[Transdermal salicylate absorption following epidermal application of an analgesic / antiphlogistic ointment and gel formulation (author's transl)].

Following epidermal application of 5 g Dolo-Arthrosenex ointment for gel, respectively, containing 625 mg ethyleneglycol salicylate (corresponding to 473.9 mg salicylic acid) upon a skin area of 100 cm2 of 12 normal volunteers transdermal absorption of salicylate was measured over a period of 48 h after application by means of renal salicylate excretion. A high-pressure liquid chromatography method was employed for the quantitative estimation of urinary levels of salicylic acid and salicyluric acid. Afer application of the ointment in the mean 26.7% of the applied salicylate dose is resorbed w

[Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) a bloodtest for diagnosis of sarcoidosis (author's transl)].

Serum angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) was studied in 50 patients with sarcoidosis (39 active, 11 inactive) as well as in 50 control patients (34 with chronic nonspecific lung disease, 9 with Hodgkin and 7 with rheumatoid arthritis). There was a significant difference of ACE activity between sarcoidosis patients (28.6 +/- 11.4) and controls (14.8 +/- 4), and also between active (32.8 +/- 11) and the inactive (21.9 +/- 5.1) sarcoidosis (p less than 0.001). Coricosteroid treatment seems to lower ACE activity in patients with sarcoidosis without offering a clue for clinical improvement. Increa

Redox Potential Correlates with Changes in Metabolite Concentrations Attributable to Pathways Active in Oxidative Stress Response in Swine Traumatic Shock.

INTRODUCTION: Oxidation-reduction (redox) reactions, and the redox potential (RP) that must be maintained for proper cell function, lie at the heart of physiologic processes in critical illness. Imbalance in RP reflects systemic oxidative stress, and whole blood RP measures have been shown to correlate with oxygen debt level over time in swine traumatic shock. We hypothesize that RP measures reflect changing concentrations of metabolites involved in oxidative stress. To test this hypothesis, we compared blood and urine RP with concentrations of multiple metabolites in a swine traumatic shock m

Residues of salicylic acid and its metabolites in hen plasma, tissues and eggs as a result of animal treatment and consumption of naturally occurring salicylates.

Salicylates are among the most known anti-inflammatory drugs, used both in human and veterinary medicine. They also occur naturally in plants. Residues of salicylic acid in tissues and eggs may occur after drug administration or exposure of animals to feed material with high salicylate content. An animal study was performed on laying hens. The birds received sodium salicylate or acetylsalicylic acid (10 mg/kg b.w.) for 7 days or were given corn containing 1.18 mg/kg of salicylic acid. Samples of liver, muscle and plasma were collected at 0, 4, 8, 24 and 72 h after treatment; eggs were collecte

Potentiometric and spectroscopic studies on the dimethyltin(IV) complexes of 2-hydroxyhippuric acid.

Equilibrium and spectroscopic (1H, 13C NMR and 119Sn Mössbauer) studies in aqueous solution are reported for dimethyltin(IV) complexes of 2-hydroxyhippuric acid (Sal-Gly). Below pH 4, oxygen-coordinated complexes MLH and ML are formed. In the pH range 5-8.5, the species MLH(-1), predominates at any metal-to-ligand ratio. The ligand exchange of this species is slow on the NMR time scale, which allows its structural characterization by NMR spectroscopy: the coordination polyhedron around the tin atom is distorted trigonal bipyramidal, with tridentate [O-,N-,COO-] coordination of Sal-Gly, involvi

Direct analysis of salicylic acid, salicyl acyl glucuronide, salicyluric acid and gentisic acid in human plasma and urine by high-performance liquid chromatography.

A method for the simultaneous direct determination of salicylate (SA), its labile, reactive metabolite, salicyl acyl glucuronide (SAG), and two other major metabolites, salicyluric acid and gentisic acid in plasma and urine is described. Isocratic reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) employed a 15-cm C18 column using methanol-acetonitrile-25 mM acetic acid as the mobile phase, resulting in HPLC analysis time of less than 20 min. Ultraviolet detection at 310 nm permitted analysis of SAG in plasma, but did not provide sensitivity for measurement of salicyl phenol glucuron

Effect of exercise and heat exposure on percutaneous absorption of methyl salicylate.

