To investigate the potential of high-temperature pretreatment composting of food waste for the amendment of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb)-contaminated soil, food waste subjected to high-temperature pretreatment composting (HC), traditional composting (TC), and only high-temperature pretreatment were combined with inorganic passivators (lime/zeolite) for an indoor passivation cultivation experiment. The results indicated that HC combined with the inorganic passivators group (HLZ) exhibited the most effective passivation potential for Cd and Pb in soil, achieving passivation rates of 76.92% and 86.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been used in industrial and consumer applications for ages. The pervasive and persistent nature of PFAS in the environment is a universal concern due to public health risks. Experts acknowledge that exposure to high levels of certain PFAS have consequences, including reduced vaccine efficacy, elevated cholesterol, and increased risk of high blood pressure. While considerable research has been conducted to investigate the presence of PFAS in the environment, the pathways for human exposure through food and food packaging/contact materials (FCM) re

Due to recently introduced 'so-called' bio- and plant-based friendly food contact materials and articles (FCM/FCA), some neglected safety issues need to be raised. In this review, potential chemical contaminants from FCM/FCA made from or containing wood and bamboo are presented. Sources, migration, and analytical issues in determining contaminants including intentionally and non-intentionally added substances (IAS and NIAS, respectively) are reviewed. Most of the contaminants are components from melamine-formaldehyde-resin (MFR), paints and coatings, preservatives, and bleaching agents. Tablew

Molecular gut content analysis via diagnostic PCR or high-throughput sequencing (metabarcoding) of consumers allows unravelling of feeding interactions in a wide range of animals. This is of particular advantage for analyzing the diet of small invertebrates living in opaque habitats such as the soil. Due to their small body size, which complicates dissection, microarthropods are subjected to whole-body DNA extraction-step before their gut content is screened for DNA of their food. This poses the problem that body surface contaminants, such as fungal spores may be incorrectly identified as inge

Conditions associated to the consumption of gluten have emerged as a major health care concern and the treatment consists on a lifelong gluten-free diet. Providing safe food for these individuals includes adapting to safety procedures within the food chain and preventing gluten cross-contamination in gluten-free food. However, a gluten cross-contamination prevention protocol or check-list has not yet been validated. Therefore, the aim of this study was to perform the content validation and semantic evaluation of a check-list elaborated for the prevention of gluten cross-contamination in food s

For Canadian Arctic indigenous populations, marine mammal (MM) traditional foods (TFs) represent sources of both important nutrients and hazardous environmental contaminants. Food preparation is known to impact the nutrient and environmental contaminant content of processed items, yet the impacts of preparation on indigenous Arctic MM TFs remain poorly characterized. In order to determine how the various processes involved in preparing beluga blubber TFs affect their levels of nutrients and environmental contaminants, we collected blubber samples from 2 male beluga whales, aged 24 and 37 years

Norovirus (NoV) is a prevalent pathogen of foodborne diseases; however, its detection in foods other than shellfish is often time consuming and unsuccessful. In 2010, an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis occurred on a cruise ship in Brazil, and NoV was the etiologic agent suspected. The objectives of this study were to report that a handy in-house methodology was suitable for NoV detection in naturally contaminated food, and perform the molecular characterization of food strains. Food samples (blue cheese, Indian sauce, herbal butter, soup, and white sauce) were analyzed by ELISA, two methods

The housefly, Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae), is recognized as an important factor in the dissemination of various infectious diseases such as cholera, shigellosis, and salmonellosis. They can also serve as a cross-contamination vector for other foodborne pathogens. However, the potential for bacterial transfer by houseflies has been demonstrated in a qualitative rather than quantitative manner. In this study, the numbers of bacteria a housefly can carry on its body and transfer to a clean surface after exposure to a sugar-milk aqueous solution, steak, and potato salad contaminated wit

Sesame meal protein isolate (SPI) derived from sesame meal was utilized as an upcycled plant protein source to develop N-halamine structure-based antimicrobial coating system to prevent cross-contamination for fresh food produce. The coating matrix was formulated using SPI, tannic acid (TA), cellulose nanocrystal (CNC), and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). The N-halamine structure maintained a stable active chlorine content of approximately 5 µmol/cm2 and enabled repeated recharging to the initial level on the coated model food-contact surface, stainless steel (SS). The stability of the coated sur

This study explores the potential of liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) for the retrospective analysis of samples from French Total Diet Studies. Composite babyfoods, sugary products and seafood samples were analysed by LC-HRMS using complementary targeted and suspect-screening approaches. Historical TDS analyses, carried-out using various compound-specific analytical methods, including LC/GC-MS/MS, had previously reported 28 chemicals in these samples. While direct comparisons with historical LC/GC-MSMS data are precluded by strong methodological disc

Aquatic food animals provide essential proteins, omega-3 fatty acids, and micronutrients to billions of people worldwide, yet their safety is increasingly challenged by the co-occurrence of microplastics (MPs), heavy metals (HMs), and pesticides in aquatic ecosystems. Unlike previous reviews that examine these contaminant classes separately, this review presents an integrated framework linking contamination sources, bioaccumulation, trophic transfer, human health risks, food security, and regulatory responses. MPs can act as physicochemical vectors by adsorbing HMs and pesticides and releasing

BACKGROUND: Suya, a widely consumed street-vended meat in Nigeria, may expose consumers to trace metal contamination due to informal preparation and vending conditions. Given its frequent patronage, contamination risk is shaped not only by exposure but also by how often people consume Suya, the factors influencing vendor choice, and their understanding of contamination and protective behaviors. In this study, "knowledge" refers to consumers' understanding of trace metal sources and health effects, while "awareness/safety practices" reflect risk perception and behavioral responses to minimize e

Tuna species, as highly migratory apex predators of major commercial significance, play a vital role as biological indicators of microplastics (MPs) contamination due to their trophic position and wide geographic distribution. Current systematic review aims to analyze the occurrence, characteristics, and concentrations of MPs in various tuna species. Data from 19 studies were compiled, focusing on the presence of MPs in different organs (gills, muscles, gastrointestinal tracts). High concentrations of MPs were found in tuna species from the Bay of Bengal (42.13 ± 13.58 MPs/individual in Thunnu
