Peripheral cemento-ossifying fibroma (PCOF) is a relatively rare tumor classified between fibro-osseous lesions. PCOF is an osteogenic neoplasm that ordinarily presents as an epulis-like growth with uncertain pathogenesis. It predominantly affects young adults, with peak prevalence between the first and second decades of life. We present here the case report of a 15-year-old girl, which was previously surgically excised twice and had recurred both the times. The disease duration was 2 years and a follow-up of 1-year was done. Clinical, radiographic, and histological characteristics are discuss

A case of an epulis in an 8-month-old boy is reported. The tumor was localized on the mandibular alveolar ridge and, according to the parents, was a recurrence of a congenital tumor excised when the boy was 2 months old. Microscopically, it was composed of many spindled or ovoid cells with vesicular nuclei and non-granular eosinophilic cytoplasm, and covered by acanthotic parakeratinized squamous epithelium with broad rete pegs. Immunohistochemically, the spindled and ovoid cells were intensely positive for vimentin and neuron-specific enolase, and negative for S-100 protein. The final diagnos

We present a rare case of oral metastatic epithelioid sarcoma rapidly growing over the mandibular gingivae; the primary lesion occurred on the wrist and was treated 18 months earlier by surgery and radiotherapy. The oral metastatic lesion was resected and controlled by chemotherapy. This case has been followed for 2 years with good control of the resected oral metastatic lesion. Histologically, round to oval-shaped tumour cells with abundant eosinophylic globular cytoplasm and eccentrically localized nuclei, lack of epithelial features by electron microscopic study, and the immunohistochemical

Epithelioid leiomyosarcoma (EL) is a rare malignant tumor of mesenchymal origin. The Authors review the literature and report a case of gingival epithelioid leiomyosarcoma in a 40-year-old patient. In this case the leiomyosarcoma was located in the lower front dental group and invaded the symphysis menti. A segmentary mandibolectomy was performed with reconstruction using a non-revascularized autologous iliac bone graft. The differential diagnosis of primary EL is quite complex and it is grouped with other sarcomas, sarcomatoid carcinoma, myoepithelioma, amelanotic melanoma and metastases from

A case of metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma involving the mandibular periodontium of a 36-year-old female is presented. The diffuse gingival enlargement from premolar to premolar was quite unusual, and other conditions were considered in the clinical differential diagnosis. Histopathologic evaluation of the gingival lesion showed a poorly differentiated carcinoma which appeared morphologically similar to earlier metastatic lesions of the nasal fossa and brain.

RATIONALE: The free fibular flap is considered the gold standard, particularly for a mandibular defect combined with a significant soft tissue defect. However, the fibular flap has the disadvantages of a lack of height for postoperative dental restoration and donor site skin graft if the skin paddle is wider than 5 cm. The larger bone and soft tissue defects tend to be reconstructed using either a scapula or a combination of iliac artery and radial free flap. Few cases involving reconstruction using chimeric deep circumflex iliac artery perforator flap (DCIAPF) for mandibular defect combined w

Pyogenic granuloma is one of the inflammatory hyperplasias seen in the oral cavity. This term is a misnomer because the lesion is unrelated to infection and in reality arises in response to various stimuli such as low-grade local irritation, traumatic injury or hormonal factors. It predominantly occurs in the second decade of life in young females, possibly because of the vascular effects of female hormones. Clinically, oral pyogenic granuloma is a smooth or lobulated exophytic lesion manifesting as small, red erythematous papules on a pedunculated or sometimes sessile base, which is usually h

This syndrome, also known as encephalotrigeminal angiomatosis, is a condition with multiple clinical findings, including vascular anomalies and intraoral involvement. The patient was a nine-year-old black boy with Sturge-Weber syndrome. He had a lesion removed and diagnosed as pyogenic granuloma. There were no complications and the tissue healed normally.

INTRODUCTION: The development of various benign oral mucosal lesions associated with dental implants, such as pyogenic granuloma or peripheral giant cell granuloma, has been rarely reported. However, the occurrence of vascular diseases, such as hemangioma, related to dental implants has not been explored in the literature. In this study, we report a case of co-development of pyogenic granuloma and capillary hemangioma on the alveolar ridge associated with a dental implant in a patient undergoing antithrombotic therapy. To the best of our knowledge, this is first case of hemangioma formation as

The purpose of this study was to present the clinical features of reactive hyperplasia among Iranian people. A series of 172 consecutive confirmed cases were studied using the database available at the Department of Oral Medicine, Kerman School of Dentistry. Reactive hyperplasia was classified into five groups: traumatic fibroma, peripheral fibroma with calcification, pyogenic granuloma, peripheral giant cell granuloma, and hyperplasia caused by dentures. Age, sex, site, clinical and radiographic findings, and outcome of treatment were recorded. Ages ranged from 5 to 79 years (mean 36). More w

Gingival metastases from non-oral malignancies are very uncommon. The case is presented of a man with rectal adenocarcinoma, whose first clinical evidence of metastatic disease was a gingival metastasis. Although the prognosis of patients with gingival metastases is felt to be poor, prompt initiation of appropriate therapy may afford significant palliation. A 20-year literature review of uncommon metastatic sites for rectal adenocarcinoma and non-oral malignancies which can metastasize to gingiva is briefly presented. Gingival metastasis should be included in the differential diagnosis of a gi

Since the discovery of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs), many researchers have focused their attention on new sources of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Consequently, MSCs that display self-renewal capacity, multidifferentiation potential and immunomodulatory properties have been isolated from human oral tissues, including tooth, periodontal ligament, and gingiva. Oral MSCs involve dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs), stem cells from exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED), periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs), dental follicle stem cells (DFCs), stem cells from apical papilla (SCAP) and gin

The gingivobuccal space is a subsite of the oral cavity with strict anatomic boundaries. Although squamous cell carcinoma related to tobacco use is the most common malignant tumor occurring in this area, minor salivary gland tumors and sarcomas can also occur. Malignant lesions of this space have a less favorable prognosis than other subsites of the oral cavity. Tumors arising within the gingivobuccal space have unique patterns of invasion of adjacent anatomy, submucosal spread, invasion of the infratemporal fossa and skull base, perineural spread, and nodal metastasis. Appropriate treatment r

Angiosarcoma is a rare and highly malignant mesenchymal tumor. Similar to other soft tissue sarcomas, it may arise in any organ, although it occurs more frequently within skin structures like the scalp. Angiosarcoma has a characteristic pattern of local and distant relapse involving primary site, regional lymph nodes, and lung. Patients affected by unresectable relapses or metastases have a dismal prognosis with a median overall survival of less than 9 months. We present the case of a 74-year-old woman who previously underwent total mastectomy for a radiotherapy-induced angiosarcoma of the bre

BACKGROUND: Gingival melanoacanthoma is an uncommon reactive lesion, typically appearing as a solitary pigmented macule. This article reports a previously undescribed case of multifocal melanoacanthoma affecting the maxillary and mandibular gingiva and the hard palate. A literature review of melanoacanthoma of the gingiva is also provided.
METHODS: An otherwise healthy 60-year-old white female sought care for a periodic dental prophylaxis. The intraoral examination was remarkable for numerous painless, brown macular lesions in all four gingival quadrants and on the hard palate (eight on the g
