[Hydrogen ion metabolism and parenteral alimentation].

The necessity of using solutions and emulsions in parenteral nutrition of solutions directly utilisable by the cell has led to the manufactur of substances with a composition and physico-chemical nature which greatly alters H+ ions balance. Theoretical calculation and various experimental protocois have shown that the production of H+ ions may be multiplied by 3 or 4. This explains the complications of metabolic acidosis seen in association with prolonged parenteral nutrition. There are two main sources : lipid emulsions and amino-acid solutions. One litre of lipid emulsion may provide 37 to 6

Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework-Based NIR-II Activated Hydrogen Production for Treatment of Alzheimer's Disease Model Mice.

Oxidative stress is the crucial pathologic factor for causing neuron death and cognitive impairment in the progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). As a special antioxidant, molecular hydrogen (H2) is responsible for alleviating oxidative stress and associated inflammatory symptoms. However, in vivo continuous and efficient hydrogen accumulation is rather difficult to realize, thus frequent dosing is required to ensure the desired therapeutic effect. Herein, hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) composites are rationally designed to achieve sustainable near-infrared II (NIR-II) photocataly…

Naming Matters: Hydridic Hydrogen Atoms are Halogen, Chalcogen, and Pnictogen Bond Acceptors not "Hydridic Hydrogen Bond" Donors.

The definition and classification of noncovalent interactions are essential for consistent communication in supramolecular chemistry. A recent paper introduced the term "hydridic hydrogen bond" to describe interactions where hydrogen atoms bound to electropositive elements (e.g., Si, Ge, Sn) act as electron donors. However, such terminology conflicts with IUPAC definition, which requires hydrogen to be bonded to more electronegative atoms for a hydrogen bond (HB). Herein, we combine electrostatic potential analysis, energy decomposition, ELF/QTAIM, and NBO calculations to show that interaction…

Hydrogen Sulfide and Methane on Breath Test Correlate with Human Small Intestinal Hydrogen Sulfide Producers and Methanogens.

BACKGROUND: Evidence indicates that 3 gas breath testing (BT) correlates with stool microbial populations. Breath methane (CH4) levels correlate with stool Methanobrevibacter smithii levels and constipation, while hydrogen sulfide (H2S) levels correlate with stool H2S producers and diarrhea. However, their relationships to small bowel microbes are unknown. AIMS: To assess relationships between small bowel microbes and breath gases. METHODS: REIMAGINE study subjects completed a fasting single-sample BT for CH4 and H2S. During esophagogastroduodenoscopy without colon preparation, duodenal aspi…

Modeling hydrogen-assisted fatigue crack growth in low-carbon steel focusing on thermally activated hydrogen-dislocation interaction.

Hydrogen-assisted (HA) fatigue crack growth (FCG) occurs in ferritic steels, wherein H-dislocation interaction plays a vital role. We aim to model the HAFCG mechanism based on the obstruction of dislocations within the crack tip zone. Our modeling framework is as follows: H is condensed into crack tip and trapped by dislocations; these H significantly decrease dislocation mobility; stress relief via crack blunting is suppressed; localized brittle fracture triggers HAFCG. This model was substantiated experimentally in H2 gas at various load frequencies and temperatures. Theoretical formulations…

Magnesium Hydride-Mediated Sustainable Hydrogen Supply Prolongs the Vase Life of Cut Carnation Flowers via Hydrogen Sulfide.

Magnesium hydride (MgH2) is a promising solid-state hydrogen source with high storage capacity (7.6 wt%). Although it is recently established that MgH2 has potential applications in medicine because it sustainably supplies hydrogen gas (H2), the biological functions of MgH2 in plants have not been observed yet. Also, the slow reaction kinetics restricts its practical applications. In this report, MgH2 (98% purity; 0.5-25 μm size) was firstly used as a hydrogen generation source for postharvest preservation of flowers. Compared with the direct hydrolysis of MgH2 in water, the efficiency of hydr…

Hydrogen sulfide may function downstream of hydrogen peroxide in mediating darkness-induced stomatal closure in Vicia faba.

The relationship between hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) during darkness-induced stomatal closure in Vicia faba L. was investigated by using pharmacological, spectrophotographic and lasers canning confocal microscopic approaches. Darkness-induced stomatal closure was inhibited by H2S scavenger hypotaurine (HT), H2S synthesis inhibitors aminooxy acetic acid (AOA) and hydroxylamine (NH2OH) and potassium pyruvate (N3H3KO3) and ammonia (NH3), which are the products of L-/D-cysteine desulfhydrase (L-/D-CDes). Moreover, darkness induced H2S generation and increased L-/D-CDes acti…

Three isomeric N-(nitrophenyl)succinimides: isolated molecules, hydrogen-bonded sheets and a hydrogen-bonded three-dimensional framework.

