Insertion sequence IS1016 and absence of Haemophilus capsulation genes in the Brazilian purpuric fever clone of Haemophilus influenzae biogroup aegyptius.

Brazilian purpuric fever (BPF) strains of Haemophilus influenzae biogroup aegyptius form a clone of organisms distinct from more innocuous, conjunctivitis-associated isolates. There has been controversy over whether the virulence of BPF strains might derive from the presence of a polysaccharide capsule analogous to that found in conventional invasive H. influenzae, a controversy fuelled by the observation (G. Nontypeable Haemophilus Influenzae Sepsis in a Term Neonate.

We reported a term newborn case of early onset sepsis caused by nontypeable Haemophilus Influenzae (NTHi) with massive bacterial invasion in the placenta. Based on the consistent results of maternal placental pathology and neonatal bacterial culture, we diagnosed this as vertical transmission of NTHi via vaginal delivery. In general, NTHi infections occur in preterm infants, and our term infant case is very unusual. In conclusion, clinicians should consider NTHi as a cause of neonatal sepsis, even in term infants.

Fatal Haemophilus influenzae type a sepsis in an infant.

Haemophilus influenzae type a can cause severe sepsis, as demonstrated by the case described. Epidemiology of sepsis in childhood is changing. Regardless of the pathogen involved, management of children with septic shock involves resuscitative measures and empiric antibiotics. The following case of H. influenzae type a sepsis proved fatal in spite of appropriate therapy.

The fimbria gene cluster of nonencapsulated Haemophilus influenzae.

The occurrence of fimbria gene clusters in nonencapsulated Haemophilus influenzae strains from chronic bronchitis patients (n = 58), patients with acute otitis media (n = 13), and healthy carriers (n = 12) was determined by DNA hybridization and PCR, based on sequences of fimbriate H. influenzae type b. Although an average of 18% of all nonencapsulated strains had a fimbria gene cluster consisting of hifA to hifE inserted in the chromosome between purE and pepN, differences in the frequency of fimbria cluster-positive strains were observed, depending on the source of isolates. The compositions

Infectious arthritis in the neonate caused by Haemophilus influenzae.

Two newborns had hematogenous pyarthrosis due to Haemophilus influenzae. One infant had signs of sepsis and dactylitis involving several fingers and toes. She also developed a soft tissue abscess, meningitis, and a septic hip, and was found to be infected with a nontypable organism. In the second infant, a shoulder traumatized at birth became infected with a type b strain. In both cases, the patients were successfully treated, but delays occurred in selecting the optimal therapeutic agent because of failure to appreciate that Haemophilus may cause systemic infection in the newborn. In the firs

Vaccine Candidates against Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae: a Review.

Nonencapsulated, nontypeable Hemophilus influenzae (NTHi) remains an important cause of acute otitis and respiratory diseases in children and adults. NTHi bacteria are one of the major causes of respiratory tract infections, including acute otitis media, cystic fibrosis, and community-acquired pneumonia among children, especially in developing countries. The bacteria can also cause chronic diseases such as chronic bronchitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the lower respiratory tract of adults. Such bacteria express several outer membrane proteins, some of which have been studied

Haemophilus influenzae and smoking-related obstructive airways disease.

BACKGROUND: Intralumenal bacteria play a critical role in the pathogenesis of acute infective episodes and airway inflammation. Antigens from colonizing bacteria such as nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) may contribute to chronic lung disease through an immediate hypersensitivity response. The objective of this study was to determine the presence of specific NTHi-IgE antibodies in subjects with chronic bronchitis (CB) and COPD who had smoked. METHODS: Serum, sputum, and saliva samples were collected from subjects with CB and moderate-severe COPD and healthy aged-matched controls. Tota

[Epidemiological characterization of Haemophilus influenzae using molecular markers].

BACKGROUND: Haemophilus influenzae is the etiological agent of acute- (meningitis, sepsis, pneumonia, epiglottis) and chronic infections (cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary infections). Several clinical (chronic infections) and epidemiological situations (community and hospital outbreaks) require the use of epidemiological typing methods. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated four typing methods to characterize clinical isolates of H. influenzae. METHODS: Forty-five clinical strains of H. influenzae were studied by biotype, serotype and antibiotype techniques, and the following methods: isoenz

[Neonatal Haemophilus influenzae infection. Apropos of 4 cases].

Four cases of neonatal haemophilus influenzae have been reported in Intensive Care Unite of Timone's Hospital (Marseille) during a 2 year period. Three of the cases were due to non typable organism, one was a type III. Hemoculture was positive twice. None of the patients had meningitis. Clinically it was a neonatal septicemia without particularity. Prognosis is bad (50% mortality). Several hypothesis have been proposed to explain the increase of the frequency of this neonatal infection. One of the major problem is the choice and the moment of prescription of antibiotherapy.

Isolated uvulitis due to Haemophilus influenzae type b.

Infections of the uvula are infrequently recognized and have been previously described only in association with group A streptococcal pharyngitis or Haemophilus influenzae type b epiglottitis. Three cases of H influenzae type b bacteremic uvulitis are described. In suspected cases of H influenzae type b uvulitis, a lateral neck radiograph should be performed and parenteral antibiotics initiated.

Bacteremic Haemophilus influenzae genitourinary tract infections in adults.

Six cases of bacteremia associated with genitourinary (GU) tract infections in adults due to Haemophilus influenzae occurred during a 42-month period at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, Canada. Four cases were associated with pregnancy or abortion, one with acute salpingitis, and one with urinary tract manipulation. Four of the five strains available for serotyping were nontypable. Clinical conjunctivitis was present in one patient, and infants born to two other patients developed purulent conjunctivitis from which H influenzae was grown. These six cases, and others from the literature,

Nasopharyngeal and Adenoid Colonization by Haemophilus influenzae and Haemophilus parainfluenzae in Children Undergoing Adenoidectomy and the Ability of Bacterial Isolates to Biofilm Production.

Haemophili are pathogenic or opportunistic bacteria often colonizing the upper respiratory tract mucosa. The prevalence of Haemophilus influenzae (with serotypes distribution), and H. parainfluenzae in the nasopharynx and/or the adenoid core in children with recurrent pharyngotonsillitis undergoing adenoidectomy was assessed. Haemophili isolates were investigated for their ability to biofilm production.Nasopharyngeal swabs and the adenoid core were collected from 164 children who underwent adenoidectomy (2-5 years old). Bacteria were identified by the standard methods. Serotyping of H. influen

Purpura Fulminans Secondary to Haemophilus influenzae in an Infant.

Purpura fulminans (PF) is a hematological emergency that requires timely diagnosis for effective management. In this report, we discuss the case of a five-month-old previously healthy male who presented to the emergency department due to sudden-onset lethargy and rash in the setting of intermittent fevers, emesis, and diarrhea. Shortly after admission, the patient was noted to have rapidly progressive PF and was intubated due to impeding respiratory failure and hemodynamic instability requiring the institution of vasopressors and steroids for catecholamine-resistant, refractory septic shock.
