Freeman-Sheldon syndrome (FSS) or craniocarpotarsal dysplasia is characterized by a triad of symptoms: 1. Masklike, whistling facial expression (whistling face syndrome), 2. Ulnar deviation of digits II to V and adduction contracture of the thumb and 3. Foot deformities. The pathogenesis of this malformation is unknown. Heredity is autosomal dominant and not sex-linked. Genetic counseling of affected individuals is imperative. The differential diagnosis should exclude the possibility of arthrogryposis multiplex congenita and particularly congenital windmill deformity of the fingers, which can

Tyrosine kinase inhibitors are novel antineoplastic drugs that make use of the molecular abnormalities that have been discovered in certain types of tumours. These agents are associated with important dermatological side effects. This case report discusses an atypical presentation of the hand-foot syndrome in one patient treated with sorafenib. A 78-year-old man, recently started on sorafenib for the treatment of hepatocarcinoma with lung metastasis, presented to the emergency room with painful blistering lesions on the palms, soles and scrotum for 1 week. A punch biopsy was performed and sora

BACKGROUND: BRAF and MEK inhibitors are new targeted therapies which are used in the treatment of malignancies, in particular of malignant melanoma.
SIDE EFFECTS: Cutaneous side effects are common during the treatment with both types of inhibitors. These side effects include inflammatory reactions such as maculopapular and papulopustular exanthema, hand-foot syndrome, panniculitis, paronychia, photo- and radio-sensitization. As a class effect, BRAF-inhibitors induce proliferative disorders of keratinocytes and melanocytes, such as palmoplantar hyperkeratosis (as part of the hand-foot syndrome

The cheiro-oral syndrome is a well-known peculiar sensory disturbance seen around the corner of the mouth and in the palm of the hand on the same side. However, sensory disturbance around the corner of the mouth, in the palm of the hand and in the foot on the same side (cheiro-oral-pedal syndrome) has not been reported until now. We examined 2 cases of cheiro-oral-pedal syndrome; the lesion responsible was confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging to be in the medial lemniscus and in the ventral ascending tract of the trigeminal nerve.

The present study reports on two siblings of different sex, affected with a condition corresponding to Mohr syndrome. Characteristic symptoms such as epicanthic folds, a broad and flattened nasal root, a lobulated and hamartomatous tongue, poly- and syndactyly on both hands and feet, doubling of the big toes with less frequent features such as marked psychosomatic retardation and overall hypotony have been observed. All the cited anomalies have been of importance in the differential diagnosis. Difficulties associated with classification of new syndromes and the importance for practical clinica

The classical case of a Gorlin-Cohen-Syndrom (= fronto-metaphyseal dysplasis=FMD) is presented. The disease has been mentioned in literature for the first time in 1969 and has been described four times up to now. The characteristic features of this syndrome are very prominent supraorbital ridges with generalized bone dysplasia and joint deformities.

BACKGROUND: Ectrodactyly, also called split hand/foot malformation, is a rare birth defect where some middle fingers or toes are missing or not formed properly, making the hand or foot look split. This condition can happen on its own or as part of more complicated syndromes such as ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-cleft syndrome. Surgery for young patients is usually tailored to their specific needs on the basis of how much the condition affects their ability to function and their appearance.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this manuscript, we reported a case of a Punjabi 6-year-old female presenting

Sorafenib is an orally administered active multikinase inhibitor for metastatic renal cell carcinoma that is now considered a standard agent. Skin toxicity, such as hand-foot skin reaction, is one of the frequent adverse effects of sorafenib. On the other hand, sorafenib-induced erythema multiforme is very rare, and Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis induced by sorafenib have not been reported. We report the first case of Stevens-Johnson syndrome caused by sorafenib for metastatic renal cell carcinoma.

