Indwelling self-retaining ureteral stents are important for the maintenance of urinary drainage in the ureter threatened by obstruction by neoplasm, edema, or calculus. Proximal migration of the stent into the ureter prevents simple cystoscopic retrieval and necessitates removal by other techniques. In this series both rigid and flexible ureteroscopes were used to remove stents from locations ranging from the renal pelvis to the distal ureter in 16 patients. Three-pronged wire graspers was the retrieval instrument most frequently used. Stents were removed in all patients without complication.

The authors studied the penetration of iron administered extrabulbarly into the ocular tissues of rabbits. It was found that iron passes from the orbit into the eyeball and accumulates in considerable quantities in the sclera, choroid, retina, ciliary body, and even in the vitreous and corneal epithelium. However, light microscopy failed to show any damage to the ocular tissues. The mechanism by which iron penetrates into the eyeball is discussed, and comparison is made between changes in the tissues, which characterise siderosis produced by an intrabulbar iron foreign body, and those in which

The increasing use of intravenous polyethylene catheters has led to a growing incidence of accidental breakage of catheters and migration to the heart. In this communication, we describe a patient in whom the broken fragment of catheter migrated retrogradely from the subclavian vein to the inferior vena cava and left iliac vein. The possible mechanism for such retrograde migration is postulated.

An asymptomatic migration of a foreign body from the axilla to the neck was diagnosed mistakenly as an infected thyroglossal duct sinus. Cure was effected by removal.

AIMS: Many cardiovascular events occur in seemingly healthy individuals. We set out to assess the predictive value of atherosclerosis imaging in combination with cardiovascular risk calculators in subjects aged 40-65 years.
METHODS: We compared PROCAM (PROspective CArdiovascular Münster study), SCORE (Systematic COronary Risk Evaluation) and SCORE2 with carotid ultrasound (total plaque area, TPA) in subjects without cardiovascular disease. In this prospective cohort study, follow-up was obtained by phone or mail from patients; or from clinical records, if needed.
RESULTS: In 2842 subjects (me

A 12-year-old, male Yorkshire terrier was presented for acute pulmonary oedema. Thoracic radiographs showed a linear metallic foreign body within the cardiac silhouette. Echocardiogram showed a hyperechoic line extending through the left ventricle, the mitral valve, leading into the left atrium. A 4 cm long Kirschner wire was surgically removed by left fourth thoracotomy. The dog died two days after surgery for acute pulmonary oedema. Necropsy showed thrombi on the mitral leaflets that impeded their movement.

Because many patients who have swallowed foreign bodies are asymptomatic, physicians must maintain a high index of suspicion. The majority of ingested foreign bodies pass spontaneously, but serious complications, such as bowel perforation and obstruction, can occur. Foreign bodies lodged in the esophagus should be removed endoscopically, but some small, blunt objects may be pulled out using a Foley catheter or pushed into the stomach using bougienage [corrected] Once they are past the esophagus, large or sharp foreign bodies should be removed if reachable by endoscope. Small, smooth objects an

INTRODUCTION: Over 75% of ingested foreign bodies pass the gastrointestinal tract without any complications. Blunt foreign bodies may lead to a disruption of the intestinal passage, mainly in the area of the ileocoecal opening. The size of the reported foreign bodies varies considerably. The aim of this study was the anatomic investigation to clarify the possible causes of obstruction and its influence on the diameter of the ileocoecal opening.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: We investigate anatomically and describe the ileocoecal opening on the basis of 27 specimens.
RESULTS: We found not a flap mecha

A 70-year old female patient presented with intractable lower abdominal pain and recurrent urinary tract infection following an endoscopic bladder neck suspension. Investigations revealed it to be a case of suture and pledget migration leading to foreign body granuloma in urinary bladder. It is being reported as an uncommon complication of endoscopic bladder neck suspension. An early endoscopic evaluation should be carried out in cases of unexplained lower urinary tract symptoms following any surgical procedure for incontinence. It is also appropriate to retrieve these foreign bodies endourolo
