Electrocatalytic water oxidation occurs at fluoride-doped tin oxide (FTO) electrodes that have been surface-modified by addition of Co(II). Molecular dynamics simulations show that calix[4]pyrrole (CP) and octafluorocalix[4]pyrrole (8F-CP) are extremely flexible molecules. UNLABELLED: PET tumor imaging of the abdomen and pelvis is prone to artifacts due to urinary tract activity. A new technique has been developed to reduce such artifacts and enhance study interpretation.
METHODS: Thirty minutes after the injection of 18F-FDG, 500 cc 0.45% NaCl were administered intravenously over 30 min and a Foley catheter was placed in the bladder. At the start of imaging (60 min post-injection), furosemide was given (0.3 mg/kg). Prior to imaging the pelvis, the urinary catheter was clamped and saline was introduced retrograde into the bladder until full.

UNLABELLED: Nearly one-third of solitary pulmonary nodules are radiographically indeterminate for the presence of malignancy.
METHODS: FDG-PET imaging was used to differentiate benign and malignant solitary pulmonary nodules in 61 patients with radiographically indeterminate nodules. After confirmation of the histological diagnosis, the probability for cancer was established for positive and negative PET scans and compared to the risk estimates calculated using other patient variables.

Fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) imaging was performed in seven consecutive patients with primary hyperparathyroidism to preoperatively locate parathyroid adenomas. Foci of FDG accumulation corresponding to abnormal parathyroid tissue were observed in two out of nine surgically excised parathyroid adenomas. It was concluded that FDG PET imaging demonstrated a too low sensitivity for systematic preoperative detection and localization of parathyroid glands causing primary hyperparathyroidism.

The effect of fluorine and manganese on the health of workers continually exposed to these elements was studied. The concentration of the chemicals did not significantly exceed maximum allowable concentrations only during three hours of work daily. Because the Carboniferous deposits at Joggins, Nova Scotia, contain the earliest fauna of terrestrial vertebrates, the extremely well-preserved teeth of these ancient animals are of special interest. The " mineral" composition of teeth from the Joggins microsaur Hylerpeton dawsoni is crystallochemically identical with francolite, a carbonate fluorapatite. The fluorine content of the fossilized dentin is 3.1 percent, which is much higher than any previoulsly recorded for fossil teeth.
