Helminth therapy (worms) for allergic rhinitis.

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis is a disorder of the nasal membranes and surrounding tissues, and a worldwide cause of illness and disability. Helminths are complex tissue-dwelling or lumen-dwelling organisms that inhabit larger organisms and are frequently asymptomatic. Helminths modulate the natural immune responses of their human hosts, and may prevent or cure immune-mediated or allergic diseases (e.g. allergic rhinitis) in the host. Non-randomised studies support this hypothesis. OBJECTIVES: To assess the safety and effectiveness of helminth therapy in people with allergic rhinitis. SEARCH…

Interactions between helminth parasites and allergy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the findings of recent human studies of the association between helminth parasite infections and allergy and di … modulate the host inflammatory response directed against the parasite, a causal association between helminths and atopic diseases remains uncertain.

Helminth genomics: The implications for human health.

More than two billion people (one-third of humanity) are infected with parasitic roundworms or flatworms, collectively known as helminth parasites. These infections cause diseases that are responsible for enormous levels of morbidity and mortality, delays in the physical development of children, loss of productivity among the workforce, and maintenance of poverty. Genomes of the major helminth species that affect humans, and many others of agricultural and veterinary significance, are now the subject of intensive genome sequencing and annotation. Draft genome sequences of the filarial worm Bru

Genetics of susceptibility to human helminth infection.

Recent studies have shown that host genetics is an important determinant of the intensity of infection and morbidity due to human helminths. Epidemiological studies of a number of parasite species have shown that the intensity of infection (worm burden) is a heritable phenotype. The proportion of variance in human worm burden explained by genetic effects varies from 0.21 to 0.44. Human genome scans have identified a locus responsible for controlling Schistosoma mansoni infection intensity on chromosome 5q31-q33, and loci controlling Ascaris lumbricoides intensity on chromosomes 1 and 13, altho…

Intestinal helminthic infections in schoolchildren in Cambodia.

During the period January to December 1998, the National Malaria Center (CNM) carried out a parasitological survey of schoolchildren in rural and semi-urban areas, to assess intestinal helminthic infections in schoolchildren in the central parts of Cambodia. In the rural areas, there were four schools in Stung Treng Province (all situated along the Mekong River), five schools in Kratie Province (around rubber plantations), six schools in Kampong Chhnang Province (along Tonle Sap Lake); and in the semi-urban areas, three schools in Beng Tumpon Commune and five schools in Chbar Ampeou Commune (M

Helminth parasites, a major factor in malnutrition.

The author discusses the significance of helminth and schistosome infections in exacerbating nutritional problems in many countries, and advocates population-wide treatment where there is clear evidence that this would yield substantial gains in the quality of life.

Immunodiagnostic tests for protozoan and helminthic infections.

Immunodiagnostic tests for human protozoan and helminthic infections are reviewed. The need for immunodiagnostic tests varies with each infection but is of paramount importance in those infections that cannot be parasitologically diagnosed readily such as toxoplasmosis, pneumocystosis, Chagas' disease, trichinosis, hydatidosis, cysticercosis, and visceral larva migrans. Immunoassays are also needed for those worldwide highly prevalent infections with severe morbidity to be used in seroepidemiology and in the follow-up evaluation of control programs. The most important are malaria, schistosomia

An economic appraisal of helminth parasites in sheep.

The economic effects of the common helminth parasites of sheep are described and the current methods of prophylaxis adopted by sheep farmers in the United Kingdom reviewed. More efficient prophylactic programmes are outlined and the economic benefit accruing from two programmes designed to control fascioliasis and parasitic gastroenteritis are presented in detail.

[Study On The Status Of Helminthic Infections In Koreans].

This study was undertaken to evaluate the present status of intestinal helminthic infections in Koreans, from April 1967 through May 1969. The nationwidely collected stool specimens and scotch-tape anal swabs from primary schoolchildren, middle school students, draftees to army recruitment camp, soldiers and inhabitants of various parts of Korea were examined. The methods employed were Kato's cellophane thick smear technique and formalin-ether sedimentation technique in 40,581 for the prevalence rate of various intestinal helminths, scotch-tape anal swab technique in 8,585 for the prevalence r…
