Lemierre's syndrome is a rare but a life threatening condition which affects young healthy individuals, was first described by Dr.Andre Lemierre in 1936. Incidence rates are between 0.6 and 2.3 per million population. It is found more commonly in males, with a male to female ratio of approximately 2:1. Its pathogenesis consists of the development of infectious thrombophlebitis in the internal jugular vein or one of its branches caused by a focal sepsis, mostly localized in the oropharynx, leading to generalized multiorgan metastatic infections, generally to the lung. We present a case of Lemierre syndrome characterized by thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein with multiple metastatic foci after acute otopharyngeal infection in a 30-year-old woman. Despite treatment with tonsillectomy leading to a diagnosis of peritonsillar abscess, her condition worsened and she was admitted with high fever. Chest radiograph and CT scan of the thorax revealed multiple pulmonary cavities and pleural effusion on the right side. On neck CT, a thrombus was detected in the left internal jugular vein. She received with intravenous clindamycin (CLDM) and cefepime (CFPM) a

The authors report a case of acute mastoiditis in a four year-old boy due to fusobacterium necrophorum. The importance of the complications (septiciemia, lateral sinus thrombosis, meningitis, osteitis) and the fusobacterium necrophorum are the two majors interests of this observation. A review of the literature is performed.

Fusobacterium nucleatum may be implicated in cases of emphysematous cholecystitis (EC) and carries a high mortality risk, especially in individuals with heart disease, renal insufficiency, and underlying malignancy. Fusobacterium infections are rarely detected in the setting of cholecystitis possibly due to the difficulty with properly culturing the bacteria. We describe a case of a patient with EC in whom blood cultures were positive for growth of F. nucleatum in one of two samples. The patient was treated with empiric antibiotic therapy consisting of metronidazole and cefepime. In patients w

The "classic" presentation of Lemierre syndrome is a post-anginal sepsis with internal jugular thrombophlebitis and metastatic infection caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum or other Fusobacterium species. Skull base and cervical osteomyelitis are rare complications of Lemierre syndrome and cranio-cervical junction instability is a rare complication of head and neck infections overall. Herein, we report a case of Lemierre syndrome that was complicated by skull base and cervical spinal osteomyelitis, leading to CN XII palsy, atlanto-axial instability, and basilar invagination. At the time of thi

This case report presents a unique case of pediatric Fusobacterium necrophorum osteomyelitis and septic arthritis, emphasizing the role of radiological imaging in diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring. Fusobacterium necrophorum, typically a member of the head and neck flora, is an uncommon causative agent of osteomyelitis, making this case particularly noteworthy. A 17-year-old male, with a history of recurrent otalgia, presented with worsening right otalgia, otorrhea for six days, headache, decreased range of motion of the neck to the right, and right hip pain. Radiological assessment

This study showed that impoverished Nigerian children at risk for cancrum oris (noma) had significantly reduced plasma concentrations of zinc (< 10.8 micromol/L), retinol (< 1.05 micromol/L), ascorbate (< 11 micromol/L), and the essential amino acids, with prominently increased plasma and saliva levels of free cortisol, compared with their healthy counterparts. The nutrient deficiencies, in concert with previously reported widespread viral infections (measles, herpesviruses) in the children, would impair oral mucosal immunity. We postulate, subject to additional studies, that evolution of the

<p>Background: Infections caused by anaerobic bacteria occur frequently and can be serious and life-threatening. Anaerobes are a rare cause of community-acquired pneumonia with Streptococcus pneumonia and respiratory viruses being the most frequently detected pathogens. We, herein, report a case of Fusobacterium/Peptostreptococcus parapneumonic effusion with empyema in a patient without risk factors for aspiration pneumonia. This case presents an opportunity to discuss an unusual case of community-acquired empyema secondary to anaerobic infection in a patient without the common risk factors fo

This case series reviews individuals with Fusobacterium necrophorum bacteremia at a New York City hospital from 1 December 2014 through 1 December 2024. Sex-based differences in clinical manifestations were observed; female patients presented with genital tract infections. Consequently, F necrophorum bacteremia in female patients should prompt evaluation of the genital tract.

