for intestinal atr

Among the fathers of transsphenoidal surgery, a relevant role should be reserved for Cesare Cavina (1888-1935). He had the merit to develop and popularize in Italy this approach for pituitary tumors, performing 47 transsphenoidal hypophysectomies out of his personal series of 66 patients between 1927 and 1935. He contributed to this surgery by introducing radiological control of the surgical trajectory to reduce the risk of complications and increase the safety of this approach. We think that both his short lifespan (he died when he was 47 years old) and the language of his papers (Italian and…

We describe a case of infectious mononucleosis (IM) hepatitis occurring in an elderly thespian, who had recently played the role of 'Father Christmas'. We discuss the importance of differing clinical manifestations in older and younger age groups, the changing epidemiology of Epstein Barr (EB) infection within the United Kingdom and the role of different virology tests in establishing a diagnosis. Raised awareness of this changing pattern of disease could prevent unnecessary investigation and consequent potential iatrogenic complications.

Ludwik Rydygier is undoubtedly the father of Polish gastrointestinal surgery. He performed two pioneering stomach operations: on 16 November 1880, first in Poland and second in the world after Jules Pean, the surgical removal of the pylorus in a 64-year-old patient suffering from stomach cancer; the operation took about four hours, unfortunately the patient died 12 hours later, and on 21 November 1881 he performed the world's first pylorectomy due to gastric ulcer, applying his own method of pylorectomy followed by the restoration by end-to-end anastomosis of the duodenal stump with the stomac

OBJECTIVE: To examine the progress in their schooling of maternal and paternal orphans in a province of South Africa with high AIDS mortalit … ated with falling behind at school.
DISCUSSION: Both the substantial benefits of living with their fathers for children's schooling and the limited importance of maternal orphanhood conflict with the results of most studies in this issue, including those of other research in the same part of South Africa. These findings caution against drawing general co …

J. Marion Sims (1813-1884) has been called the "Father of Gynecology" for his revolutionary approach to treating the diseases of women. He rose from humble origins to become a successful surgeon, teacher, and writer. His innovations included the first successful treatment for vesicovaginal fistula, the first gallbladder surgery, and the introduction of antiseptic principles in all areas of surgical treatment. The "Sims position" and "Sims speculum" are eponymic tributes to his accomplishments. In recent years Sims has, however, become a focus of controversy because of his experimental surgerie
