INTRODUCTION: Gestational Trophoblastic Disease (GTD) is a term used for a group of pregnancy-related tumours. These consist of various tumours and tumour like lesions characterized by proliferation of trophoblastic tissue. Amongst GTD, hydatidiform moles are the most common form. These lesions sometimes may develop into invasive moles, or, in rare cases, into choriocarcinoma.
AIM: To study the clinicopathologic characteristics and prevalence of different forms of gestational trophoblastic disease in a tertiary care hospital.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was descriptive, observat

An epidemiological study with the aim of establishing the incidence of hydatidiform mole, persistent trophoblastic disease and choriocarcinoma in Stockholm County was performed. Based on the regional cancer registry and hospital registers, the incidence for 1975-1988 was calculated for the number of deliveries as well as the total number of pregnancies. Of the molar pregnancies, 6% were treated with chemotherapy because of invasive mole or choriocarcinoma. Non-molar choriocarcinoma occurred in 1/33,717 deliveries. Difficulties in assessing the incidence of gestational trophoblastic disease are

Invasive mole belongs to gestational trophoblastic neoplasm, which is a highly curable group of pregnancy-related tumors. However, approximately 20% of gestational trophoblastic tumors will be resistant to or relapsed after initial chemotherapy. These resistant and relapsed lesions will require salvage chemotherapy with or without surgery. It is still unclear which regimens are the most effective and least toxic. Here, we report a case of unilateral hydronephrosis presenting 1 week after a history of curettage because of a hydatidiform mole. With the combination treatments of chemotherapy and

We report the use of dynamic CT for the evaluation of trophoblastic disease of the uterus. In five cases showing evidence of persistent trophoblastic disease after evacuation of a molar gestation, contrast enhancement of the myometrium demonstrated several hypodense foci surrounded by highly enhanced areas. These observations were not found in two cases of successfully evacuated hydatidiform mole without sequela. A case of choriocarcinoma showed a large central nonenhanced lesion with peripheral contrast enhancement. Filling defects in a markedly contrast enhanced lesion probably represent hyd

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical characteristics, management and prognosis of gestational trophoblastic disease in women aged 50 years or more.
METHODS: Thirty-eight cases of gestational trophoblastic disease in women aged 50 years or more, who were treated in Peking Union Medical College Hospital between 1992 and 2002, were reviewed retrospectively.
RESULTS: The median age was 52 years (range from 50 to 58 years). The lesions included 5 hydatidiform moles (13%), 19 invasive moles (50%), 12 choriocarcinomas (32%) and 2 placenta site trophoblastic tumors (5%). All of 38 cases presented

Hydatidiform mole (HM) is the most common form of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia and is characterized by atypical hyperplastic trophoblasts and hydropic villi. Recurrence of HM is extremely rare. Here, we report the case of a patient with three consecutive partial HMs without normal pregnancy. A 28-year-old woman with gravida 3, para 0, was referred to our hospital with a diagnosis of an invasive mole in December 2003. She had three consecutive molar pregnancies in 2000, 2001, and 2003. All three molar pregnancies were evacuated by suction curettage and the patient was followed by serial

Gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) is a group of benign and malignant tumors that develop from placental tissue and includes hydatidiform moles and gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN). Invasive molar disease and choriocarcinoma are rare forms of GTN and can arise from any pregnancy event. An interstitial ectopic pregnancy occurs with implantation within the intramural portion of the fallopian tube covered by myometrium. We present two cases of an invasive mole with pathology consistent with choriocarcinoma in situ arising from an interstitial ectopic pregnancies. We review managemen

BACKGROUND: Intrapartum rupture of the uterus in a primiparous patient is an exceedingly rare event. This case report describes uterine rupture in a woman with previous invasive hydatidiform mole.
CASE: A 27-year-old primiparous woman with a history of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia treated successfully with chemotherapy experienced intrapartum uterine rupture with subsequent neonatal death. Magnetic resonance imaging of the uterus had shown evidence of myometrial invasion by the mole. Weakening of the uterine wall secondary to myometrial destruction is believed to have caused the uterin

