Experimental and field studies on the viability of eggs, and the infectivity of third-stage larvae of the human hookworm Necator americanus recovered from the creek waters of the Niger Delta, Nigeria, and their epidemiological significance.

In a combined field and laboratory study, the eggs and 3rd-stage infective larvae of the human hookworm Necator americanus were recovered from the creek waters of the Niger Delta, Nigeria. They were tested for viability and infectivity. Eggs recovered from fresh water creeks showed a viability or hatching index of between 17.5 and 23.7%. Eggs recovered from brackish water showed a viability index of 18.8-21.4% in 'normal' cultures, and a maximum index of 6.3% when cultured in brackish water. The differences in the viability indices of these eggs were not significant (P greater than 0.05). Infe

Freshwater Water-Quality Criteria for Chloride and Guidance for the Revision of the Water-Quality Standard in China.

The chloride in water frequently exceeds the standard; directly quoting foreign water-quality criteria (WQC) or standards will inevitably reduce the scientific value of the water-quality standard (WQS) in China. Additionally, this may lead to the under- or overprotection of water bodies. This study summarized the sources, distribution, pollution status, and hazards of chloride in China's water bodies. Additionally, we compared and analyzed the basis for setting WQS limits for chloride in China; we systematically analyzed the basis for setting the WQC for chloride in foreign countries, especial

Macroinvertebrate diversity as the bioindicators of freshwater ecosystem health: deterioration in physicochemical water quality parameters.

Freshwater ecosystems are robust, biodiverse, and important to sustain ecological balance and human well-being. They provide essential services such as water purification, nutrient cycling, fisheries, irrigation, and climate regulation. However, industrialization, agricultural intensification, and urban expansion have put huge pressure on these ecosystems, resulting in substantial decline in water quality and ecosystem integrity. Among various methods used to evaluate ecological condition, aquatic macroinvertebrates have emerged as prominent and reliable bioindicators of environmental change.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of Ramsar wetlands and freshwater resources: Technological innovations for ecosystem conservation.

Aquatic ecosystems, particularly wetlands, are vulnerable to natural and anthropogenic influences. This study examines the Saman Bird Sanctuary and Keetham Lake, both Ramsar sites, using advanced remote sensing for water occurrence, land use and land cover (LULC), and water quality assessments. Sentinel data, processed in cloud computing, enabled land-use classification, water boundary delineation, and seasonal water occurrence mapping. A combination of Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI), OTSU threshold segmentation, and Canny edge detection provided precise seasonal water boun

Persistence of PFOA Pollution at a PTFE Production Site and Occurrence of Replacement PFASs in English Freshwaters Revealed by Sentinel Species, the Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra).

Concentrations of 33 PFASs were determined in 20 Eurasian otters, sampled 2015-2019, along a transect away from a factory, which used PFOA in PTFE manufacture. Despite cessation of usage in 2012, PFOA concentrations remained high near the factory (>298 μg/kg ww <20 km from factory) and declined with increasing distance (<57 μg/kg ww >150 km away). Long-chain legacy PFASs dominated the Σ33PFAS profile, particularly PFOS, PFOA, PFDA, and PFNA. Replacement compounds, PFECHS, F-53B, PFBSA, PFBS, PFHpA, and 8:2 FTS, were detected in ≥19 otters, this being the first report of PFBSA and PFECHS in the

Investigating the toxicity of polylactic acid microplastics on the health and physiology of freshwater fish, Cirrhinus mrigala.

The widespread presence of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic ecosystems has raised growing concerns among ecotoxicologists regarding their potential toxicity. This study explored the impacts of polylactic acid (PLA) MPs on the physiology and health of freshwater fish, Cirrhinus mrigala, by dietary exposure for 90 days. The experiment consisted of six groups: five treatment groups (0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2%, and 2.5% PLA-MP) and a control group (0% PLA-MP). Each group was comprised of fifteen fish, and the experiment was replicated three times. The exposure severity of PLA-MPs varied from low to high, wi

Assessing Cu impacts on freshwater diatoms: biochemical and metabolomic responses of Tabellaria flocculosa (Roth) Kützing.

