Access to specialist palliative care and health care service utilization during the final year of life among patients with kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: Despite the heavy symptom burden and progressive nature of non-malignant kidney diseases, access to palliative care services may be limited. We evaluated access to specialist palliative care (SPC), and its effect on health care utilization among patients with non-malignant and malignant kidney disease during their final year of life. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study examined causes of death among ≥18-year-old individuals in Finland in 2019 using the National Causes of Death Register. Data on access to SPC, emergency department contacts, and hospitalizations were collected

Senior Nurses' Perspectives on Kawa Whakaruruhau and Cultural Safety for Māori Accessing Adult Mental Health Services in Aotearoa-New Zealand.

Māori, the indigenous people of Aotearoa New Zealand have poorer outcomes and experiences when accessing adult mental health services (MHS), including higher rates of seclusion and compulsory treatment. These inequities for Māori represent a breach of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the constitutional foundation of Aotearoa New Zealand, and stem from over a 100 years of European colonisation involving massive confiscation of Māori land, population decline, and suppression of Māori identity and culture. The recent New Zealand mental health Inquiry, He Ara Oranga, emphasised the need to transform the cult

["There are no slots, unless you know someone": perception of access to health services by Congolese women residing in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil].

Data on the health of black women and the presence of this topic in national journals remain scarce, especially considering the frequent use of the primary care network and the Brazilian Unified National Health System (SUS, acronym in Portuguese) by these women. In this article, we take an intersectional perspective on the categories of gender, race, class, and nationality interlinked to the concept of "social capital" to analyze the perceptions of healthcare services by Congolese women residing in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2018. A qualitative study was conducted, consisting of participant ob

This work aims to estimate the phenomenon of violence in the population of the Health Protection Agency (ATS) of Milan using data from emergency room access and hospital admissions. A further goal of the survey is to provide evidence to launch audit processes in

Depression and post-traumatic stress disorder among Haitian immigrant students: implications for access to mental health services and educational programming.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies of Haitian immigrant and refugee youth have emphasized "externalizing" behaviors, such as substance use, high risk sexual behavior, and delinquency, with very little information available on "internalizing" symptoms, such as depression and anxiety. Analyzing stressors and "internalizing" symptoms offers a more balanced picture of the type of social and mental health services that may be needed for this population. The present study aims to: 1) estimate the prevalence of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among Haitian immigrant students; and 2) ex

Surveillance for Health Care Access and Health Services Use, Adults Aged 18-64 Years - Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, United States, 2014.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: As a result of the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, millions of U.S. adults attained health insurance coverage. However, millions of adults remain uninsured or underinsured. Compared with adults without barriers to health care, adults who lack health insurance coverage, have coverage gaps, or skip or delay care because of limited personal finances might face increased risk for poor physical and mental health and premature mortality. PERIOD COVERED: 2014. DESCRIPTION OF SYSTEM: The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is an ongoing, state-based

Feasibility of a randomised controlled trial of Healthier Wealthier Families in Sweden: results from the Ameliorating Child poverty through Connecting Economic Services with child health Services (ACCESS) pilot study.

Despite universal measures in Sweden, the proportion of children living in economic hardship is increasing. One strategy to mitigate hardship is integrating financial counselling within healthcare services. This paper describes a pilot randomised controlled trial (RCT) of the 'Healthier Wealthier Families' model in which child healthcare nurses screen parents of young children for economic hardship and refer those in need to free budget and debt counselling (BDC). The study was an internal pilot of a two-arm randomised waitlist-control trial with a one-to-one allocation. The intervention arm r

'The Addiction Was Making Things Harder for My Mental Health': A Qualitative Exploration of the Views of Adults and Adolescents Accessing a Substance Misuse Treatment Service.

The relationship between substance use and mental health is complex, and both constitute a global public health burden. In the UK, the estimated annual financial costs of alcohol-related harm and illicit drug use are GBP 21.5 billion and GBP 10.7 billion, respectively. This issue is magnified in the North East of England, where treatment access is low and a large proportion of individuals experience socioeconomic deprivation. The present study aimed to explore the experiences of adults and adolescents accessing a substance misuse treatment service in the North East, in order to inform policy m

Sexual and reproductive health services access and provision in Cambodia during the COVID-19 pandemic: a mixed-method study of urban-rural differences.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic pushed governments worldwide to implement unprecedented mitigation measures, including safe-distancing, lockdowns, disruption of non-essential services, border closures and travel restrictions, with both potential to affect rural and urban service-users differently and unintended consequences including reductions in sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. We aimed to explore rural-urban differences in progress and challenges in SRH services provision in Cambodia, particularly during initial months of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We used a mixed-meth
