Therapist Behavior During Exposure Tasks Predicts Habituation and Clinical Outcome in Three Randomized Controlled Trials for Pediatric OCD.

This study measured therapist behaviors in relation to subsequent habituation within exposure tasks, and also tested their direct and indirect relationships (via habituation) with clinical outcomes of exposure therapy. We observed 459 videotaped exposure tasks with 111 participants in three clinical trials for pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (POTS trials). Within exposure tasks, therapist behaviors and patient fear were coded continuously. Outcomes were habituation and posttreatment change in symptom severity, global improvement, and treatment response. More therapist behaviors that en

Habituation of evoked responses is greater in patients with familial hemiplegic migraine than in controls: a contrast with the common forms of migraine.

BACKGROUND: Familial hemiplegic migraine (FHM) is a rare, dominantly inherited subtype of migraine with transient hemiplegia during the aura phase. Mutations in at least three different genes can produce the FHM phenotype. The mutated FHM genes code for ion transport proteins that animal and cellular studies have associated with disturbed ion homeostasis, altered cellular excitability, neurotransmitter release, and decreased threshold for cortical spreading depression. The common forms of migraine are characterized interictally by a habituation deficit of cortical and subcortical evoked respon

Virtual reality as a mechanism for exposure therapy.

Virtual reality (VR) is as effective in inducing emotional responses as reality and its application is extremely valuable in exposure treatment. In virtual environments, the patients experience similar physiological symptoms and fear as they do in real life situations, thereby facilitating the habituation process. Our goal is to offer an overview of the current panorama of VR and psychotherapy, underlining the (virtual) exposure technique and the studies that focus on panic disorder treatment through the use of VR. The literature was revised through consultation to the ISI and PubMed databases

Anxiety-induced cognitive bias in non-human animals.

As in humans, 'cognitive biases' in the way in which animals judge ambiguous stimuli may be influenced by emotional state and hence a valuable new indicator of animal emotion. There is increasing evidence that animals experiencing different emotional states following exposure to long-term environmental manipulations show contrasting biases in their judgement of ambiguous stimuli. However, the specific type of induced emotional state is usually unknown. We investigated whether a short-term manipulation of emotional state has a similar effect on cognitive bias, using changes in light intensity;

Habituation of sympathetic skin response in migraine and tension type headache.

This study aimed to investigate the changes of habituations in the autonomic function of patients suffering from migraine or tension type headache through sympathetic skin responses. Patients with migraine without aura (n=26), with episodic tension type headache without migraine (n=28) and 30 healthy controls were studied. During continuous stimulation, four blocks of 20 responses were sequentially recorded. Mean amplitude changes in the second, third and fourth blocks are expressed as the percentages of the first block. In both headache groups, there was a lack of habituation compared to the

Exhaustion is associated with reduced habituation of free cortisol responses to repeated acute psychosocial stress.

We investigated the association between exhaustion and the habituation of free cortisol responses to repeated stress exposure. The study comprised 25 healthy male subjects (38-59 years) who were confronted three times with the Trier Social Stress Test. Mean cortisol responses showed the well-known general habituation effect. A two-way interaction day by exhaustion (p<0.05) indicated that mean cortisol responses vary across stress sessions depending on the extent of exhaustion. Linear regression revealed a negative dose-response relationship between exhaustion and the degree of habituation (p<0

Effects of rotation on the P13 mid-latency auditory evoked potential in rat.

The P13 mid-latency auditory evoked potential in Rat is a sleep state-dependent response thought to be equivalent to the human P50 potential, a measure of the output of the reticular activating system. The amplitude of these potentials can be considered a measure of level of arousal, while, using a paired stimulus paradigm, the degree of habituation of the responses also can be assessed. Different durations of rotation were found to reduce the amplitude of the P13 potential, which recovered in a duration-dependent manner. Different durations of rotation led to decreases in habituation of the P

Activation and habituation in olfaction--an fMRI study.

This study investigated human BOLD responses in primary and higher order olfactory cortices following presentation of short- and long-duration odorant stimuli using a 3-T MR scanner. The goal was to identify temporal differences in the course of the response that might underlie habituation. A short-duration stimulus (9 s) consistently activated the primary olfactory cortex (POC). After a long stimulus (60 s), the temporal form of the response differed in different parts of the olfactory network: (1) The POC (piriform, entorhinal cortex, amygdala) and, interestingly, the hippocampus and, to a c

Antidepressants preferentially enhance habituation to novelty in the olfactory bulbectomized rat.

RATIONALE: The mechanisms whereby antidepressant drugs exert their therapeutic effects remain unknown. Responses to stressful stimuli are currently thought to contribute to the onset and course of affective disorders. It has been postulated that antidepressants might act by ameliorating response patterns to challenging life events, such as processes of reactivity and/or habituation. OBJECTIVE: Using the olfactory bulbectomy (OBX) rat model, this study examined the effects of various antidepressants on measures of reactivity and habituation in behavioral tests assessing responses to novel stim

Cephalic and digital vasomotor orienting responses: the effect of response localization, stimulus type and stimulus repetition.