Gas-liquid chromatographic analysis of volatile fatty acid patterns was performed when growth was initially detected in 87 positive blood cultures. Isovaleric acid, butyric acid, or both were found in 39 of 43 (90%) blood cultures that contained anaerobes but were absent in all 44 cultures that contained facultatively anaerobic or aerobic bacteria. The detection of isovaleric acid indicated the presence of Bacteroides fragilis, as this acid was found in 88% of unimicrobial and 75% of polymicrobial bacteremias due to B. fragilis. Butyric acid was detected most often in blood cultures which grew

BACKGROUND: Brain abscesses are uncommon intracranial infections with an estimated incidence of 0.5 per 100000 individuals. Among bacterial causes, Fusobacterium species account for less than 10% of cases, and fewer than 20 pediatric instances have been reported worldwide. These infections are predominantly seen in individuals with poor dental hygiene, sinusitis and pose diagnostic challenges due to their anaerobic nature and frequent culture negativity. However, cases in immunocompetent individuals are rare and often pose diagnostic challenges due to the anaerobic nature of the causative orga

Lemierre syndrome has classically been described as septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular veins resulting from primary oropharyngeal disease caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum. However, many cases have been reported of the syndrome originating from other primary sites of infection, resulting in limited utility of the diagnostic criteria and increased difficulty in making the diagnosis. We describe a 22-year-old female who developed the syndrome through a Fusobacterium infection which originated from a Bartholin gland abscess, a phenomenon that has not yet been described in the liter

STUDY DESIGN: Case report.
OBJECTIVE: We present a case of vertebral osteomyelitis and discitis caused by Fusobacterium nucleatum in a 42-year-old female.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Infection of the vertebral bodies or disc space with this organism is rare. A review of the English literature disclosed 13 cases of vertebral osteomyelitis caused by Fusobacterium spp. Because of the negative impact of this condition on the affected patients' activities of daily living, it is important to understand the clinical character and effective management of the disease to improve quality of life. Fusobacterium nucleatum is a Gram-negative anaerobe that occupies a central ecological niche in oral biofilms but has emerged as a trans-compartmental pathogen implicated in gastrointestinal and cardiovascular diseases. In inflammatory bowel diseases, Fusobacterium nucleatum adheres to the intestinal epithelium via adhesins such as FadA, disrupts tight junctions, and induces Toll-like receptor-mediated inflammatory cascades, amplifying epithelial permeability and sustaining mucosal inflammation. In colorectal cancer, Fusobacterium nucleatum promotes carcinogenesis through multiple mechanisms,

Colorectal cancer, which originates in the epithelial cells of the colon or rectum, is closely associated with dysbiosis of the gut microbiota. Increasing evidence has shown that Fusobacterium nucleatum plays a significant role in colorectal cancer progression by activating inflammatory responses, modulating the tumor microenvironment, and promoting tumor cell proliferation. Antimicrobial peptides targeting Fusobacterium nucleatum have the potential to serve as more effective and less toxic therapeutic agents compared to chemotherapy drugs. In this study, we systematically evaluated the antiba

We report a genital tract Fusobacterium necrophorum and Streptococcus anginosus postpartum infection causing Lemierre's syndrome in a 17-year-old female. This resulted in sepsis, endomyometritis, oophoritis, thrombosis of the right ovarian vein, thrombocytopenia and hysterectomy. Prompt recognition leading to aggressive medical/surgical management of postpartum infection is vital to preserve fertility.

The aim of this study was to assess the incidence and susceptibility to antibacterial agents of anaerobic strains in 118 patients with head and neck abscesses (31) and cellulitis (87). Odontogenic infection was the most common identified source, occurring in 73 (77.7%) of 94 patients. The incidence of anaerobes in abscesses and cellulitis was 71 and 75.9%, respectively, and that in patients before (31 patients) and after (87) the start of empirical treatment was 80.6 and 72.4%, respectively. The detection rates of anaerobes in patients with odontogenic and other sources of infection were 82.2
