Financial burden of epidermolysis bullosa on patients in the United States.

Individuals with epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a group of genodermatoses with skin fragility, often require specialized and expensive bandaging. We analyzed the results from an online survey of 249 EB patients and caregivers living in the United States to investigate the financial impact of EB. Of respondents with severe EB subtypes (recessive dystrophic and junctional), 73% reported a major or moderate financial impact and 26% spent greater than $1000 per month on wound care supplies. These results demonstrate the high financial burden associated with epidermolysis bullosa in the United States

Maternal perspectives: The needs of Saudi families of children with Down's syndrome.

Down syndrome (DS) is a chromosomal condition that is affecting an increasing number of infants born in Saudi Arabia. This study investigates the needs of families with children with DS in Saudi Arabia from mothers' perspectives and in a cultural and religious context. An exploratory qualitative research design was used, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 mothers of children with DS. Interview data were thematically analyzed. The most important need was found to be financial or tangible support. An increase in benefits or monthly financial allowances and social security insu

Medical and social service provision for families of children with NTD.

The supply of services to the families of children with spina bifida participating in the South Wales longitudinal study was reviewed. Initially general information and contact with other mothers were the commonest needs; as the children grew older the need for practical, material and financial help took priority. Parents were, generally, very satisfied with support provided by hospital staff with whom they had frequent, regular contact. Contact with health visitors and social workers was considered insufficient and unsatisfactory. Mothers of more severely disabled children were most likely to

Food insecurity and nutritional vulnerability in women with cancer: financial toxicity as a driver of survivorship inequities.

Food insecurity is an underrecognized determinant of nutritional vulnerability among women with cancer. Although oncology nutrition guidelines increasingly emphasize early screening, dietitian referral, body-composition preservation, and survivorship-oriented dietary patterns, many women experience financial toxicity after diagnosis through out-of-pocket medical costs, income loss, transportation expenses, caregiving disruption, and competing household needs. These economic pressures can restrict access to adequate, safe, and nutrient-dense foods, thereby worsening malnutrition risk, diet qual

Who is at Risk? Social Support, Relationship Dissolution, and Illness in a Rural Context.

This study focuses on a cohort of adults (40-plus) in rural South Africa to unpack associations between physical health and receipt of social support, and the extent to which these associations were moderated by marital status. We use logistic regression to estimate the odds of having received emotional, physical, or financial support separately for men (N = 2247) and women (N = 2609). Our results suggest having an Activity of Daily Living (ADL) limitation or having at least one chronic condition was not significantly associated with social support receipt for women, but having an ADL limitati…

Who benefits from nutritional support: what is the evidence?

Nutritional support, including oral nutritional supplements, enteral tube feeding and parenteral nutrition, can be an important part of the management of any patient. Malnutrition is common and costly, clinically and financially, if left untreated. In patients with, or at risk of, malnutrition, the appropriate use of nutritional support can prevent complications arising, produce other clinical, functional and financial benefits, and can be life saving in some situations. This article discusses the evidence from systematic reviews and meta-analyses of the effectiveness of nutritional support.

Understanding the healthcare services and social support needs of patients with end-stage kidney disease in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: End-Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) is a significant health issue that poses various social and healthcare challenges. More Than Health: Long-Term Care Insurance Reshaping Family Support in Aging China.

China's rapidly aging population has strained traditional family-based elder care, leading to the introduction of Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI) as a government-supported solution. Using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and employing Difference-in-Differences (DID) and Triple-Difference (DDD) methodologies, this study explores LTCI's impact on intergenerational financial transfers within households. The findings demonstrate that LTCI significantly increases financial support from elderly parents to adult children by reducing elder care-related economic bur…

[Moderate financial incentives for organ donation].

Despite many efforts to increase the number of organs for transplantations, there is still a worrying shortage of transplantable organs - in Germany as well as in almost every developed country. One possibility to increase the amount of organs is the introduction of financial incentives for cadaveric organ donation. In this article, several forms of moderate financial incentives for organ donation are described. Ethical arguments for and against an implementation of financial incentives are weighed against each other. Finally, an argument is developed in favour of moderate financial incentives

A Gambling Financial Harm Screener (GFHS) for Payment Institutions: Multi-Method Development and Preliminary Validation.

Disordered gambling, a form of behavioral addiction characterized by persistent gambling despite harmful consequences, is inherently associated with financial harm. While established diagnostic instruments exist, they are primarily designed for clinical or gambling-service contexts and are not readily applicable within financial system infrastructures that process gambling-related transactions. The current study describes the development and initial validation of the Gambling Financial Harm Screener (GFHS), a psychometrically grounded instrument designed to assess gambling-related harm through

Longitudinal and reciprocal associations between financial strain, home characteristics and mobility in the National Health and Aging Trends Study.

BACKGROUND: Older adults need homes that suit their physical capacity. Financial strain may limit home repairs and modifications and prompt relocations; repairing, relocating or modifying may increase financial strain. Likewise, reciprocal relationships may exist between financial strain and home characteristics and mobility; financial strain and home characteristics may influence mobility and mobility declines may increase financial strain, limit home repairs and modifications and prompt relocations. We test cross-lagged associations between financial strain, home disorder, relocation, home m

Financial toxicity and psychological distress in cardiovascular non-cancer multimorbidity: a latent profile analysis and causal weighting.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease with multimorbidity imposes substantial long-term financial burdens. Financial toxicity, the financial burden associated with healthcare, is increasingly recognized as a psychosocial stressor affecting health outcomes among chronically ill populations. However, its psychological heterogeneity in non-cancer patients is understudied. We aimed to identify financial toxicity profiles, their determinants, and associations with anxiety/depression in cardiovascular non-cancer multimorbidity. METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional design. Utilizing latent profil
