Public health consequences of global climate change. A narrative review.

Human activities related to the industrialization generated an overall rise of global temperatures with approximately 1 °C since 1880. These … which is a significant rise in Earth's surface temperature. Here, we examine the interplay between global warming and climate change, emphasizing their interconnected yet distinct roles. The consequences include extreme weather events, permafrost melting, and biodiversity loss. Most importantly, climate change represents a direct threat for human health. Higher …

Cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment of sisal/PLA biocomposite: Uncovering the dominance of transport and burden-shifting trade-offs in sustainable material design.

Natural fibre-reinforced biocomposites are increasingly recognised as promising alternatives for reducing the high carbon footprint of the c … ntional window frame materials. Under baseline pilot-scale conditions, the biocomposite exhibited a global warming potential of 17.52 kg of carbon dioxide equivalent, with intercontinental air freight accounting for 62.53% of total emissions. Scenario optimisation involving ocean freight, 100% wind energy, and a 60:40 polylactic acid-to-sisal ratio reduced the g …

Proteomics analysis reveals the antagonistic interaction between high CO2 and warming in the adaptation of the marine diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii in future oceans.

While it is known that warming and rising CO2 level might interactively affect the long-term adaptation of marine diatoms, the molecular and physiological mechanisms underlying these interactions in the marine diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii on an evolutionary scale remain largely unexplored. In this study, we investigated the changes in metabolic pathways and physiological responses of T. weissflogii under long-term ocean acidification and/or warming conditions (∼3.5 years), integrating proteomics analyses and physiological measurements. Our findings reveal that proteins involved in central

A process-based life cycle assessment of the climate impact of a Swedish intensive care unit.

About 4.4% of the global emissions of greenhouse gases can be ascribed to healthcare. Intensive care is among the most resource intensive sp … wedish low-climate-impact energy mix were used in the primary analysis. Results are reported as the global warming potential of carbon dioxide equivalents for 100 years (CO2eq). The median climate impact of one inpatient day was 30 kg CO2eq (95%-reference interval: [27-31]). Approximately 63% (19 kg CO2eq [18-20] could be attributed to single-use items, 19% (5.5 …

Protecting clinician autonomy and patient safety within the climate debate: the case for desflurane in modern anaesthesia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The anaesthesia community should play a more active role in shaping sustainable healthcare practices. Current environmental measures, such as the European Commission's impending restriction on desflurane (an inhaled anaesthetic) from January 2026, risk unintended consequences for patient care and clinical autonomy. RECENT FINDINGS: While desflurane's high global warming potential (GWP) has been the central justification, GWP is an oversimplified metric that fails to reflect the transient atmospheric behaviour of short-lived gases like desflurane compared with long-lived gas…

Bringing Climate Change to Strasbourg. The Convention and Healthy Environment Claims.

Climate change profoundly impacts all aspects of human life, including health. International fora and nation States recognise the importance of urgently cutting greenhouse gas emissions as a primary cause of global warming. States' commitment to alter climate change has resulted in several treaty documents referring explicitly to human rights obligations. But what exactly are States' obligations under climate change treaty law and other human rights treaties? And what is the judiciary's role when confronted with the right to health violations and systemic deficiencies relating to climate chang…

Microbial mechanisms of mesofauna pattern changes affecting soil greenhouse gas emissions and ecosystem multifunctionality.

In mountainous regions, global warming has changed the biological diversity and community structure of both aboveground and belowground organisms, and it may cause biota to move from lower altitudes to higher altitudes. However, our understanding of such migrations of soil mesofauna caused by global warming on soil processes and functions remains limited. We carried out a 79-day experiment comprising treatments without mesofauna (WM), native mesofauna (NM), migratory mesofauna (MM), and both native and migratory mesofauna together (TM) to reveal the effects of soil mesofauna migration on green…

Apparent thermal acclimation of soil heterotrophic respiration mainly mediated by substrate availability.

Multiple lines of existing evidence suggest that increasing CO2 emission from soils in response to rising temperature could accelerate global warming. However, in experimental studies, the initial positive response of soil heterotrophic respiration (RH ) to warming often weakens over time (referred to apparent thermal acclimation). If the decreased RH is driven by thermal adaptation of soil microbial community, the potential for soil carbon (C) losses would be reduced substantially. In the meanwhile, the response could equally be caused by substrate depletion, and would then reflect the gradua…

Global climate change and infectious diseases.

The effects of global climate change on infectious diseases are hypothetical until more is known about the degree of change in temperature and humidity that will occur. Diseases most likely to increase in their distribution and severity have three-factor (agent, vector, and human being) and four-factor (plus vertebrate reservoir host) ecology. Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes may move northward and have more rapid metamorphosis with global warming. These mosquitoes transmit dengue virus, and Aedes aegypti transmits yellow fever virus. The faster metamorphosis and a shorter extrins…

Response of cyanobacteria and phytoplankton abundance to warming, extreme rainfall events and nutrient enrichment.

Cyanobacterial blooms are an increasing threat to water quality and global water security caused by the nutrient enrichment of freshwaters. There is also a broad consensus that blooms are increasing with global warming, but the impacts of other concomitant environmental changes, such as an increase in extreme rainfall events, may affect this response. One of the potential effects of high rainfall events on phytoplankton communities is greater loss of biomass through hydraulic flushing. Here we used a shallow lake mesocosm experiment to test the combined effects of: warming (ambient vs. +4°C in…

Geological Net Zero and the need for disaggregated accounting for carbon sinks.

Achieving net-zero global emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), with declining emissions of other greenhouse gases, is widely expected to halt global warming. CO2 emissions will continue to drive warming until fully balanced by active anthropogenic CO2 removals. For practical reasons, however, many greenhouse gas accounting systems allow some 'passive' CO2 uptake, such as enhanced vegetation growth owing to CO2 fertilization, to be included as removals in the definition of net anthropogenic emissions. By including passive CO2 uptake, nominal net-zero emissions would not halt global warming, under…

Global vegetation production may decrease in this century due to rising atmospheric dryness.

Previous projections from Earth system models have suggested that rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations would stimulate global vegetation production through the CO2 fertilization effect. Here we show that increased atmospheric dryness driven by climate warming will substantially counteract this effect. Using measurements from global eddy-covariance sites and a process-based model, we project that global vegetation gross primary production (GPP) will peak around the middle of the twenty-first century and subsequently decline. The peak of global GPP is projected to increase by only 5.4 ± 0.5% co

Warming exacerbates the impacts of ultraviolet radiation in temperate diatoms but alleviates the effect on polar species.

Under global change scenarios, the sea surface temperature is increasing steadily along with other changes to oceanic environments. Consequently, marine diatoms are influenced by multiple ocean global change drivers. We hypothesized that temperature rise mediates the responses of polar and temperate diatoms to UV radiation (UVR) to different extents, and exposed the temperate centric diatoms, Thalassiosira weissflogii and Skeletonema costatum, and a polar pennate diatom Entomoneis sp., to warming (+5°C) for 10 days, then performed short-term incubations under different radiation treatments wit

Arthropod-borne disease challenges from planetary warming, urbanization, and migration.

As the world confronts simultaneous climate and health emergencies, the spread of emerging infectious diseases, particularly arboviruses, underscores the intersection of planetary health, global mobility, and disease risk. Viral pathogens like Oropouche, dengue, and chikungunya are extending their reach, with expanding vector habitats (ticks, mosquitoes, and others) driven by global warming and changing ambient humidity. Arboviral risks due to these unfavorable vector dynamics are exacerbated by voluntary and involuntary migration of people, urbanization with attendant crowding, and suboptimal…