Molecules of N-(2-nitrophenyl)succinimide, C10H8N2O4, are linked into sheets by a combination of C-H...O and C-H...pi(arene) hydrogen bonds. Molecules of N-(3-nitrophenyl)succinimide are linked into a three-dimensional framework by a combination of a two-centre C-H...O hydrogen bond and a three-centre C-H...(O)2 hydrogen bond. Molecules of N-(4-nitrophenyl)succinimide which lie across twofold rotation axes in space group C2/c, participate in no direction-specific intermolecular interactions.

Charge-Neutral N-H···Br as a Hydrogen-Bond Family for the Construction of Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks.

The design, synthesis, and application of porous molecular crystals constructed using intermolecular hydrogen bonds (hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks; HOFs) have attracted significant attention due to the potential flexibility and solution processability of HOFs, which arise from the nature of hydrogen bonds. HOFs are generally constructed via highly directional intermolecular N-H···N and O-H···O hydrogen bonds, while the study of HOFs constructed by low-directional hydrogen bonds has lagged somewhat. The present study reveals that charge-neutral N-H···Br hydrogen bonds are suitable for the …

Reaction Pathways in the (De)hydrogenation of N-Heterocyclic Liquid Hydrogen Carriers Over Supported Pd Catalysts.

N-heterocyclic aromatics can reversibly store H2 in chemical bonds through (de)hydrogenation reactions at <473 K, but their reaction pathways remain incompletely understood. Here, we perform (de)hydrogenation reactions of (methyl)indoles over a Pd/Al2O3 catalyst, combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations of adsorbate binding on Pd surfaces. Hydrogenation proceeds through 2,3-dihydroindole intermediates that further hydrogenate to 8H-indoles. Hydrogenation occurs first at the pyrrole ring rather than the benzene ring, likely due to differences in resonance stability. In contras…

Synergistic Role of Co0 and Lewis Basic Sites for Transfer Hydrogenation of Substituted Nitroarenes by In Situ Hydrogen Generation.

Designing green and efficient methods for synthesizing anilines remains a key challenge in synthetic organic chemistry. Hydrogenation of nitro compounds is one of the most significant and widely employed method for producing functionalized anilines. Consequently, designing catalytic systems capable of hydrogenating nitroarenes under environmentally benign and mild reaction conditions remains a challenge. In this regard, a highly efficient CoAl catalyst has been designed for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes to corresponding amines. Various structural, compositional, and morphological characteri…

Determination of hydrogen gas by 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene hydrogenation coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

Knowing the H2 concentration released from polymer materials is essential to understand the degradation degree of polymer materials. In this study, a novel strategy of 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene (DEB) hydrogenation in combination with gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS) determination of hydrogen gas (H2) was developed. In this strategy, DEB was utilized to react with H2 for establishing the quantitative analysis method of H2. A H2 analysis platform that could accurately control H2 concentration was designed and fabricated to be used to establish the quantitative method of H2. The…

Modeling of Hydrogen-Charged Notched Tensile Tests of an X70 Pipeline Steel with a Hydrogen-Informed Gurson Model.

Hydrogen can degrade the mechanical properties of steel components, which is commonly referred to as "hydrogen embrittlement" (HE). Quantifying the effect of HE on the structural integrity of components and structures remains challenging. The authors investigated an X70 pipeline steel through uncharged and hydrogen-charged (notched) tensile tests. This paper presents a combination of experimental results and numerical simulations using a micro-mechanics-inspired damage model. Four specimen geometries and three hydrogen concentrations (including uncharged) were targeted, which allowed for the c…

Characterization of the Inducible and Slow-Releasing Hydrogen Sulfide and Persulfide Donor P*: Insights into Hydrogen Sulfide Signaling.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an important mediator of inflammatory processes. However, controversial findings also exist, and its underlying molecular mechanisms are largely unknown. Recently, the byproducts of H2S, per-/polysulfides, emerged as biological mediators themselves, highlighting the complex chemistry of H2S. In this study, we characterized the biological effects of P*, a slow-releasing H2S and persulfide donor. To differentiate between H2S and polysulfide-derived effects, we decomposed P* into polysulfides. P* was further compared to the commonly used fast-releasing H2S donor sodium h…

High-pressure phases of hydrogen cyanide: formation of hydrogenated carbon nitride polymers and layers and their electronic properties.

We have performed a set of first-principles simulations to consider the possible phase transitions in molecular crystals of HCN under high pressure. Our calculations reveal several transition paths from the orthorhombic phase to tetragonal and then to triclinic phases. The transitions from the orthorhombic to the tetragonal phases are of the second order, whereas those from the tetragonal to the triclinic phases turn out to be of the first-order type and characterized by an abrupt decrease in volume. Our calculations show that, by adjustment of the temperature and pressure of the HCN molecular