INTRODUCTION: Gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) developing after molar pregnancy is highly responsive to treatment when diagnosed early. However, delayed recognition, particularly following a partial hydatidiform mole, may lead to advanced disease with life-threatening hemorrhagic complications.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 47-year-old multiparous woman underwent uterine evacuation at an outside hospital on December 2, 2025, where histopathological examination was reported as a partial hydatidiform mole. No serial quantitative serum β-hCG monitoring was performed after evacuation. She subseque

OBJECTIVE: Choriocarcinoma is the most common epithelial cancer among gestational trophoblastic diseases (GTDs); the mechanism of trophoblastic carcinogenesis is unknown. This study aimed to examine the expression of NF-κB family proteins in GTDs and placental tissues as well as the roles of c-Rel in choriocarcinoma.
METHODS: We examined the expression of NF-κB family proteins in normal placenta and hydatidiform mole tissues as well as extravillous trophoblast (EVT) and choriocarcinoma cell lines by Western blot and immunohistochemistry. Immunoprecipitation was performed to determine which pr

Using an immunoradiometric assay, serum CA125 levels were measured in 13 women with a normal pregnancy, 9 with a spontaneous abortion, 3 with a hydatidiform mole, and 15 with a tubal pregnancy. Serum CA125 levels were high in patients with a normal pregnancy (154 +/- 169 U/ml; mean +/- S.D.), a spontaneous abortion (244 +/- 258 U/ml), or a hydatidiform mole (54 +/- 16 U/ml). In contrast, CA125 levels in patients with a tubal pregnancy (33 +/- 25 U/ml) were low, and almost all of those without uterine bleeding (25 +/- 9 U/ml) were within the normal range for non-pregnant women (< 35 U/ml). The

Gestational trophoblastic disease comprises hydatidiform mole (HM) (complete or partial) and gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN). Complete and partial moles have different karyotypes, gross and microscopic histopathology, clinical presentation, prognosis, and chances of progress to GTN. Ultrasonography (USG) and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) quantification are commonly used to diagnose molar pregnancy and further follow-up until resolution. Our case reports two patients, one with a complete mole and another with a partial mole, who were evaluated and followed up with serial beta hCG

When inundated with numerous specimens of products of conception as the consequence of miscarriage, it is all too easy for histopathologists to forget that the biology of trophoblast and the events of early placental implantation continue to fascinate because of the inherently invasive properties of the non-villous (extravillous) trophoblast. However, unlike the invasion of a malignant tumour, the invasion of trophoblast is controlled. The failure of adequate conversion of maternal uteroplacental arteries is a major pathogenetic phenomenon of important disorders of pregnancy including pre-ecla

The term gestational trophoblastic tumours covers hydatidiform moles, invasive moles and choriocarcinomas. These are rare diseases remarkable for their high chemosensitivity. The current objective is to cure all patients while preserving their potential for child bearing. Several studies have elicited prognostic factors, so that treatment can be adjusted to each individual patient. Advances in immunochemistry have led to the discovery of a highly reliable marker (HCG and beta-HCG) which has proved valuable to confirm the diagnosis and to follow the patients during and after treatment.

An invasive mole is an uncommon type of gestational trophoblastic disease, and if considering its implantation in an interstitial extrauterine location, we are facing a rarer condition. There are 14 cases described of interstitial ectopic gestational trophoblastic disease. As far as we know, we present the third case of invasive mole within interstitial location, in this case with pulmonary metastases. The diagnosis of an interstitial implantation is challenging. Our patient was initially diagnosed with an intrauterine hydatidiform molar pregnancy, and a uterine aspiration was performed. Two wee

Gestational trophoblastic disease occurs in 1-3:1000 gestations worldwide. Up to one-fifth of complete hydatidiform moles undergo malignant transformation, with 2%-4% manifesting as metastatic disease. Of these, a third present with vaginal metastases, which can cause bleeding and discharge. We describe the case of a 49-year-old primiparous woman presenting with syncope and intense bleeding from an anterior vaginal lesion, 3 weeks after uterine evacuation for a presumed spontaneous abortion. A vaginal metastatic nodule was suspected; haemostasis was achieved with vaginal packing, precluding th
