An account is given of some aspects of poisonings sustained by coming into contact with animals of the coral reefs of the Fiji Islands. Poisonings can be grouped into those in which the toxin is introduced parenterally-envenomings, and those in which it is ingested. Illustrative case histories are presented of injuries from 2 echinoderms and of envenoming from the "deadly" stonefish. A therapeutic approach to puffer-fish poisoning is mentioned and the problem of ciguatera poisoning is outlined.

In March 2006, an outbreak of conjunctivitis that occurred over a six day period among twenty-nine individuals who partook in recreational scuba diving trips on two boats off Vitu Levu Island, Fiji. We investigated the likelihood that a communal container used to store diving masks facilitated the spread of conjunctivitis among individuals. A case report of a female newborn with a rare congenital abdominal wall defect associated with intestinal malformation. To our knowledge, only a few case reports of left sided congenital abdominal wall defect with this type of anomalies have been reported in the world literatures and this is the first in Fiji. This case brought numerous challenges to the team in terms of defining the pathology, role of undertaking surgery, providing supportive and nutritional therapy to a neonate and the ethical dilemma with the management in a developing country.
