Sensor-based behavioral patterns can identify heat-sensitive lactating dairy cows.

Heat stress impairs the health and performance of dairy cows, yet only a few studies have investigated the diversity of cattle behavioral responses to heat waves. This research was conducted on an Italian Holstein dairy farm equipped with precision livestock farming sensors to assess potential different behavioral patterns of the animals. Three heat waves, defined as at least five consecutive days with mean daily temperature-humidity index higher than 72, were recorded in the farm area during the summer of 2021. Individual daily milk yield data of 102 cows were used to identify "heat-sensitive

Overexertion and heat stress in the fire service: a new conceptual framework.

From the year 2000, the United States Fire Administration (USFA) has been recording all line-of-duty deaths in the fire service. Stress or overexertion caused 1096 out of 2598 total line-of-duty deaths in the United States from 2000 to 2021. Those deaths due to stress or overexertion were further classified as myocardial infarction (90%), cerebrovascular accident (6.8%), other (2.6%), and heat exhaustion (0.6%). Environmental heat exposure is a concern in firefighting, as firefighters work in extreme conditions, such as high ambient temperatures, while wearing protective clothing. Heat stress

Heat stress on breeding value prediction for milk yield and composition of a Brazilian Holstein cattle population.

Due to the high milk production of Holstein cows, many countries have chosen to import semen to improve local dairy herds. This strategy would be more effective if this semen was used in the same environment conditions in which the bulls were selected. If the effect of genotype by environment (G × E) interaction is not considered, the estimated breeding values (EBVs) may vary, potentially reducing the selection response. We evaluate the impact of heat stress on selection for milk yield and composition of Holstein cows using random regression models. To verify the interference of heat stress in

Heat stress morbidity among US military personnel: Daily exposure and lagged response (1998-2019).

Heat stress illnesses represent a rising public health threat; however, associations between environmental heat and observed adverse health outcomes across populations and geographies remain insufficiently elucidated to evaluate risk and develop prevention strategies. In particular, military-relevant large-scale studies of daily heat stress morbidity responses among physically active, working-age adults to various indices of heat have been limited. We evaluated daily means, maximums, minimums, and early morning measures of temperature, heat index, and wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) indices,

SELENOS Is Associated with Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress Activation in Selenium Deficiency-Induced Nutritional Muscular Dystrophy in Chicks Exposed to Heat Stress.

BACKGROUND: Broiler chickens are fast-growing and highly susceptible to dietary selenium (Se) deficiency, with environmental stressors like heat stress further intensifying their vulnerability. OBJECTIVES: Here, we investigated the mechanisms underlying Se deficiency-induced nutritional muscular dystrophy (NMD) in broilers under heat stress. METHODS: One-day-old male Cobb broilers (n = 6 cages/diet, 6 broilers/cage) were fed a Se-deficient diet (Se-Def, 47 μg Se/kg) or a Se-Def diet supplemented with 0.3 mg Se/kg Na2SeO3 for 6 wk. RESULTS: Compared with the control, Se-Def induced NMD in th

Unraveling the cytoprotective mechanism of polysaccharides in heat-stressed rabbits: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, physiological status, and molecular docking assessment.

Heat stress (HS) is a critical environmental challenge that compromises immune function and triggers systemic inflammation in livestock. This study evaluates the efficacy of Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharides (GAP) in mitigating HS-induced damage in growing rabbits. Using a dual in vivo and in silico approaches, this work investigated the regulatory protective role of GAP on physio-metabolic markers, antioxidant capacity, and the modulation of immune and inflammatory pathways. A total of 120 healthy New Zealand White weaned rabbits were randomly assigned to four experimental groups. Over a 56-d

Duzhong Butiansu Prescription Improves Heat Stress-Induced Spermatogenic Dysfunction by Regulating Sperm Formation and Heat Stress Pathway.

BACKGROUND: Duzhong Butiansu (DZBTS) prescription contains many traditional Chinese medicines and has been shown to have a curative effect on male fertility. However, the efficacy and mechanism of DZBTS in the treatment of male infertility induced by heat stress have not been reported. The aim of the present study is to elucidate the effect and mechanism of DZBTS on spermatogenic function of a heat stress model in rats. METHODS: Male Wistar rats (280-320 g) were given different doses of DZBTS (0.4853 g/kg/d or 0.9707 g/kg/d), Shengjing capsule (0.56 g/kg/d), or double distilled water for 15 d

Electrophoretic and immunocytochemical analysis of Hsp72 and Hsp73 expression in heat-stressed mouse testis and epididymis.

OBJECTIVE: One of the most profound events in stressed cells is the synthesis of a highly conserved family of proteins, the 'heat shock proteins' (Hsp). The Hsp70 family is the most diverse, and includes constitutive as well as stress-inducible proteins with overlapping or unique functions in different cell compartments. Elucidation of Hsp70 expression during different stages of spermatogenesis and maturation of germ cells is of particular interest due to their high sensitivity to heat treatment. STUDY DESIGN: Expression of the main isoforms of the Hsp70 family (constitutive Hsp73 and stress-

Heat Exposure Definitions in Temperature-Mortality Studies: Towards a Harmonisation Framework.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: We reviewed how heat exposure is defined using thresholds and reference temperatures derived from the temperature-mortality exposure-response curve in time-series and case-crossover studies using distributed lag non-linear models and propose a harmonisation framework relevant to climate change research and heat disaster preparedness. RECENT FINDINGS: The rapid review identified variation across studies in heat thresholds and reference temperatures, affecting the comparability of estimates. A case study in Spain illustrates how the minimum mortality temperature (MMT) app

Climate Change and Diabetes Outcomes: Evidence from Climate-Vulnerable Regions.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Climate change is progressively recognized as an emerging determinant of metabolic health outcomes, particularly in relation to diabetes mellitus. This review summarizes mechanistic and epidemiological evidence linking climate-related exposures to diabetes outcomes: namely, 1) heat stress, 2) air pollution, and 3) extreme weather-related disruption of diabetes care. RECENT FINDINGS: Warming temperatures, worsening air quality, and more frequent extreme weather events are intensifying exposures that disproportionately affect populations with pre-existing chronic diseases; pa

Exertional Heat Illness in Active Populations.

