The prefrontal cortex of the guinea pig was investigated in a search for afferents from cortical areas outside the frontal lobe using the horseradish peroxidase retrograde tracing technique. An epidemiological study of Wawa village near Kainji Lake in Kwara State of Nigeria led to the source of guinea worm infection, a man-made cattle pond by the village. The people acquired the infection mainly during the dry season by drinking cyclops-infested water of the pond known to be the best and coolest for the rural people through the water was dearer and more difficult to get than the water from the wells. It is suggested that an interdisciplinary approach should replace the usual fractional and departmental planning the provision of water for men and livestock.

Measurement of gastric intraluminal PCO2 and pH in the anesthetized guinea pig enabled simultaneous determination of total H+ and HCO3- gastric secretions. There was quantitative agreement between the release of CO2 and decrease in HCO3- after intragastric instillation of HCl. Complete absence of kidneys was observed in 3 neonatal guinea pigs which died 2-3 da after birth. Congestion of intestines and other organs was also observed. Renal agencies in the guinea pigs appeared to be of rare occurrence. Agenesis of right kidney was observed in 2 of over 500 opossums examined. Both opossums were males, and the corresponding ureters were smaller in diameter than the contralateral ureters. The left kidney was enlarged as a result of compensatory hypertrophy. The lumina of right ureters were found to be obliterated on microscopic examination.

This paper describes the course of infection and development of immunity in guinea-pigs after intradermal inoculation of Leishmania enriettii, and the use of in vivo and in vitro techniques to characterize the immunological response to infection and artificial immunization. Serological tests for treponemal disease were undertaken among the inhabitants of 10 census units in the Eastern Highlands of New Guinea. Many sera gave reactive results to some or all of the tests performed. To exclude biological false positive reactions the Treponema pallidum immobilization (TPI) test was carried out on each serum, the results being taken to indicate the presence or absence of treponemal disease in the individual.
