Yellow fever.

Yellow fever, a mosquito-borne flavivirus disease occurs in tropical areas of South America and Africa. It is a disease of major historical importance, but remains a threat to travelers to and residents of endemic areas despite the availability of an effective vaccine for nearly 70 years. An important aspect is the receptivity of many non-endemic areas to introduction and spread of yellow fever. This paper reviews the clinical aspects, pathogenesis, and epidemiology of yellow fever, with an emphasis on recent changes in the distribution and incidence of the disease. Recent knowledge about yell…

Q Fever.

Q fever is a zoonotic disease caused by the ubiquitous pathogen Coxiella burnetii responsible for acute and chronic clinical manifestations. Farm animals and pets are the main reservoirs of infection, and transmission to human beings is mainly accomplished through inhalation of contaminated aerosols. This illness is associated with a wide clinical spectrum, from asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic seroconversion to fatal disease. In humans Q fever can manifest as an acute disease (mainly as a self-limited febrile illness, pneumonia, or hepatitis) or as a chronic disease (mainly endocarditis), e…

Q fever.

Q fever is a worldwide zoonosis caused by the pathogen Coxiella burnetii causing acute and chronic clinical manifestations. The name "Q fever" derives from "Query fever" and was given in 1935 following an outbreak of febrile illness in an abattoir in Queensland, Australia. C burnetii is considered a potential agent of bioterrorism (class B by the Centers for Disease Control).

[Q fever].

Coxiella burnetii, the causative agent of Q fever, is a Gram negative coccobacillus. It resides and replicates in the host s monocytes and macrophages. The developmental cycle of C. burnetii includes macrocellular and microcellular forms and the formation of spore-like bodies. It undergoes a phase variation of outer cell surface antigens from virulent phase I to avirulent phase II after passaging in the yolk sac of embryonated chicken eggs or in cell cultures. C. burnetii belongs to the most resistant bacteria. The main reservoirs of C. burnetii are cattle, sheep and goats. Human Q fever usual…

[Q fever].

Q fever is a zoonosis caused by Coxiella burnetii. The infection is transmitted to humans mainly through aerosols generated from products of delivery of cows and other animals. Generally the disease presents acutely with fever, pneumonitis and hepatitis. But chronic endocarditis is also a possible occurrence. Diagnosis is usually made by serology. The acute form of the infection responds well to tetracyclines and other antibiotics. But endocarditis is difficult to treat, and its prognosis is grim.

Q fever.

An outbreak of Q fever occurred in Scotland during this summer and was reported in news headlines. Despite these newsworthy headlines, Q fever remains poorly understood. The causative organism, Coxiella burnetii, has a worldwide distribution, with the notable exception of New Zealand. Even with its ubiquitous nature, Q fever is rarely reported. We explore some of the underlying reasons for this apparent under diagnosis together with some of the diagnostic challenges posed by this obligate intracellular pathogen. The host range for this microbe spans arthropods, through to birds and a diverse r…

Typhoid Fever.

Typhoid fever is caused by infection with Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi. The completion of the genome sequence of two Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi isolates is leading to new insights into the biology of this pathogen. Approximately 16 million cases occur worldwide each year. The lack of culture facilities in endemic areas and the poor performance of the Widal test means the disease is frequently unconfirmed. Simple new serologic tests are being developed and show promise. Resistance to chloramphenicol, ampicillin, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole is widespread in Asia and some areas …

[Yellow fever].

Yellow fever is a mosquito born viral illness that causes hemorrhagic fever in tropical Africa and South America. An estimated 200 000 people are still infected annually. There is no antiviral therapy available and vaccination is major strategy in the control yellow fever. From 60 years ago is available very safe and efficient vaccine. The vaccine is a live attenuated virus strain 17D. Recently identified vaccine associated viscerotropic diseases (YFV-AVD). This paper describes knowledge about yellow fever disease, vaccine associated adverse events and actually recommendation for vaccine use.
