The effects of acute morphine on the release of dopamine (DA) in the striatum and limbic forebrain of rats upon 48 h withdrawal from 20-day morphine treatment were studied using 3-methoxytyramine (3-MT) in tissue as an index of DA release. Homovanillic acid (HVA) and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) were also measured. The chronic morphine treatment did not alter the concentrations of DA metabolites. We measured cholinesterase (ChE) activity and monoamine metabolite levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 22 patients with early-onset Alzheimer type dementia (Alzheimer's disease; AD) and of 32 controls. Regional cerebral metabolic rate for glucose (rCMRglu) and cerebrospinal fluid monoamine metabolites were measured in two cases of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) with different clinical courses. A marked decrease in rCMRglu was found in the cortical gray matter of a patient with rapidly developing SSPE (3.6-4.2 mg/100 g brain tissue/min).