Two studies are reported; the first dealing with vascular responses in the head area and in finger to tone, bell and mental arithmetic stimuli, the second, with the same responses to a series of 20 tones. Dilation responses from the head area were considerably less frequently obtained to pure tone than the other three stimuli, even on first exposure. This may account for some of the disparities in results between Eastern and Western European investigators. Habituation to tone from the head, and to a lesser extent from the finger, involved a shift from vasodilative to vasoconstrictive responses

Fetal habituation in high-risk pregnancies.

Habituation is a basic form of learning and probably requires an intact central nervous system. Habituation in the behavioural response to vibration in 40 normal human fetuses was compared with that in a group of high-risk pregnancies with an increased risk of fetal neurological damage. Highly significant differences in habituation patterns between the high-risk groups and normal control subjects were found. This test may offer a method of assessing the integrity of the fetal central nervous system.

Precocious cardiac orienting in a human anencephalic infant.

An anencephalic infant, 3 to 6 weeks old, responded to acoustic stimulation with cardiac decelerations typical of the response pattern seen in normal, older infants. Such precocity implies unexpected competence of lower brain structures and suggests that, in the normal infant, feedback from immature higher centers may sometimes interfere with rather than modulate the functioning of lower centers.

Normal acid-base status of arterial blood from the conscious, chair-restrained squirrel monkey.

Normal acid-base status of arterial blood (pHa =7.40, PaCO2=38.1 Torr) was demonstrated for conscious, restrained squirrel monkeys when environmental stimuli were minimized and monkeys are habituated to experimental procedures. These results indicate the potential for using squirrel monkeys in experiments in which normal acid-base status is a significant factor.

Nonassociative explanations of behavioral changes induced by central cholinergic drugs.

Studies concerning the effects of cholinergic stimulants and blockers on habituation, alternation, classical and instrumental conditioning, differentiation, and discrimination are summarized and discussed. This analysis suggests that many results originally ascribed to associative changes can be more economically accounted for by nonassociative factors inherent in the experiments. Furthermore, the data show that neither one of the more economical nonassuciative explanations at either the sensory, the drive, or the response level can by itself account for the complex interactions observed. Endocrine correlates of stress vulnerability.

Psychological stress is implicated as one element in a constellation of risk factors for the development and maintenance of psychosomatic disease. Endocrine responses to stressful experience vary widely among individuals, and may account for some of the individual variability in vulnerability to development of psychosomatic symptoms under stress. Endocrine stress responsiveness probably has a large genetic component, but is also known to be modifiable by prolonged and/or profound stressful experience. Social and cognitive factors influence the pituitary-adrenal response to stress, and sex diff

Brain-Wide Circuitry Underlying Altered Auditory Habituation in Zebrafish Models of Autism.

Auditory processing is widely understood to occur differently in autism, though the patterns of brain activity underlying these differences are not well understood. The diversity of autism also means brain-wide networks may change in various ways to produce similar behavioral outputs. We used larval zebrafish to investigate auditory habituation in three genetic lines relevant to autism: fmr1, mecp2, and cntnap2 In free-swimming behavioral tests, we found each line had a unique profile of auditory hyperresponsiveness and/or reduced habituation compared with wild types. Combining the optical tra

Understanding inter-individual variability of experimental pain habituation and conditioned pain modulation in healthy individuals.

Although reduced experimental pain habituation is proposed as a proxy of diminished endogenous pain modulatory capacity in chronic pain, prior studies show contradictory findings. Even across healthy participants, pain habituation varies substantially, which may relate to another measure of endogenous pain modulation, i.e., conditioned pain modulation (CPM). Hence, this study investigated the relationship between pain habituation and CPM. Pain habituation was assessed in 45 healthy participants between two blocks of 15-20 contact-heat stimuli applied to the hand. Habituation of subjective pain

Social Behaviour is Impaired in the R6/2 Mouse Model of Huntington’s Disease.

BACKGROUND: Huntington’s disease (HD) is characterised by a combination of motor, cognitive and psychiatric symptoms. HD patients also exhibit deficits in social behaviour. While motor and cognitive dysfunction in the R6/2 transgenic mouse model of HD has been well described, social disorders have not been reported. OBJECTIVE: To compare social behaviour in R6/2 and wildtype (WT) mice, using two different measures of sociability. METHODS: R6/2 mice were tested in the habituation/dishabituation test as a measure of social recognition, and the resident-intruder paradigm, as a measure of social

Hemodynamic effects of habituation to a week-long program of neuromuscular electrical stimulation.

OBJECTIVES: Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) of the calf muscles has been shown to cause instantaneous increases in venous outflow from the lower leg and could be used as an adjunct to current gold-standard compression therapies for the prevention of venous stasis and its related pathologies. However, little is known about the effects of NMES in combination with compression therapies on subject comfort, compliance and popliteal venous blood flow over the course of a week-long NMES protocol. This study aimed to assess the effects of a NMES and compression protocol for the prevention

Effects of prior exposure to office noise and music on aspects of working memory.

Previous research has suggested that prior exposure to noise reduces the effect of subsequent exposure due to habituation. Similarly, a number of studies have shown that exposure to Mozart's music leads to better subsequent spatial reasoning performance. Two studies were conducted to extend these findings. The first one examined whether habituation occurs to office noise (including speech) and, if so, how long it takes to develop. Thirty-six young adults participated in the first study which compared effects of office noise with quiet on the performance of a maths task. The study also examined
