Visual fixation in Chiari type II malformation.

Chiari type II malformation is a congenital deformity of the hindbrain. Square wave jerks are horizontal involuntary saccades that interrupt fixation. Cerebellar disorders may be associated with frequent square wave jerks or saccadic oscillations such as ocular flutter. The effects of Chiari type II malformation on visual fixation are unknown. We recorded eye movements using an eye tracker in 21 participants with Chiari type II malformation, aged 8 to 19 years while they fixated a target for 1 minute. Thirty-eight age-matched healthy participants served as controls. Square wave jerks' paramete

Gillies elevation and percutaneous Kirschner wire fixation in the treatment of simple zygoma fractures: long-term quantitative outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The objective of zygoma fracture repair is to restore preinjury function and appearance. The optimal surgical technique represents a balance between accurate fracture reduction and soft-tissue morbidity. METHODS: Fifty patients were eligible for review after treatment for isolated simple zygoma fractures using a combination of Gillies elevation and percutaneous Kirschner wire fixation between 1992 and 2003. Fourteen patients were available for examination at a mean follow-up of 8.7 years. Quantifiable parameters, including orbitozygomatic complex position, ocular globe projection,

Stabilization of gaze: a relationship between ciliary muscle contraction and trapezius muscle activity.

In an experimental study four levels of oculomotor load were induced binocularly. Trapezius muscle activity was measured with bipolar surface electromyography and normalized to a submaximal contraction. Twenty-eight subjects with a mean age of 29 (range 19-42, std 8) viewed a high-contrast fixation target for four 5-min periods through: (i) -3.5 dioptre (D) lenses; (ii) 0 D lenses; (iii) individually adjusted prism D lenses (1-2 D base out); and (iv) +3.5 D lenses. The target was placed close to the individual's age-appropriate near point of accommodation in conditions (i-iii) and at 3m in con

When purple perceived only at fixation: A fixation- and distance-dependent color illusion.

In this paper, an optical illusion is described in which purple elements are perceived as purple at the point of fixation, while surrounding elements of the same purple color are perceived toward a blue hue. As the viewing distance increases, a greater number of purple elements revert to a purple appearance.

What one sees depends on how far the eye has moved.

Humans explore visual scenes through frequent, rapid gaze shifts known as saccades. These movements redirect the high-acuity region of the retina toward objects of interest, thus selecting information based on location. Here, we show that saccade amplitude provides a separate and complementary form of selection, effectively filtering visual information by spatial frequency rather than location. Building on analyses of the resulting visual input signals, we examined how pattern visibility was influenced by the size of the preceding saccade. A reduction in saccade amplitude attenuates post-sacca

Aberrant Effective Connectivity During Eye Gaze Processing Is Linked to Social Functioning and Symptoms in Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Patients with schizophrenia show abnormal gaze processing, which is associated with social dysfunction. These abnormalities are related to aberrant connectivity among brain regions that are associated with visual processing, social cognition, and cognitive control. In this study, we investigated 1) how effective connectivity during gaze processing is disrupted in schizophrenia and 2) how this may contribute to social dysfunction and clinical symptoms. METHODS: Thirty-nine patients with schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder (SZ) and 33 healthy control participants completed an eye

Neural basis of social attention: common and distinct mechanisms for social and nonsocial orienting stimuli.

Social and nonsocial directional stimuli (such as gaze and arrows, respectively) share their ability to trigger attentional processes, although the issue of whether social stimuli generate other additional (and unique) attentional effects is still under debate. In this study, we used the spatial interference paradigm to explore, using functional magnetic resonance imaging, shared and dissociable brain activations produced by gaze and arrows. Results showed a common set of regions (right parieto-temporo-occipital) similarly involved in conflict resolution for gaze and arrows stimuli, which show

Monitoring Eye Movements Depending on the Type of Visual Stimulus in Patients with Impaired Consciousness Due to Brain Damage.

The eyeballs are often the only way to communicate messages as a result of brain damage. However, it is not uncommon for them to become dysfunctional, thus requiring the introduction of appropriate therapy. The trajectory of eye movements (saccadic movements and gaze fixation) during observation of a static and dynamic point presented with an eye tracker was analyzed in the present study. Twelve patients with brain injury of different etiology, with different degrees of consciousness disorders and not communicating through verbal and motor skills, qualified for the study. All participants demo

Gaze Strategies in Skateboard Trick Jumps: Spatiotemporal Constraints in Complex Locomotion.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to further the knowledge on gaze behavior in locomotion by studying gaze strategies in skateboard jumps of different difficulty that had to be performed either with or without an obstacle. METHOD: Nine experienced skateboarders performed "Ollie" and "Kickflip" jumps either over an obstacle or over a plane surface. The stable gaze at 5 different areas of interest was calculated regarding its relative duration as well as its temporal order. RESULTS: During the approach phase, an interaction between area of interest and obstacle condition, F(3, 24) = 12.91, p <  .05, η

The familiar-size cue to depth under reduced-cue viewing conditions.

The familiar-size cue to perceived depth was investigated in five experiments. The stimuli were stationary familiar objects viewed monocularly under otherwise completely darkened visual conditions. Perceived depth was measured directly with the method of verbal report and indirectly with the head-motion procedure. Although the familiar-size cue influenced verbal reports of the distances of the objects, it did not determine perceived depth as assessed with the head-motion procedure. These findings support the claim that familiar size is not a major determinant of perceived depth, and that cogni

[Control of gaze and locomotion by spatial orientation].

We reported a new theory for daily vestibular functions which advocates top-down regulation of posture and gaze by supposing the coordinates in the brain. The hypothesis consists of three principles; first, the vestibular system is primarily a sensory system to detect spatial orientation; second, multisensory integrations reconstruct three-dimensional coordinates in the brain, which ascertain spatial orientation; third, daily behaviours like gazing or walking are controlled in a feed-forward manner by programming on the coordinates in the brain. The hypothesis was useful to understand strategi

Relationship between fixation disparity curves and symptoms in monofixators.

Patients with small angle strabismus usually are asymptomatic. Occasionally, however, binocular asthenopic symptoms are reported. Two monofixators, one symptomatic and the other asymptomatic, with similar profiles on strabismic evaluation had forced vergence Fixation Disparity Curves (FDC) measured. Slope of the FDC may help to discriminate between the symptomatic and asymptomatic patient.