Metals are a recognised threat to aquatic organisms but the impact of metals such as copper (Cu) on benthic freshwater diatoms is poorly understood, even if diatoms are commonly used as water quality indicators. Our study aimed to elucidate the cellular targets of Cu toxicity and the mechanisms cells resort to counteract toxicity and to increase tolerance to Cu. A concerted approach analysing the biochemical, physiological and metabolome alterations in diatom cells was conducted by exposing the freshwater diatom Tabellaria flocculosa to 0, 0.3, 6 and 10μgCu/L. Cu was already toxic to T. floccu

Water hardness determines 226Ra uptake in the tropical freshwater mussel.

Chemical data for freshwater mussels (Velesunio spp.) and water from 15 sampling sites in the Alligator Rivers Region and Rum Jungle uranium provinces in tropical Northern Australia were analysed to develop a predictive model of radium-226 (226Ra) bioaccumulation for variable water calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) concentrations. Application of the model as a 226Ra screening approach for freshwater mussels in tropical waterbodies potentially impacted by operational or remediated uranium mine sites is discussed in relation to Mudginberri Billabong, located approximately 12 km downstream of Range

Analytical insight into degradation processes of aminopolyphosphonates as potential factors that induce cyanobacterial blooms.

Aminopolyphosphonates (AAPs) are commonly used industrial complexones of metal ions, which upon the action of biotic and abiotic factors undergo a breakdown and release their substructures. Despite the low toxicity of AAPs towards vertebrates, products of their transformations, especially those that contain phosphorus and nitrogen, can affect algal communities. To verify whether such chemical entities are present in water ecosystems, much effort has been made in developing fast, inexpensive, and reliable methods for analyzing phosphonates. However, unfortunately, the methods described thus far

Transformation products in the life cycle impact assessment of chemicals.

The current life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) of chemicals focuses only on the fate and effects of the parent compound, neglecting the potential impact of transformation products. Here, we assess the importance of including the potential impact of transformation products in the calculation of characterization factors (CF). The developed method is applied to freshwater ecotoxicity for 15 pesticides and perchloroethylene, which are all known to have potentially persistent transformation products. The inclusion of transformation products resulted in a median increase in CF that varied from negl

Mercury cycling in stream ecosystems. 3. Trophic dynamics and methylmercury bioaccumulation.

Trophic dynamics (community composition and feeding relationships) have been identified as important drivers of methylmercury (MeHg) bioaccumulation in lakes, reservoirs, and marine ecosystems. The relative importance of trophic dynamics and geochemical controls on MeHg bioaccumulation in streams, however, remains poorly characterized. MeHg bioaccumulation was evaluated in eight stream ecosystems across the United States (Oregon, Wisconsin, and Florida) spanning large ranges in climate, landscape characteristics, atmospheric Hg deposition, and stream chemistry. Across all geographic regions an

Environmental inactivation of Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts in waste stabilization ponds.

The survival of Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts in a waste stabilization pond system in northwestern Spain and the effects of sunlight and the depth and type of pond on oocyst viability were evaluated using an assay based on the exclusion or inclusion of two fluorogenic vital dyes, 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) and propidium iodide (PI). All tested factors had significant effects (P < 0.01) over time on C. parvum oocyst viability. Sunlight exposure was the most influential factor for oocyst inactivation. A 40% reduction was observed after 4 days exposure to sunlight conditions compared w

Drain blocking: an effective treatment for reducing dissolved organic carbon loss and water discolouration in a drained peatland.

Peatlands are an important terrestrial carbon store. However, heightened levels of degradation in response to environmental change have resulted in an increased loss of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and an associated rise in the level of discolouration in catchment waters. A significant threat to peatland sustainability has been the installation of artificial drainage ditches. However, recent restoration schemes have pursued drain blocking as a possible strategy for reducing degradation, fluvial carbon loss and water discolouration. This paper investigates the effect of open cut drainage and

Controlled release, blind tests of DNAPL characterization using partitioning tracers.

The partitioning tracer technique for dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) characterization was evaluated in an isolated test cell, in which controlled releases of perchloroethylene (PCE) had occurred. Four partitioning tracer tests were conducted, two using an inverted, double five-spot pumping pattern, and two using vertical circulation wells. Two of the four tests were conducted prior to remedial activities, and two were conducted after. Each test was conducted as a "blind test" where researchers conducting the partitioning tracer tests had no knowledge of the volume, method of release, no