The effects of exercise, heat exposure or both on the percutaneous absorption of methyl salicylate were studied in 6 healthy volunteers. Exercise was performed to 30% of VO2max, 45 min each hour for 6 h, at ambient temperatures of 22 degrees C or 40 degrees C. Systemic availability was assessed by measurement of plasma salicylate concentrations and cumulative urinary salicyluric acid excretion over an 8-h collection period. The absorption of methyl salicylate was increased to more than 3-times above control in subjects exercising in the heat. It is concluded that exercise and heat exposure, by

Effect of colonic fermentation of uvaia (Eugenia pyriformis Cambess) fractions on phenolic compounds and gut microbiota composition: An in vitro study using the Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem (SHIME®).

This study evaluated the effect of colonic fermentation of uvaia seed and uvaia pulp on the phenolic compounds produced in the lumen and on the gut microbiota composition. Fermentation of uvaia pulp increased epigallocatechin, hippuric acid, ellagic acid, epicatechin gallate, and procyanidins in proximal colon (PC). The microbiota action on uvaia seed decreased hesperetin and quercetin in descending colon (DC). Fecal fermentation of uvaia pulp fraction showed the highest production of acetate (1469.82-5860.10 mg/L), propionate (543.72-3039.37 mg/L), and butyrate (8.58-2225 mg/L). Firmicutes de

Non-antibiotic treatments for the management of recurrent urinary tract infection in the multidrug resistance era: A narrative review.

Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a significant global health burden, increasingly complicated by antibiotic resistance. Traditional approaches with antibiotics increase the risk of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains, emphasizing the need for new non-antibiotic treatments. Several promising approaches have emerged during the last decade. Microbiome-based therapies, including probiotics, asymptomatic bacteriuria strains, and fecal microbiota transplantation, aim to restore microbial balance. Immunomodulation, through cytokine targeting and bacterial vaccines, shows potential for boos

Urinary biomarkers of preeclampsia: An update.

Preeclampsia (PE), a pregnancy-related syndrome, has motivated extensive research to understand its pathophysiology and develop early diagnostic methods. 'Omic' technologies, focusing on genes, mRNA, proteins, and metabolites, have revolutionized biological system studies. Urine emerges as an ideal non-invasive specimen for omics analysis, offering accessibility, easy collection, and stability, making it valuable for identifying biomarkers. A comprehensive exploration of urinary omics in preeclampsia is discussed in this review. Proteomic studies identified biomarkers such as SERPINA-1 and uro

Acute organic solvent toxic encephalopathy: A case report and literature review.

Organic solvents are a class of volatile, lipophilic substances that can easily enter the human body through skin and mucous membrane contact as well as air inhalation, and can lead to toxic encephalopathy (TE), especially after entering the lipid-rich nervous system. The present case reports a patient with acute organic solvent toxic encephalopathy (AOSTE), which may have been caused by occasional ink leakage from Xuzhou (Jiangsu, China). By summarizing the history the patient to exposure to organic solvents, clinical manifestations, radiology findings and relevant laboratory tests, we hypoth

Systems metabolic effects of a necator americanus infection in Syrian hamster.

Hookworms (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus) are blood-feeding intestinal nematodes that infect approximately 700 million people worldwide. To further our understanding of the systems metabolic response of the mammalian host to hookworm infection, we employed a metabolic profiling strategy involving the combination of (1)H NMR spectroscopic analysis of urine and serum and multivariate data analysis techniques to investigate the biochemical consequences of a N. americanus infection in the hamster. The infection was characterized by altered energy metabolism, consistent with hookworm

Evaluation of DNA damage by the Comet assay in shoe workers exposed to toluene and other organic solvents.

The alkaline single-cell gel electrophoresis (or Comet) assay was applied to evaluate DNA damage in cryopreserved peripheral blood mononuclear leukocytes from 34 female shoe workers exposed to organic solvents and a group of 19 non-exposed women. We also investigated whether the polymorphisms of glutathione S-transferase M1 (GSTM1) and T1 (GSTT1) genes affect individual level of DNA damage possibly induced by the solvent exposure. Chemical measurements of workplace air in the two factories studied showed that the workers were exposed to acetone, gasoline, and toluene in both factories and to e

Identification and characterization of Serpulina pilosicoli isolates recovered from the blood of critically ill patients.

The phenotypic and genetic characteristics of spirochetes isolated from the blood of one U.S. and six French patients with severe clinical disease or impaired immunity were examined. All spirochetes were anaerobic, weakly beta-hemolytic, positive for hippurate hydrolysis, and negative for beta-glucosidase activity. Cell lengths ranged from 4 to 8 microm, and each isolate had between 8 and 12 periplasmic flagella per cell. These features were consistent with the spirochetes' being Serpulina pilosicoli, the agent of intestinal spirochetosis. All isolates were positive in a PCR assay amplifying a
