[Fatal accidents of motorcycle riders. Comparison of the craniocervical injury picture before and following introduction of the legally sanctioned protective helmet rule].

From 1982 to 1987 79 bodies of motorcycle riders have been dissected. Accident investigations by police proved, that 33 of them used protective helmets in the moment of accident, 40 of the victims were unhelmeted. In case of 6 accidents police investigations could not assign victims to one of those groups definitely. Our study demonstrates the change in injury patterns of the craniocervical region before and after introduction of liability for using protective helmets. We could determine, that the establishment of this law resulted in a significant recession of serious skull and brain injuries

Auditory and vestibular dysfunction associated with blast-related traumatic brain injury.

The dramatic escalation of blast exposure in military deployments has created an unprecedented amount of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and associated auditory impairment. Auditory dysfunction has become the most prevalent individual service-connected disability, with compensation totaling more than 1 billion dollars annually. Impairment due to blast can include peripheral hearing loss, central auditory processing deficits, vestibular impairment, and tinnitus. These deficits are particularly challenging in the TBI population, as symptoms can be mistaken for posttraumatic stress disorder, mental-

Therapy effects of head orthoses in positional plagiocephaly.

PURPOSE: Head orthoses offer a valuable therapeutic option for infants with positional plagiocephaly. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the influence of therapy start and duration due to improvement of cranial asymmetry. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 102 children during the years 2009-2014 were included. The patient cohort was divided according to age at the beginning of therapy (younger/older than 7.5 months) and duration (less/more than 150 days). To evaluate the therapy, ear shift (ES), Cranial Vault Asymmetry Index (CVAI), and Cranial Index (CI) were calculated pre- a

Physics-Informed Machine Learning Improves Detection of Head Impacts.

In this work we present a new physics-informed machine learning model that can be used to analyze kinematic data from an instrumented mouthguard and detect impacts to the head. Monitoring player impacts is vitally important to understanding and protecting from injuries like concussion. Typically, to analyze this data, a combination of video analysis and sensor data is used to ascertain the recorded events are true impacts and not false positives. In fact, due to the nature of using wearable devices in sports, false positives vastly outnumber the true positives. Yet, manual video analysis is ti

A computational modelling tool for prediction of head reshaping following endoscopic strip craniectomy and helmet therapy for the treatment of scaphocephaly.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic strip craniectomy followed by helmet therapy (ESCH) is a minimally invasive approach for correcting sagittal craniosynostosis. The treatment involves a patient-specific helmet designed to facilitate lateral growth while constraining sagittal expansion. In this study, finite element modelling was used to predict post-treatment head reshaping, improving our comprehension of the necessary helmet therapy duration. METHOD: Six patients (aged 11 weeks to 9 months) who underwent ESCH at Connecticut Children's Hospital were enrolled in this study. Day-1 post-operative 3D scans

Head Impact Exposure in Youth and Collegiate American Football.

The relationship between head impact and subsequent brain injury for American football players is not well-defined, especially for youth. The objective of this study is to quantify and assess Head Impact Exposure (HIE) metrics among youth and collegiate football players. This multi-season study enrolled 639 unique athletes (354 collegiate; 285 youth, ages 9-14), recording 476,209 head impacts (367,337 collegiate; 108,872 youth) over 971 sessions (480 collegiate; 491 youth). Youth players experienced 43 and 65% fewer impacts per competition and practice, respectively, and lower impact magnitude

Quantifying Youth Football Helmet Performance: Assessing Linear and Rotational Head Acceleration.

Youth football helmet testing standards have served to largely eliminate catastrophic head injury from the sport. These standards, though, do not presently consider concussion and do not offer consumers the capacity to differentiate the impact performance of youth football helmets. This study adapted the previously developed Summation of Tests for the Analysis of Risk (STAR) equation for youth football helmet assessment. This adaptation made use of a youth-specific testing surrogate, on-field data collected from youth football players, and a concussion risk function developed for youth athlete

Concussion Risk Between Individual Football Players: Survival Analysis of Recurrent Events and Non-events.

Concussion tolerance and head impact exposure are highly variable among football players. Recent findings highlight that head impact data analyses need to be performed at the subject level. In this paper, we describe a method of characterizing concussion risk between individuals using a new survival analysis technique developed with real-world head impact data in mind. Our approach addresses the limitations and challenges seen in previous risk analyses of football head impact data. Specifically, this demonstrative analysis appropriately models risk for a combination of left-censored recurrent

Effects of external helmet accessories on biomechanical measures of head injury risk: An ATD study using the HYBRIDIII headform.

