Chlamydia buteonis in birds of prey presented to California wildlife rehabilitation facilities.

Chlamydial infections, caused by a group of obligate, intracellular, gram-negative bacteria, have health implications for animals and humans. Due to their highly infectious nature and zoonotic potential, staff at wildlife rehabilitation centers should be educated on the clinical manifestations, prevalence, and risk factors associated with Chlamydia spp. infections in raptors. The objectives of this study were to document the prevalence of chlamydial DNA shedding and anti-chlamydial antibodies in raptors admitted to five wildlife rehabilitation centers in California over a one-year period. Chla

Co-localization of tyrosine hydroxylase and zebrin II immunoreactivities in Purkinje cells of the mutant mice, tottering and tottering/leaner.

The mutant mice tottering, leaner and the compound heterozygous tottering/leaner exhibit varying degrees of several abnormal neurological phenotypes including petit mal-like epilepsy, ataxia and an intermittent myoclonus-like movement disorder. Aberrant expression of tyrosine hydroxylase in cerebellar Purkinje cells of tottering, leaner and tottering/leaner mice has been observed previously [Austin M. C. et al. (1992) Molec. Brain Res. 15, 227-240; Hess E. J. and Wilson M. C. (1991) Neuron 6, 123-132]. In the present study, the distribution of tyrosine hydroxylase expression was compared with

Hormonal and behavioral responses to stress in lactating and non-lactating female common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus).

In several mammalian species, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) and behavioral responses to stressors are down-regulated in lactating females, possibly preventing stress-induced disruptions of maternal care. Experimental elevations of HPA axis hormones have been found to inhibit maternal behavior in lactating common marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus), raising the question of whether lactating female marmosets also have blunted endogenous responses to stress. Therefore, we compared HPA and behavioral responses to standardized stressors in reproductively experienced female common marmosets

Area Entropy and Quantized Mass of Black Holes from Information Theory.

In this paper, we present a derivation of the black hole area entropy with the relationship between entropy and information. The curved space of a black hole allows objects to be imaged in the same way as camera lenses. The maximal information that a black hole can gain is limited by both the Compton wavelength of the object and the diameter of the black hole. When an object falls into a black hole, its information disappears due to the no-hair theorem, and the entropy of the black hole increases correspondingly. The area entropy of a black hole can thus be obtained, which indicates that the B

Histopathologic Features and Viral Antigen Distribution of H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Virus Clade 2.3.4.4b from the 2022-2023 Outbreak in Iowa Wild Birds.

In 2022, a new epornitic of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus clade 2.3.4.4b emerged in U.S. domestic poultry with high prevalence in wild bird populations. We describe pathological findings of HPAI H5N1 in nine wild birds encompassing eight different species, including Accipitriformes (red-tailed hawk, bald eagle), Cathartiforme (turkey vulture), Falconiforme (peregrine falcon), Strigiforme (one adult great-horned owl, one juvenile great-horned owl), Pelecaniforme (American white pelican), and Anseriformes (American green-winged teal, trumpeter swan). All these birds died na

Cluster of atherosclerosis in a captive population of black kites (Milvus migrans subsp.) in France and effect of nutrition on the plasma lipid profile.

From January 2010 to March 2013, a captive colony of 83 black kites (Milvus migrans subsp.) in France experienced increased mortality related to atherosclerosis with an incidence of 4.4% per year. On histopathology, all kites had advanced atherosclerotic lesions, with several birds presenting abdominal hemorrhage and aortic rupture. In January 2012, a dietary change was instituted and consisted of introducing fish into the kites' diet. During the following 15 mo, the plasma lipid profile was monitored as well as body weight, food offered, and flight activity. Total and low-density lipoprotein

Rhabdochlamydia spp. in an Oregon raptor.

PCR-based approach was used to examine the rate of Chlamydia positivity in raptors from wild bird rehabilitation centers in Oregon. Three of 82 birds were identified as positive for Chlamydia with this PCR. Sequence analysis of 16S ribosomal DNA from 2 of these birds confirmed the presence of DNA from phylum Chlamydiae. One bird was positive for Chlamydia psittaci in both choanal and cloacal swabs. The second bird, a louse-infested red-tailed hawk, had evidence of choanal colonization by "Candidatus Rhabdochlamydia" spp. Our study describes evidence of this Chlamydia-like organism in the Unite

Numerical Simulation of Flow-Induced Noise in High Pressure Reducing Valve.