The cerebellum, a lateralised organ, plays a crucial role in motor control. Still, its involvement in hand and foot dominance remains inadequately understood, primarily in the right and left-side dominant population. A potential manifestation of this lateralisation is the neocerebellar extinction syndrome, previously linked to mild muscle hypotonia and moderate passivity in the non-preferred hand. A more precise understanding of the cerebellum's role in limb dominance patterns could provide valuable insights into motor learning, rehabilitation therapies, and neuroplasticity. This study explore

BACKGROUND: Sorafenib is an orally active multikinase inhibitor approved for the treatment of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, clinical parameters that may predict the treatment outcomes in sorafenib-treated advanced HCC patients remains unknown.
METHODS: A total of 99 advanced (BCLC C) HCC patients treated with sorafenib as an initial treatment modality from January 2007 to December 2011 were retrospectively reviewed. Overall survival was the primary endpoint for the analysis. Various clinical parameters including tumour stage and adverse effects to sorafenib were analysed.

OBJECTIVE: Axitinib is a potent and selective second-generation inhibitor of vascular endothelial growth factor receptors 1, 2 and 3. The efficacy and safety of axitinib in Japanese patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma were evaluated.
METHODS: A subgroup analysis was conducted in Japanese patients enrolled in the randomized Phase III trial of axitinib versus sorafenib after failure of one prior systemic therapy for metastatic renal cell carcinoma.
RESULTS: Twenty-five (of 361) and 29 (of 362) patients randomized to the axitinib and sorafenib arms, respectively, were Japanese and inc

BACKGROUND: Several studies have demonstrated liposomal doxorubicin (Doxil) to be an active antineoplastic agent in platinum-resistant ovarian cancer, with dose limiting toxicity of the standard dosing regimen (50 mg/m(2) q 4 weeks) being severe erythrodysesthesia ("hand-foot syndrome") and stomatitis. We wished to develop a more tolerable liposomal doxorubicin treatment regimen and document its level of activity in a well-defined patient population with platinum/paclitaxel-refractory disease.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patients with ovarian or fallopian tube cancers or primary peritoneal carcino

We describe the anaesthetic management of a 72-year-old man with myasthenic syndrome. Pre-operatively, he was treated with 3,4-diaminopyridine and showed a strong hand grip. During general anaesthesia with nitrous oxide and sevoflurane in oxygen, a mechanomyograph and two accelerographs were set up for the hands and left foot to monitor neuromuscular function. Insufficient force and acceleration of contraction with 1 Hz stimulation was observed in the hands. In the foot, the twitches produced by 1 Hz and train-of-four stimulation could barely be detected using the accelerograph, and the train-

BACKGROUND: Split hand/foot malformation (SHFM) is a group of congenital skeletal disorders which may occur either as an isolated abnormality or in syndromic forms with extra-limb manifestations. Chromosomal micro-duplication or micro-triplication involving 17p13.3 region has been described as the most common cause of split hand/foot malformation with long bone deficiency (SHFLD) in several different Caucasian and Asian populations. Gene dosage effect of the extra copies of BHLHA9 gene at this locus has been implicated in the pathogenesis of SHFLD.

BACKGROUND: Foot problems are common in patients with Marfan syndrome because of the ligamentous laxity that affects the weightbearing joints most. Such patients frequently are seen by their general practitioners or podiatrists. Educating primary health care providers about a metatarsal index, if it is sufficiently sensitive and specific, may help patients get early and appropriate workup for connective tissue disorders.
METHODS: A metatarsal equivalent to the metacarpal index (MCI) in the hand was evaluated as a diagnostic tool for Marfan syndrome (and possibly other connective tissue disord

Split-hand/foot malformation (SHFM), also called as ectrodactyly. SHFM is a natural limb deformity, characterized by a deep standard split of the hand and/ or foot due to the absence of the central shafts. SHFM may happen as a separate existent or as part of a syndrome. Both forms are constantly established in association with chromosomal rearrangements resemblant to translocations or deletion. It is clinically and genetically diverse and shows substantially autosomal dominant heritage with variable expressivity and reduced penetrance. Cases presenting with SHFM features should be rigorously d

Karsch-Neugebauer syndrome is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by split foot, split hand anomalies in association with congenital nystagmus. It is an inherited condition and often occurs in both the hands and the feet. Its pattern of inheritance is autosomal dominant, though occasionally it can skip a generation. It affects about 1 in 90,000 babies, with males and females equally being affected. This rare syndrome may be associated with additional abnormalities such as hypodontia, delayed eruption, variation in morphology and position of teeth, but it is not widely documented. In view o
