Control of soil-transmitted helminthiasis in Myanmar: results of 7 years of deworming.

After a baseline survey in 2003 which showed an overall parasitological prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths of 69.7% in school children (prevalence of ascariasis 48.5%, prevalence of trichuriasis 57.5% and prevalence of hookworm infection 6.5), a national deworming programme was established. After 7 years of implementation, it had resulted in a significant reduction of STH prevalence (prevalence of any STH 21%, prevalence of ascariasis 5.8%, prevalence of trichuriasis 18.6% and prevalence of hookworm infection 0.3%) as well as a reduction of the infections of moderate-heavy intensity from

Soil-transmitted Helminthiasis in the United States: a systematic review--1940-2010.

The epidemiology of soil-transmitted helminth infections (hookworm, Trichuris trichiura, Ascaris lumbricoides, and Strongyloides stercoralis) in the United States is poorly understood. To gain understanding of the status of disease, a systematic review was performed to assess the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminth infections in the United States. Of all studies reviewed, 14 were designated as high-quality. High-quality studies were published from 1942 to 1982 and showed that infection was prevalent throughout the southern United States and Appalachia as recently as 1982, finding that hook

Intestinal helminthiasis in children of gurez valley of jammu and kashmir state, India.

INTRODUCTION: This paper is a part of the helminthological studies carried out on school-going children of the Kashmir Valley and deals with the status of intestinal helminths in the children of Gurez Valley and to assess epidemiological factors associated with the extent of endemic disease so that control measures are adopted. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Stool samples were collected from 352 children from Gurez Valley. The samples were processed using Kato-Katz thick smear technique, and microscopically examined for intestinal parasites. RESULTS: Of the 352 children surveyed, 75.28% had one or mo

Malaria and intestinal helminthiasis in school children of Kumba Urban Area, Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Malaria and intestinal helminthiasis are parasitic diseases causing high morbidity and mortality in most tropical parts of the world, where climatic conditions and sanitation practices favour their prevalence. These infections do co-exist and have different effects on infected individuals. OBJECTIVES: To assess the level of endemicity of malaria and helminth infections in school children of the Kumba Urban Area of Cameroon, and to determine how these infections relate to each other. DESIGN: Cross sectional study. SETTING: Four primary schools in the Kumba urban area. SUBJECTS:

[Transmission of schistosomiasis in an urban population and prevalence of intestinal helminthiasis in Bamako, Mali ].

Parasitological, malacological and anthropological studies were performed to assess the prevalence of Schistosoma haematobium and S. mansoni in schoolchildren living in the suburban area of Bamako. A total of 1017 schoolchildren aged 6-14 years were selected in two different areas between September 1997 and December 1999. In Djikoroni, the prevalence of S. haematobium and S. mansoni was 80.7% (339/420) and 22.8% (85/372) respectively. There was no significant difference of prevalence and intensity of infection with S. haematobium between schools, gender and age (p > 0.05), whereas, those of S.

Epidemiological study of intestinal helminthiasis in a Marrakech raw sewage spreading zone.

It has been suspected for some time that raw sewage is a potential source of protozoan and helminthic infections (10). Shuval et al. (16, 17) and W.H.O. (21) have shown that irrigating crops with untreated wastewater causes significant intestinal infections in both consumers and farm workers. This study compared the stools of "sewage farming" children exposed to raw sewage (El Azzouzia area) and those of a control group. Stool specimens from 253 exposed children and 275 controls were analyzed. 73% of the exposed were infected with one or more helminths verses 30% of the control group. The main

The relation between serum fatty acids and soil-transmitted helminthiasis in the Philippines.

The purpose of this study was observe the effects of soil-transmitted helminthiasis on the amounts of fatty acids in the serum. The subjects were 32 females with age ranging from 15 to 55 years old (22.6 +/- 12.0). The intensity of infection was light based on the criteria of the WHO Expert Committee. Seven fatty acids and serum cholesterol were determined, with the pentadecanoic acid (C15: 0) as internal standard. Serum fatty acid levels were correlated with age-group, dietary habit and body mass index. These factors were however not related with the levels of the serum fatty acids. But the a

Soil-transmitted helminthiasis and undernutrition among schoolchildren in Mettu town, Southwest Ethiopia.

Soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STHs) and undernutrition are common health problems in developing countries. Several reports showed that STH and undernutrition are often associated. The main aim of this study was to determine the association of STH and undernutrition among schoolchildren in Mettu town, Southwest Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study design was employed. To collect socio-demographic data, semi-structured questionnaire and physical observation were used. Kato-Katz technique and Anthropometric measurements were also considered to see STH infection and determine the nutritional status

Stunting as a Risk Factor of Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis in Children: A Literature Review.

As a high-burden neglected tropical disease, soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections remain a major problem in the world, especially among children under five years of age. Since young children are at high risk of being infected, STH infection can have a long-term negative impact on their life, including impaired growth and development. Stunting, a form of malnutrition in young children, has been long assumed as one of the risk factors in acquiring the STH infections. However, the studies on STH infection in children under five with stunting have been lacking, resulting in poor identificati

[Intestinal helminthiasis in school background in six towns of southwestern Côte d'Ivoire].

A coproparasitological investigation was conducted in six towns located in the humid dense forest area of South West Côte d'Ivoire in order to determine the prevalence of intestinal helminthosis. During this study faeces of 2220 school children aged from 4 to 15 years old were analysed by four coprological techniques: direct analysis, Kato, Baermann and Graham methods. The overall prevalence rate of intestinal helminthosis in school children in the area is 37.9%. Male subjects are more infested than females. The more frequent parasite species were: hookworm (17%), Ascaris lumbricoides (10.8%),

Mass treatment for intestinal helminthiasis control in an Amazonian endemic area in Brazil.

The objective of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminthiasis and evaluate the sanitary conditions and the role of a mass treatment campaign for control of these infections in Santa Isabel do Rio Negro. A cross-sectional survey was carried out in 2002, to obtain data related to the sanitary conditions of the population and fecal samples for parasitological examination in 308 individuals, followed by a mass treatment with albendazole or mebendazole with coverage of 83% of the city population in 2003. A new survey was carried out in 2004, involving 214 indiv

Progress towards countrywide control of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis in Uganda.

Schistosomiasis caused by infection with Schistosoma mansoni is a serious public health burden in 38 of the 56 districts of Uganda. This article reviews the initial experience of the national control programme. Launched in 2003, this started with a pilot phase with the main aim of utilizing the experience to formulate feasible and appropriate methods of drug delivery. Overall, 432,746 people were treated and coverage was 91.4% in schools and 64.7% in communities. The issues raised by independent evaluators included that most communities did not participate in the selection of community drug di