The main objective of this paper is to study the characteristics of flow-induced noise in high pressure reducing valve (HPRV) and to provide some guidance for noise control. Based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD), numerical method was used to compute flow field. Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings Model was applied to obtain acoustic signals. The unsteady flow field shows that noise sources are located at the bottom of plug for valve without perforated plate, and noise sources are behind the plate for valve with perforated plate. Noise directivity analysis and spectrum characteristics indicate t

Sonar sound groups and increased terminal buzz duration reflect task complexity in hunting bats.

More difficult tasks are generally regarded as such because they demand greater attention. Echolocators provide rare insight into this relationship because biosonar signals can be monitored. Here we show that bats produce longer terminal buzzes and more sonar sound groups during their approach to prey under presumably more difficult conditions. Specifically, we found Daubenton's bats, Myotis daubentonii, produced longer buzzes when aerial-hawking versus water-trawling prey, but that bats taking revolving air- and water-borne prey produced more sonar sound groups than did the bats when taking s

The Comparative Anatomy of the Metatarsal Foot Pad in Eight Species of Birds of Prey and Owls with Regard to the Development of Pododermatitis.

Pododermatitis (bumblefoot) occurs commonly in birds of prey and owls and shows species-specific differences in its prevalence, especially between falcons and hawks. The development of the disease is particularly associated with circulatory disorders of the feet. To compare the blood vessel supply of the foot sole, especially the metatarsal foot pad, macroscopic dissections including intravascular injection of latex, contrast µCT scans with barium sulphate, corrosion casts (epoxy resin), and histological examinations of the skin were performed in eight avian species. The main supplying artery …

When there is no communication between urban planners and public health operators: urban Dermanyssus gallinae infestations in humans.

At the international level, it is necessary to apply urban health strategies that can integrate concrete actions to protect and promote health in urban and architectural planning. In cities, the "urban fauna" mostly consists of synanthropic birds (sparrows, starlings, swallows, martins, jackdaws, crows, hawks, gulls, pigeons) that have adapted to a continuous relationship with humans. These animals enrich the ecological network of biodiversity but also pose health problems. The most successful avian colonizers are pigeons (Columba livia), which proliferate due to the abundance of foo…

An immunohistochemical study of the endocrine pancreas in raptors.

The cytoarchitecture of the endocrine pancreas of 10 raptors (golden eagles, peregrine falcons, Saker falcon, turkey vultures, red-tailed hawk and unspecified falcon) was examined by immunohistochemistry. Three islet types were identified: type A mixed islets composed mainly by glucagon (A)-secreting cells, type B mixed islets with predominantly insulin (B)-secreting cell component and type M mixed islets (type M) consisting of variable number of glucagon-, insulin- and somatostatin (D)-secreting cells. The latter were further characterized into Type I, II or III according to the cell distribu

Regularised Spectral Estimation for High-Dimensional Point Processes.

Advances in modern technology have enabled the simultaneous recording of neural spiking activity across large numbers of neurons, which statistically can be represented by a multivariate point process. We characterise the second order structure of this process via the spectral density matrix, a frequency domain equivalent of the covariance matrix. In the context of neuronal analysis, statistics based on the spectral density matrix can be used to infer connectivity in the brain network between individual neurons. However, the high-dimensional nature of spike train data mean that it is often dif

Vibroacoustic response of confined rotating flow: A physically-coupled numerical study.

This work presents a methodology to study the noise generated by confined flows, i.e., flows enclosed within a device, which therefore significantly influence both the flow characteristics and the transmission of noise. A coupling workflow is implemented to link computational fluid dynamics simulations and structural dynamic analysis, where the pressure field computed in the fluid domain provides the forcing terms for the structural vibration equations. Outside the solid structure, the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings acoustic analogy is applied to compute the noise radiated by the vibrating structure

Cosmological Constant from Quantum Gravitational θ Vacua and the Gravitational Hall Effect.

We provide a new perspective on the cosmological constant by exploring the background-independent Wheeler-DeWitt quantization of general relativity. The Chern-Simons-Kodama state of quantum gravity, a generalization of the Hartle-Hawking and Vilenkin states, has a striking structural similarity to the topological field theory of the quantum Hall effect. As a result, we study the gravitational topological θ sectors in analogy to Yang-Mills theory. We find that the cosmological constant Λ is intimately linked to the θ parameter by θ=12π^{2}/(Λℓ_{Pl}^{2}) mod 2π due to the fact that Chern-Simons-
