This study describes the use of diatomaceous earth during solid-phase extraction as an efficient sorbent for separation and concentration of dodecanol and ethoxylated dodecanol containing 1-9 ethoxyl groups. The efficiency of different eluents was evaluated for model samples which allowed to select methanol and chloroform for tests with river water samples. During model experiments, it was observed that the recovery rates of specific compounds in the studied mixture were influenced by the character of the solvent used for desorption. Hydrophobic compounds, such as dodecanol and ethoxylated dod

The global prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is nearly 25% and is increasing rapidly. The spectrum of liver damage in NAFLD ranges from simple steatosis to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, characterised by the presence of lobular inflammation and hepatocyte ballooning degeneration, with or without fibrosis, which can further develop into cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Not only is NAFLD a progressive liver disease, but numerous pieces of evidence also point to extrahepatic consequences. Accumulating evidence suggests that patients with NAFLD are also at increased ri

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is believed to be the driver for future development of fibrosis and cirrhosis. Nevertheless, there remains a clear deficit in non-invasive methods for the diagnosis of NASH. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence of portal lymphadenopathy (PL) in biopsy- proven NAFLD patients and to determine whether PL correlates with NAFLD stage and severity.
METHODS: A retrospective study included biopsy-proven NAFLD patients with up to date (within one year) abdomin

Obesity is in epidemic proportions in many parts of the world, contributing to increasing rates of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NAFLD represents a range of conditions from the initial stage of fatty liver to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which can progress to severe fibrosis, through to hepatocellular carcinoma. There currently exists no treatment for the long-term management of NAFLD/NASH, however, dietary interventions have been investigated for the treatment of NASH, including several polyphenolic compounds. Ellagic acid is one such polyphenolic compound. Nutraceutical

BACKGROUND: Dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4) is a serine exopeptidase able to inactivate various oligopeptides, and also a hepatokine. Hepatocyte-specific overexpression of DPP4 is associated with hepatic insulin resistance and liver steatosis.
METHOD: We examined whether weekly DPP4 inhibitor omarigliptin (OMG) can improve liver function as well as levels of inflammation and insulin resistance in type 2 diabetic patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Further, we investigated the effects of OMG in a diabetic patient with biopsy-confirmed nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease prevalence has not been well established. The aims of this study was to define prospectively non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) prevalence in hospitalized and ambulatory patients 20-65 years old during June 2013 to June 2014 were selected from Combined Military Hospital Peshawar Cantonment area. A base line questionnaire and right upper quadrant ultrasound was completed by all patients. On identifications of fatty liver among the selected cases further lab test data and liver biopsy reports were obtained. Mean BM

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Pharmacological approaches can potentially improve fatty liver condition in alcoholic and non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases. The salutary effects of reducing lipid synthesis or promoting lipid oxidation have been well reported, but the benefits of increasing lipid degradation have yet to be well explored. Macroautophagy is a cellular degradation process that can remove subcellular organelles including lipid droplets. We thus investigated whether pharmacological modulation of macroautophagy could be an effective approach to alleviate fatty liver condition and liver injury.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Population screening for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and associated comorbidities remains an unaddressed clinical need. We aimed to assess the utility of the fatty liver index (FLI) for risk stratification of NAFLD and related comorbidities using the UK Biobank.
METHODS: Electronic health records and liver MRI-proton density fat fraction (PDFF) were used to define NAFLD cases. FLI was calculated and individuals with high alcohol intake and other liver diseases were excluded. Using listwise deletion analysis, the area under receiver-operating characteristic cur

BACKGROUND: Scant West African data on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) means there is little representation of this population in the modelling used to derive biomarkers and predictive indices for risk stratification of patients for the presence of hepatic steatosis. This study evaluates the performance of the fatty liver index (FLI), hepatic steatosis index (HSI) and triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and its derivatives in predicting ultrasound detected NAFLD in a locally resident population of Ghanaian participants.

BACKGROUND: The amount and type of dietary fat seem to be important factors that modulate the development of alcohol-induced liver steatosis and fibrosis. Various alcohol-feeding studies in animals have been used to model some of the symptoms that occur in liver disease in humans.
METHODS: Rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were maintained on a diet that had a very low concentration of alpha-linolenic acid and were given free access to an artificially sweetened 7% ethanol solution. Control and ethanol-consuming animals were maintained on a diet in which the linoleate content was adequate (1.4% o

Alcohol has at least two actions on essential fatty acid (EFA) and Prostaglandin (PG) metabolism. It enhances the conversion of dihomogammalinolenic acid (DGLA) to PGE1 but it blocks the activity of the delta-6-desaturase, an enzyme necessary for replenishment of DGLA stores from dietary precursors. The acute effect of ethanol is therefore an increased production of PGE1 but chronic consumption will lead to depletion of DGLA and PGE1. Withdrawal from alcohol will lead to a precipitous fall in PGE1. PGE1 is known to have profound effects on the nervous system and behaviour. Patients with mania

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence suggests a potential relationship between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and fatty pancreas, as both conditions are associated with fat deposition in the liver and pancreas, respectively. The meta-analysis aimed to investigate the bidirectional association between NAFLD and fatty pancreas, as well as their respective effects on disease severity.
METHODS: A systematic search of the EMBASE and MEDLINE databases, from inception to August 2022, was conducted to identify observational studies examining the association between NAFLD and fatty pancreas, a

The etiology of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) consists of various factors, including neural signal pathways. However, the molecular mechanisms of the autonomic neural signals influencing NAFLD progression have not been elucidated. Therefore, we examined the involvement of the gut-liver neural axis in NAFLD development and tested the therapeutic effect of modulation of this axis in this study. To test the contribution of the gut-liver neural axis, we examined NAFLD progression with respect to body weight, hepatic steatosis, fibrosis, intestinal tight junction, microbiota and short-c

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Dysfunction of the intestinal barrier was an important trigger for alcoholic liver damage and alcohol had brought about intestinal damage before causing liver damage. The root of Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels, crucial traditional medicinal material, was widely utilized for its blood-invigorating, intestinal-lubricating and gynecological benefits. Angelica sinensis polysaccharide (ASP) was an essential natural active ingredient of Angelica sinensis and exhibited considerable potential for gastrointestinal protection. Nevertheless, the systematic research of ASP
