INTRODUCTION: Stercoral colitis caused by fecal impaction can lead to life-threatening ischemic injury of the colon. However, accurately assessing the severity and reversibility of ischemia remains challenging, particularly when determining the appropriate extent of surgical resection.

Perianal basal cell carcinoma is an exceedingly rare malignancy that may mimic benign anorectal conditions or anal squamous cell carcinoma. We report an 84-year-old man with a several-year history of a progressively enlarging circumferential perianal lesion, complicated by constipation, chronic fecal incontinence, bleeding, and significant weight loss. Syncope is a common presentation in the emergency department (ED); however, it is rarely due to stercoral proctocolitis causing inferior vena cava (IVC) compression. We describe the case of a young male patient who presented to the ED after having a syncopal episode. Faecal incontinence occurring at least once weekly was found in 10.3% of residents in 30 residential homes for the elderly. Fifty-two randomly-selected incontinent residents were prescribed treatment and the outcome was compared with 30 incontinent residents acting as controls. The vast majority of all incontinent residents showed evidence of chronic brain failure (dementia). Incontinence had been present for over a year in 73%, yet only 4% had been referred to their general practitioner. Incarceration of inguinal hernia in children is not a very rare occurrence. The incidence of incarceration of hernia is about 12-17% in children below 10 years of age and two-thirds of incarcerations occur during the first year of life. Sigmoid colon as a content of childhood hernia is a very rare occurrence. We report a case of child with incarceration of inguinal hernia caused by impaction of feces in a loop of sigmoid colon. To the best of my knowledge this will be the first case report of such a finding in children.

An elderly man presented with abdominal pain and signs of peritonitis. Emergency laparotomy was performed and a stercoral perforation of the cecum was found with a large scybalum plugging the defect. The patient was treated with right colectomy and a stoma was formed from the terminal ileum and transverse colon. Stercoral perforation of the colon is extremely unusual and carries high morbidity and mortality. The etiology, diagnosis and treatment of the condition are briefly discussed.

Meconium ileus equivalent (MIE) can be defined as a clinical manifestation in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients caused by acute intestinal obstruction by putty-like faecal material in the cecum or terminal ileum. A broader definition includes a more chronic condition in CF patients with abdominal pain and a coecal mass which may eventually pass spontaneously. Stercoraceous perforation of the colon is most often unsuspected and is usually diagnosed at operation or autopsy. Abdominal radiographs show large fecal masses in the rectum and sigmoid colon, and occasionally lying free in the peritoneal cavity. Free intraperitoneal air is present.