Competitive cycling is a popular activity in North America for which injuries to the head account for the majority of hospitalizations and fatalities. In cycling, use of helmet accessories (e.g. cameras) has become widespread. As a consequence, standards organizations and the popular media are discussing the role these accessories could play in altering helmet efficacy and head injury risk. We conducted impacts to a helmeted anthropomorphic headform, with and without camera accessories, at speeds of 4m/s and 6m/s, and measured head accelerations, forces on the head-form skull, and used the Sim

Effect of helmet therapy in the treatment of positional head deformity.

AIM: Most positional head deformities can be treated conservatively with postural correction training or a head orthosis ('helmet'). We aimed to investigate whether infants with helmet therapy have cosmetic improvement in head deformity. METHODS: A total of 376 infants at age 2-40 months who were diagnosed with mild-moderate-severe positional head deformity were enrolled. Among these infants, 101 infants were treated with helmet therapy or postural correction training. After matching by infant's age and time of therapy, three retrospective cohort studies of 56 infants were conducted for infan

Cranial orthosis after cochlear implantation in an infant: Helmet modifications.

We present an infant with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss caused by bacterial meningitis, and moderate/severe plagiocephaly requiring simultaneous treatment of cochlear implantation for hearing loss and cranial orthosis for plagiocephaly. A helmet modification was created, so that the infant was able to be treated for his plagiocephaly while bilateral cochlear implants were in place, bringing attention to serve needs of those patients requiring cochlear implant and cranial orthosis concurrently. While this case was the first time such a modification was required, which was due to the youn

Posterior positional plagiocephaly treated with cranial remodeling orthosis.

PRINCIPLES: Since the recommendation that infants sleep in the supine position, there has been an increase in cases of posterior positional plagiocephaly. Even though this condition is a purely cosmetic problem, if it is severe it may affect the child psychologically. Positioning may help in mild or moderate cases, but more active treatment may be necessary in severe cases. METHODS: A prospective study of 260 children treated by dynamic orthotic cranioplasty for posterior positional plagiocephaly was conducted in Lausanne from 1995 to 2001. Construction of these cranial remodelling helmets is

Outcome analysis of molding helmet therapy using a classification for differentiation between plagiocephaly, brachycephaly and combination of both.

PURPOSE: The incidence of positional head deformation has increased during the last decades. Helmet therapy has been proved to be a reliable method for the treatment of nonsynostotic skull deformities. Until today, a simple classification to differentiate between different head shapes has not been established. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We suggest a classification system to group patients with plagiocephaly, brachycephaly, and a combination of both, using two simple values: cranial vault asymmetry (CVA), and cephalic index (CI). We further analyzed a study population of 1050 children treated with

Accidents and injuries in competitive Enduro motorcyclists: a prospective analysis.

The Erzberg Rodeo Motor Enduro race, was analyzed over three consecutive years to analyze the risk of sustaining an accident, to determine the kind and site of injured body regions and to correlate the incidence of accidents with the site on the race track suspiring that most accidents happen at the first- and the last-third. In this prospective, field study questionnaires were used recoding fallen riders. Demographic data, the third of the race track on which the accident happened and details of the accident itself like its mechanism were noted. Each injured body region was recorded separatel

Clinical and pathological studies of brain injuries in horse-riding accidents: a description of cases and review with a warning to the unhelmeted.

We present a clinical and pathological study of brain injuries in horse-riding accidents. Among six fatal cases, all experienced riders varying in age and sex, two were not wearing helmets and four had inadequate protective headgear. Among five non-fatal cases, four wore adequate helmets and only one of these suffered permanent neurological damage. The fifth was not wearing a helmet and although he eventually returned to work, a CT scan following the fall showed a deep-seated perithalamic hematoma. These findings are consistent with those of virtually all other studies in that they suggest tha

Boxing and mixed martial arts: preliminary traumatic neuromechanical injury risk analyses from laboratory impact dosage data.

OBJECT: In spite of ample literature pointing to rotational and combined impact dosage being key contributors to head and neck injury, boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA) padding is still designed to primarily reduce cranium linear acceleration. The objects of this study were to quantify preliminary linear and rotational head impact dosage for selected boxing and MMA padding in response to hook punches; compute theoretical skull, brain, and neck injury risk metrics; and statistically compare the protective effect of various glove and head padding conditions. METHODS: An instrumented Hybrid II