AbstractExertional heat illness (EHI) is a leading yet preventable cause of morbidity and mortality in active populations. EHI develops when the body's integrated thermoregulatory responses, including cardiovascular adjustments and evaporative cooling, are unable to dissipate the combined burden of metabolic heat production, environmental heat stress, clothing or protective equipment, and other contributing factors. This review examines the physiological mechanisms that underlie EHI and the effects of heat stress on the exercising heart. We also summarize best practices for the prevention, rec

Air temperature versus thermal indices (UTCI and PET) across Türkiye: reanalysis evidence that thermal comfort and heat stress cannot be inferred from air temperature alone.

Air temperature (Ta) remains the most widely communicated measure of heat, yet human heat stress also depends on air humidity, wind conditions and radiation fluxes. We quantified the difference between Ta and two human-biometeorological indices, the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) and the Physiologically Equivalent Temperature (PET), across Türkiye using hourly May-September reanalysis data for 1950-2024. ERA5-Land supplied Ta, humidity, wind and pressure at ~ 0.1° resolution, while mean radiant temperature (MRT) was taken from the Copernicus thermal-comfort dataset derived from ERA5 (E

Impact of tent shade on heat exposures and simulated heat strain for people experiencing homelessness.

Concurrent increases in homelessness and heat intensity, duration, and frequency translate to an urban heat risk trap for the unsheltered population. Homelessness is both a driver and consequence of poor health, co-creating distinct geographies with various risk factors that exacerbate heat vulnerability. We tested the efficacy of different tent shadings over identical tents often observed in the Phoenix area (white bedsheet, mylar, tarp, and aluminum foil) and compared them to a control tent (uncovered) and ambient conditions. We monitored all meteorological variables at all six locations, no

Comparison of Transcriptomic Changes in Survivors of Exertional Heat Illness with Malignant Hyperthermia Susceptible Patients.

Exertional heat illness (EHI) is an occupational health hazard for athletes and military personnel-characterised by the inability to thermoregulate during exercise. The ability to thermoregulate can be studied using a standardised heat tolerance test (HTT) developed by The Institute of Naval Medicine. In this study, we investigated whole blood gene expression (at baseline, 2 h post-HTT and 24 h post-HTT) in male subjects with either a history of EHI or known susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia (MHS): a pharmacogenetic condition with similar clinical phenotype. Compared to healthy controls

Cultural Factors, Migrant Status, and Vulnerability to Increasing Temperatures among Hispanic/Latino Farmworkers: A Systematic Review.

HIGHLIGHTS: Cultural factors and acculturative stressors affect the health and safety behaviors of Hispanic/Latino farmworkers. Cultural factors and stressors also increase their risk of heat-related illnesses (HRIs). Interventions targeting HRIs in this population should account for cultural factors. ABSTRACT: Hispanic/Latino farmworkers have been widely recognized as a particularly vulnerable population in the U.S., with among the lowest levels of income and education in the country. Existing research has identified and explored factors, including cultural and demographic characteristics, t

[The effect of a water-cooled vest on heat intolerance in a patient with anhidrosis due to familial amyloidosis of Finnish type].

The patient was a 70-year-old male with familial amyloidosis of Finnish type who complained of heat intolerance due to anhidrosis during outdoor activities in summer. A water-cooled TM-2 vest was tried for this patient to reduce his body heat during exercises. Following the morning activities including jogging in August his body temperature rose up to 38.0 degrees C without wearing the partly frozen vest. However, when he wore it, his temperature rose up to only 37.2 degrees C after the exercises, which was 0.8 degree C lower than when he did not wear the vest. Headache and tachycardia during

The Role of Extracellular Heat Shock Proteins in Cardiovascular Diseases.

In the early 1960s, heat shock proteins (HSPs) were first identified as vital intracellular proteinaceous components that help in stress physiology and reprogram the cellular responses to enable the organism's survival. By the early 1990s, HSPs were detected in extracellular spaces and found to activate gamma-delta T-lymphocytes. Subsequent investigations identified their association with varied disease conditions, including autoimmune disorders, diabetes, cancer, hepatic, pancreatic, and renal disorders, and cachexia. In cardiology, extracellular HSPs play a definite, but still unclear, role

Remodeling of Gut Microbiota by Probiotics Alleviated Heat Stroke-Induced Necroptosis in Male Germ Cells.

SCOPE: Systemic heat stress (or heatstroke; HS) induces germ cell death and spermatogenesis disorders in men and male mammals. Also, it affects the immune environment of the circulatory system promoting gut inflammation and intestinal permeability, leading to pathogenic infection. In this study, the crosstalk between the gut and testis (gut-testis axis) under HS is explored, by examining the effects of intestinal immune status on the health of the male reproductive system in mice. METHODS AND RESULTS: A mouse model of systemic heat stress is established to investigate the effect of probiotics
