The aim of this study was to determine the features and prevalence of primary stabbing headache, primary exertional headache, primary headache associated with sexual activity, and primary cough headache in a Turkish population of headache patients. The data for this study were obtained from 245 patients with headache. Of these patients, 55 fulfilled the International Classification of Headache Disorders (second edition) diagnostic criteria for 'other primary headaches' such as primary stabbing headache (n=31), primary cough headache (n=1), primary exertional headache (n=13), primary headache a

Tension-type headache is the term designated by the International Headache Society to describe what was previously called tension headache, muscle contraction headache, psychomyogenic headache, stress headache, ordinary headache, and psychogenic headache. The International Headache Society defines tension-type headache more precisely, distinguishes between the episodic and the chronic varieties, and divides them into two groups, those associated with a disorder of the pericranial muscles and those not associated with this type of disorder. Most clinic-based studies of tension-type headache suf

Many children present with chronic primary headache (CPH), yet classification within the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) is difficult, potentially impeding treatment pathways. The ICD-11 includes adult criteria, but it lacks coding notes addressing pediatric neurodevelopmental differences, and it stipulates inconsistent time criteria. The current study thus proposes optimized diagnostic criteria for CPH, chronic tension-type headache (TTH), and chronic migraine to better fit the observed symptoms among pediatric patients with CPH. Symptoms of N = 231 pediatric patients presen

Headache diagnosis is based on the criteria of the International Headache Society. Migraine and tension type headache are the most frequent primary headache disorders. Diagnosis can be made based on clinical criteria and further diagnostics are not mandatory. Imaging is primarily needed in suspected case of secondary headache disorders. Distinct imaging methods are used for research purposes especially for research about underlying pathophysiology of headache disorders.

Headache disorders, characterized by recurrent headache, are among the most common disorders of the nervous system. The aim of this study was to document epidemiological and economic burden due to headache globally and in India and suggest a public health approach to address headache disorders for India. We reviewed the available literature on burden due to headache, its management using a primary health care approach and health system barriers, with special emphasis on India. Globally, it has been estimated that prevalence of current headache disorder (symptomatic within last year) among adul

Pseudotumor cerebri syndrome (PTCS) refers to the primary and secondary disorders that cause elevated intracranial pressure without an intracranial mass lesion, ventriculomegaly, or central nervous system infection or malignancy. Headache is the most frequent symptom of PTCS, but there is considerable overlap between the headache features of raised intracranial pressure and the headache features of primary headache disorders. We review headache subtypes that occur in PTCS, non-headache features that help distinguish PTCS from other headache types, changes to the diagnostic criteria for PTCS wi

Chronic Daily Headache is a descriptive term that includes disorders with headaches on more days than not and affects 4% of the general population. The condition has a debilitating effect on individuals and society through direct cost to healthcare and indirectly to the economy in general. To successfully manage chronic daily headache syndromes it is important to exclude secondary causes with comprehensive history and relevant investigations; identify risk factors that predict its development and recognise its sub-types to appropriately manage the condition. Chronic migraine, chronic tension-t

BACKGROUND: The three primary headaches, tension-type headache, migraine and cluster headache, occur in both genders, but all seem to have a sex-specific prevalence. These gender differences suggest that both male and female sex hormones could have an influence on the course of primary headaches. This review aims to summarise the most relevant and recent literature on this topic.
METHODS: Two independent reviewers searched PUBMED in a systematic manner. Search strings were composed using the terms LH, FSH, progesteron*, estrogen*, DHEA*, prolactin, testosterone, androgen*, headach*, migrain*,

Primary headache disorders are worldwide highly prevalent and burdensome and should be therefore considered as a global public health priority. However, too many patients with primary headache disorders still do not receive satisfying care. The most likely identified reasons for such a scenario - lack of public awareness, stigma, lack of trained professionals with inadequate healthcare systems and policies - are remediable. Despite the progresses that were made in headache advocacy, these efforts have not yielded substantial improvements in research funding or access to specialty care and even

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and primary headaches are common pain conditions and often co-exist. TMD classification includes the term 'headache secondary to TMD' but this term does not acknowledge the likelihood that primary headache pathophysiology underpins headache causing painful TMD signs and symptoms in many patients. The two disorders have a complex link and we do not fully understand their interrelationship. However, growing evidence shows a significant association between the two disorders. This article reviews the possible connection between temporomandibular disorders and pri

