Neurochemical and morphological changes associated with human epilepsy.

To date a multitude of studies into the morphology and neurochemistry of human epilepsy have been undertaken with variable, and often inconsistent, results. This review summarises these studies on a range of neurotransmitters, neuromodulators, neuropeptides and their receptors. In addition to this, novel changes in cell viability and sprouting have been identified and are discussed. Whether the alterations observed are a result of the seizures or are a contributory factor is unclear. However, it may be that following an initial insult (such as febrile convulsions, status epilepticus or head in

Review article: angiogenesis, neovascular proliferation and vascular pathophysiology as targets for cancer therapy.

A body of evidence that vascular-mediated damage occurs in murine tumours after many existing forms of anti-tumour therapy is rapidly accumulating (see Gray Conference Proceedings edited by Moore & West, 1991). Rapid conventional screens of cells in vitro or using leukaemias of lymphomas will not detect this mode of action and such screens will therefore miss effective agents. A change in the approach to experimental cancer therapy is needed to ensure that this important new avenue is fully investigated. Solid tumours will need to be studied and the importance of specific tumour cell biochemis

The emerging landscape of performance-enhancing peptides modulating GH-IGF1 axis: bridging the gap between clinical evidence and patient self-administration.

Performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) marketed as "research compounds" include unregulated peptides intended to modulate the growth hormone-insulin-like growth factor-1 (GH-IGF-1) axis. The agents most commonly encountered in clinical practice and online self-administration protocols include growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) analogues (e.g., sermorelin, tesamorelin, CJC-1295 with Drug Affinity Complex [DAC], CJC-1295 without DAC), growth hormone secretagogues (GHS; e.g., growth hormone-releasing peptide-2 (GHRP-2), growth hormone-releasing peptide-6 (GHRP-6), hexarelin, ipamorelin), the gro

Assessment of allelopathic activity of Tradescantia spathacea Sw. for weed control.

Tradescantia spathacea Sw. (Commelinaceae) is widely cultivated as an ornamental and medicinal plant in Southeast Asia, and its pharmacological properties are well known. On the other hand, this plant species is classified as an invasive weed in some countries. As a noxious weed, T. spathacea has been reported to disrupt the growth of native plants. However, no study has reported on its allelopathic activity. Thus, we investigated the allelopathic property and inhibitory substance of T. spathacea. The extracts of T. spathacea significantly inhibited the shoots and roots of alfalfa (Medicago sa

Factors that influence trajectories of change in frequency of substance use and quality of life among adolescents receiving a brief intervention.

This study aimed to identify factors influencing trajectories of change in two outcome domains, frequency of substance use and quality of life (QOL), among adolescents receiving a brief evidence-based intervention. Participants were 106 adolescents, aged 13 to 21 years, who met criteria for a substance use disorder. The adolescents received a five-session intervention and completed four assessments over 12 months. Based upon a theoretical and empirical review, five putative predictors were tested: gender, age, severity of conduct disorder, severity of depression, and peer substance involvement

Angiogenesis in cutaneous melanoma: pathogenesis and clinical implications.

Neovacularization is an essential step in the multistage progression of malignant melanoma. The onset of new blood vessel formation is ushered in by the release of VEGF and numerous other angiogenic molecules by the tumor cells. Human melanoma is unique among neoplasms that both avascular (early horizontal growth phase characterized by very slow progression and 99%, 10-year survival) and vascular (late radial and vertical growth phase associated with rapid growth, metastasis and death in many cases), phases are discernible by the naked eye. Although cell biologists have made great strides in u

[Role of interleukin-1-alpha and growth factors in postmenopausal osteoporosis].

This study aims to verify the changes occurring in factors such as interleukin alfa-1 (IL1-alpha) and growth factor (GF1) during surgical menopause, with or without hormone replacement therapy. Forty patients, who underwent hysterectomy, entered this perspective and longitudinal study: in ten out of these forty patients the ovaries were preserved. The remaining thirty patients, whose ovaries were removed, were randomly given either estrogen or estro-progestin therapy or no therapy at all. The IL1-alpha and IGF1 levels, taken a year before, were compared with the levels obtained prior to surger

Opportunistic pathogens and polycocktail drugs fuel dynamic public health threats during the opioid crisis.

More than 100,000 preventable deaths have occurred each year in the United States since 2021 from intravenous drug use. A challenging problem for clinicians, researchers, and public health workers involves understanding a dynamic opioid crisis for implementing state and national policy to support the rehabilitation and treatment of individuals who inject drugs. To address these issues, this study used drug needles obtained from people who inject drugs to address three goals: First, based on a forensic analysis, what narcotics are contained in the needles? Second, are there non-viral pathogens

Epoxy tetrahydrophthalimides as potential bioactive agents: synthesis and computational study.

