BACKGROUND: Cryptococcus neoformans is an opportunistic fungus with marked neurotropism, classically affecting immunocompromised patients, even though occasionally reported in immunocompetent hosts. Skull involvement is exceptionally rare and may radiologically mimic malignant tumors, causing diagnostic delays.

Histiocytic sarcoma, proliferation arising from immunoregulatory effector system cells, is a very rare and recently recognized tumor. Diagnosis is based on immunohistochemical and molecular genetic study, which allows to distinguish histiocytic sarcoma from lymphocytic proliferation, such as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. We report the case of a gastric interdigitating reticulum cell sarcoma, treated by resection and chemotherapy. We review here clinical, histological, immunohistochemical and genotypic features of histiocytic tumors of the digestive tract.

A 63-year-old man had epithelioid sarcoma. Light microscopy showed the tumor to resemble granuloma annulare. Enzymatic histocytochemical and ultrastructural studies demonstrated the tumor's histiocytic features. Literature review of epithelioid sarcoma and granuloma annulare showed them to have a similar anatomic distribution.