In the light of the pathophysiologic knowledge acquired in the recent years, a tentative redefinition is now possible of some types of headache until now defined as idiopathic, and indistinctly described as primary headaches. Cluster headache and trigeminal neuralgia are known examples of diseases classified as primary, which are, in contrast, well-defined diseases to be distinguished from headaches without any recognized anatomic site of lesion or pathogenesis. Another still debated condition, chronic migraine, is proposed here as the consequence of "processes" to be ascribed to mechanisms ac

New-Onset Headache in Adults: Evidence-Based Assessment in the Primary Care Setting Abstract. Many people suffer from headaches. Primary (idiopathic) headaches such as migraine and tension type headaches are most common. They may significantly affect occupational and social aspects of daily life, but are usually not dangerous. On the contrary, secondary (symptomatic) headaches may be a symptom for an underlying life-threatening disorder. In these cases, the primary care physician may need to organize certain diagnostic measures such as brain imaging, blood work or lumbar puncture. Sometimes, e

BACKGROUND: Reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS) is characterized by sudden onset thunderclap headache and multiple segmental reversible cerebral vasoconstrictions that improve within 3 months. The postpartum period is a well-known precipitating factor for the onset of RCVS. Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) causes thunderclap headaches in the postpartum period. While headache in CVT is sometimes exacerbated in the supine position, the severity of the headache in RCVS is usually independent of body position. In this study, we report a case of RCVS with thunderclap headache exace

Reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS) and transient global amnesia (TGA) are acute and self-limiting intra-cerebral conditions. Although previously studied as independent phenomena, there are increasing reports of co-occurrence of these two pathologies. We report a 55-year-old male who presented to the hospital with recurrent thunderclap headaches over the course of 1 week with sudden onset of anterograde memory loss. His medications included a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor and intermittent use of pseudoephedrine. On examination he was amnestic to recent events and nota

Headache, a nearly universal experience, remains costly, disabling, and often suboptimally managed. The most common presentations in the United States are migraine, tension-type headache (TTH) and "sinus" headache, but their extensive symptomatic overlap suggests that these conditions can be approached as variations in the same underlying pathology and managed accordingly. We use case studies of patients with varying prior diagnoses (none, migraine, TTH, and sinus headache), as well as a 4-question diagnostic screening tool, to illustrate how pharmacists can use this conceptual framework to si

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of short-term exposure to overall fine particulate matter of <2.5 μm (PM2.5 ) and wildfire-specific PM2.5 with emergency department (ED) visits for headache.
BACKGROUND: Studies have reported associations between PM2.5 exposure and headache risk. As climate change drives longer and more intense wildfire seasons, wildfire PM2.5 may contribute to more frequent headaches.
METHODS: Our study included adult Californian members (aged ≥18 years) of a large de-identified commercial and Medicare Advantage claims database from 2006 to 2020. We identified ED visit

OBJECTIVES/BACKGROUND: This review summarizes current insights into Reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS) diagnosis, management, and outcomes. RCVS is a cerebrovascular disorder characterized by recurrent thunderclap headaches and transient segmental vasoconstriction of cerebral arteries, typically resolving within 3 months.
METHODS: A comprehensive database search was performed across MEDLINE (via PubMed), Embase, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library.
RESULTS: Although often self-limiting, RCVS may cause complications such as subarachnoid hemorrhage, ischemic stroke, and cerebral

INTRODUCTION: Migraine and other types of primary headache are widely prevalent and are thought to have substantial economic implications on a global scale. Nevertheless, the precise prevalence rates in China exhibited discrepancies across various studies. The present study aimed to ascertain the prevalence of migraine and other primary headache disorders in China.
METHODS: A systematic search of peer-reviewed literature was conducted in the Chinese Wanfang, CNKI, PubMed, and MEDLINE databases from January 1988 to December 2023 to identify prevalence data on migraine and other primary headach

BACKGROUND: Anecdotal reports and a single case-control epidemiological survey have suggested an association between the helminthic disease neurocysticercosis and primary headache. The present study was undertaken to determine whether neurocysticercosis is more common among patients with primary headaches than in other neurological disorders.
METHODS: We determined the prevalence of neurocysticercosis in a cohort of patients with primary headache who were seen at our institution over a 20-year period. We used as controls all people from the same cohort with four major different categories of