BACKGROUND: Due to the growing resistance of weeds to known herbicides, the search for new bioactive substances has been increasing in recent years. Imides belong to an important class of chemical compounds known to present various biological activities such as herbicide, fungicide, insecticide, and bactericide. In this study, the synthesis, purification, structural elucidation, and bioassays of four pairs of epoxy tetrahydrophthalimides 15a-18a and 15b-18b were conducted. Additionally in silico studies were performed to identify potential biological targets for the synthesized compounds. RES

Isolation and assessment of the beneficial effect of exopolysaccharide-producing PGPR in Triticum aestivum (L.) plants grown under NaCl and Cd -stressed conditions.

Exopolysaccharide (EPS)-producing beneficial bacteria play a multifaceted role in improving plant growth and adaptive responses against different stressors. In this study, we isolated 25 bacterial strains from pea nodules and were further studied for their sodium chloride (NaCl) and cadmium (Cd) stress tolerance. Based on our results, Rhizobium fabae SR-22 (NCBI Accession number: MG063739.1) showed better tolerance toward salinity and Cd stress and produced a wide range of plant growth-promoting compounds. However, the amount of EPS varies during NaCl and Cd stress. It was important to note th

High concentrations of protein test substances may have non-toxic effects on Daphnia magna: implications for regulatory study designs and ecological risk assessments for GM crops.

Laboratory testing for possible adverse effects of insecticidal proteins on non-target organisms (NTOs) is an important part of many ecological risk assessments for regulatory decision-making about the cultivation of insect-resistant genetically modified (IRGM) crops. To increase confidence in the risk assessments, regulatory guidelines for effects testing specify that representative surrogate species for NTOs are exposed to concentrations of insecticidal proteins that are in excess of worst-case predicted exposures in the field. High concentrations in effects tests are achieved by using prote

Ectopic secretion of a growth hormone-releasing factor. Report of a case of acromegaly with bronchial carcinoid tumor.

Rarely, acromegaly is produced by neuroendocrine neoplasms elaborating a substance similar to or identical with growth hormone-releasing factor. This report reviews the cases described to date and presents the clinicopathologic features of a patient with acromegaly, mild sellar enlargement, and elevated growth hormone levels associated with a large bronchial carcinoid tumor. Normalization of serum growth hormone levels and regression of acromegaly followed resection of the bronchial tumor, which was shown, by bioassay and immunocytochemistry, to contain a growth hormone-releasing factor.

Role of growth factors and their receptors in gastric ulcer healing.

The repair of gastric ulcers requires the reconstitution of epithelial structures and the underlying connective tissue, including vessels and muscle layers. Several growth factors have been implicated in this process, since they are able to regulate important cell functions, such as cell proliferation, migration, differentiation, secretion, and degradation of extracellular matrix, all of which are essential during tissue healing. Epidermal growth factor (EGF), transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha), hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), and trefoil factors (TFFs) are mainly involved in the rec

[Slipped capital femoral epiphysis and biosynthetic growth hormone therapy. A case report].

The case of an adolescent male with short stature and partial growth hormone deficiency who developed a slipped capital femoral epiphysis during the treatment with recombinant growth hormone is reported in this paper. Our patient started GH therapy with recombinant growth hormone at the dose of 15 U/m2/week administered subcutaneously three times a week. After 6 months of GH therapy there was a satisfactory response to the therapy and his growth velocity improved significantly. Unfortunately the patient had pain of the left hip which was exacerbated by walking. The diagnosis of slipped capital

Human retinal extract stimulates the proliferation of human lens epithelial cells.

The proliferation of lens epithelial cells remaining attached to the capsule after extracapsular cataract extraction represents a potential cause of posterior capsule opacification. In view of the reported mitogenic effects of eye derived growth factors on lens epithelial cells in animal studies, we determined to establish whether the human retina produces a factor capable of inducing a similar response in human lens epithelial (HLE) cells. We report that an extract of the human neural retina is capable of increasing the proliferative capacity of HLE cells in culture by 50%. The possible mecha

Effect of transforming growth factor beta on cell proliferation and glycosaminoglycan synthesis by rabbit growth-plate chondrocytes in culture.

The effects of the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) on the growth and glycosaminoglycan synthesis of rabbit growth plate-chondrocytes in culture were studied. In serum-free medium, TGF-beta caused dose-dependent inhibition of DNA synthesis by chondrocytes, measured as [3H]thymidine incorporation (ED50 = 0.1-0.3 ng/ml). The inhibitory effect was maximal at a dose of 1 ng/ml, and extended for a duration of 16-42 h. In contrast, TGF-beta potentiated the synthesis of DNA stimulated by fetal calf serum (FCS). Addition of TGF-beta (1 ng/ml) to cultures containing 10% FCS increased [3H]thym
