Unintended Consequences: A Case Study of a Toddler's Accidental Burn Injury Caused by a Hair Crimper.

Recognizing when an injury is concerning for abuse is of utmost importance, as failure to do so places the child at a significant risk for further inflicted injury. Misinterpreting accidental injury as abuse can also have dire consequences for a child and their caregivers. The provider must be aware of characteristics of cutaneous injuries, including burns, that are concerning for abuse. Understanding these characteristics and putting them into clinical practice is necessary to protect children from additional abuse and protect families from wrongful accusations. This case report evaluates a 1

An Experiential Approach to Canine-Assisted Learning in Corrections for Prisoners Who Use Substances.

Canine-assisted interventions are a promising approach to help address substance use and mental health issues in prisons. However, canine-assisted interventions in prisons have not been well explored in relation to experiential learning (EL) theory, despite canine-assisted interventions and EL aligning in many ways. In this article, we discuss a canine-assisted learning and wellness program guided by EL for prisoners with substance use issues in Western Canada. Letters written by participants to the dogs at the conclusion of the program suggest that such programming can help shift relational d

Leveraging Telehealth to Address Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Access Disparities in Rural Communities.

BACKGROUND: There are persistent gaps in access to sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs) in rural and underserved areas, yielding health and legal disparities for survivors. These inequities prompted federal investment in novel telehealth programs to improve SANE access. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine program case studies from two sexual abuse/assault (SA) telehealth centers, illuminating successes, challenges, and lessons learned. METHODS: Two state SA telehealth program directors used a collective instrumental case study approach to understand telehealth SANE (teleSANE) pro

REVIEW METHODS: Guided by Whittemore and Knafl's methodology, an integrative review was conducted using online databases of Scopus, CINAHL, NIOSH-tic, and PubMed in July

Nonfatal Strangulation: More Than Meets the Eye.

Nonfatal strangulation is a relatively newly recognized mechanism of injury that may not be taken seriously because of lack of physical injuries that many times accompany it. This comparison case series supports the importance of considering not only visually detected injuries but also symptoms the patient may be experiencing when determining diagnostics necessary to guide a treatment plan. A visually detectable injury is dependent on multiple factors. Bruises may occur with minimal pressure but may not be visible immediately after assault. Contrary to this, extensive bruising of the neck is n

Caring as Coercion: Exploring the Nurse's Role in Mandated Treatment.

When nurses work in environments that have overlapping medical, legal, institutional, social, and therapeutic priorities, nursing care can become an effective tool in advancing the competing goals of these multiple systems. During the provision of patient care, nurses manage the tensions inherent in the competing priorities of these different systems, and skillful nursing can have the effect of rendering these tensions invisible. This puts nurses in an ethically complex position, where on one hand, their humanizing empathy has the potential to improve the delivery and effect of mandated care y

What Does the Implementation of Peer Care Training in a U.K. Prison Reveal About Prisoner Engagement in Peer Caregiving?

The number of aging and chronically ill prisoners continues to rise within the United Kingdom prison demography; consequentially, many institutions face health and social care crises of immense proportions. The needs of this group are both complex and costly, and in the United Kingdom, this is set to a backdrop of overcrowding, increasing violence, and public spending cuts in line with government austerity targets. In this context, the development of prisoner peer caregiving is proposed as an approach to mitigating the effects of aging, disability, and illness. A qualitative study was implemen

Combatting the Opioid Crisis From Prison: Initiating Opioid Agonist Therapy.

Presented is a case report of a young man dependent on fentanyl who did not receive opioid agonist therapy (OAT) during incarceration. Highlighted are the barriers to accessing OAT in custody, which exacerbates problems with drug-seeking behavior, diversion, and recidivism. Discussed are the implications for correctional healthcare, including the benefits of utilizing telehealth services to maximize accessibility to OAT in correctional institutions that will not only enhance the quality of patient care but also address the growing opioid epidemic across Canada.

Anogenital and Physical Injuries in Adolescent Sexual Assault Patients: The Role of Victim-Offender Relationship, Alcohol Use, and Memory Impairment.

Prior research has documented high rates of anogenital and physical injuries among adolescent sexual assault patients. Although a number of factors related to rates of injury detection in adolescents have been identified, there may be additional features of the assault that are disclosed in the patient history that could be important indicators of injury risk. The purpose of the current study was to expand this literature by examining whether factors that are salient in sexual assaults committed against adolescents-victim-offender relationship, substance use, and memory impairment-are associat

Self-Care Management in Corrections: Perspectives From Persons With an Incarceration Experience.

The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions and beliefs of what self-care management looks like for a person with an incarceration experience. This is the first phase of a two-phase study. This qualitative study, held in three county jails in Massachusetts, utilized a focus group methodology. The Rediscovery of Self-Care: A Care Intervention for Persons with Incarceration Experience (RSC) model served as the framework for this study. On the basis of a priori constructs from the RSC model, a protocol was established and targeted questions outlined. The results from these focus grou

Screening Children for Abuse and Neglect: A Review of the Literature.

Child abuse and neglect occur in epidemic numbers in the United States and around the world, resulting in major physical and mental health consequences for abused children in the present and future. A vast amount of information is available on the signs and symptoms and short- and long-term consequences of abuse. A limited number of instruments have been empirically developed to screen for child abuse, with most focused on physical abuse in the context of the emergency department, which have been found to be minimally effective and lacking rigor. This literature review focuses on physical, sex
