Exploring the dynamics of flow attenuation at a beaver dam sequence.

Beavers influence hydrology by constructing woody dams. Using a Before After Control Impact experimental design, we quantified the effects of a beaver dam sequence on the flow regime of a stream in SW England and consider the mechanisms that underpin flow attenuation in beaver wetlands. Rainfall-driven hydrological events were extracted between 2009 and 2020, for the impacted (n = 612) and control (n = 634) catchments, capturing events 7 years before and 3 years after beaver occupancy, at the impacted site. General additive models were used to describe average hydrograph geometry across all ev…

Tracing technique review: Contamination in municipal separate storm sewer systems (MS4s).

Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4s) are designed to route and discharge stormwater runoff directly into local water bodies. However, contamination from sources such as urban runoff and illicit connections conveyed through MS4s poses serious environmental risks, underscoring the need for source tracing research. This paper presents a comprehensive review of research conducted on tracing contamination in MS4s. The review includes a literature review, an analysis of water quality and hydrological data, and an analysis of tracing techniques, with the aim of identifying research gaps and

Optimal designs of LID based on LID experiments and SWMM for a small-scale community in Tianjin, north China.

Urban flooding and waterlogging are becoming increasingly serious due to rapid urbanization and climate change. The stormwater management philosophy of low-impact development (LID) has been applied in urban construction to alleviate these problems. The selection and placement of LID designs are the most important tasks. In this study, LID experiments were performed to calibrate the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). Then, a multi-objective optimization model, which adopted the minimum surface runoff coefficient, surcharge time, and investment cost as objectives, was established by coupling t

Transit time modeling framework for predicting freshwater salinization in urban catchments.

The salinity of inland freshwaters is rising globally, particularly in urban watersheds where winter road deicers are widely applied. Attributing stream salinity dynamics to specific sources and transport pathways remains challenging due to episodic salt inputs, engineered drainage, and strong coupling between hydrology and subsurface storage. We present a modeling framework that couples climate-driven deicer build-up and wash-off with transient transit time distribution theory to simulate salt transport through drainage, interflow, and groundwater pathways. Applied to an urban watershed in No…

Comparative Population Genetics of Rutilus rutilus and Perca fluviatilis in Lithuanian Freshwater Ecosystems.

Understanding how co-occurring freshwater species respond to the same hydrological landscape is important for interpreting genetic diversity and population connectivity. We compared the population genetic structure of two widespread freshwater fishes, Rutilus rutilus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Perca fluviatilis Linnaeus, 1758, across major Lithuanian river basins using mitochondrial ATP6 and D-loop sequences. Both species exhibited high haplotype diversity but differed markedly in genetic structure. R. rutilus showed weak differentiation, widespread haplotype sharing among basins, and demographic si

Spatial and Melt-Season Controls on the Downstream Contribution and Persistence of Glacier-Originating Bacteria Along a Glacier-Fed Stream Continuum.

Understanding the transport and fate of glacier-originating microorganisms along glacier-fed stream (GFS) gradients is critical for elucidating their downstream impacts. Yet, how glacier-originating microbes contribute to downstream communities across the GFS continuum and over the melt season remains poorly understood. Using 16S rRNA gene sequencing, we integrated spatial and temporal sampling to characterise bacterial communities along the hydrologic continuum of the Longxiazailongba (LXZLB) Glacier in the Tanggula Mountains, spanning supraglacial, glacier terminal and proglacial streams. Rainfall shapes CO₂ emission and dissolved organic matter dynamics in a karst catchment: Controlling factors revealed by isotopic and molecular signatures.

Rainfall events are key hydrological processes that regulate regional water and carbon cycling, particularly in sensitive terrestrial ecosystems such as karst regions, where groundwater recharge and carbon fluxes are tightly coupled. This study investigates the influence of rainfall on carbon dynamics in the Houzhai River catchment, a representative karst catchment with distinctive hydrological connectivity in Southwest China. By integrating accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) analyses, our results demonstrate that rai

Mitigation potential of urban greening during heatwaves and stormwater events: a modeling study for Karlsruhe, Germany.

Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of urban heat islands and stormwater flooding. In order to mitigate these threats c … ions, we used the model to simulate a green infrastructure scenario for each district with restored hydrology and tree cover at 30%. Regarding trade-offs between runoff and heat mitigation, the results confirm that dry soils before storm events lead to greater runoff reduction by 10%, and wet soils prior to heatwaves resulted in a greater evaporative coolin …

Canada1Water: Hydraulic parametrized integrated soil, bedrock and peatlands datasets.

The Canada1Water (C1W) initiative is a national-scale effort to model Canada's hydrologic cycle, integrating groundwater, surface water, and climate influences across continental Canada and shared watersheds with the United States. Soil, bedrock, and peatlands critically connect atmospheric processes, vegetation, and hydrology. Infiltration and recharge are governed by the hydraulic properties and topographic and pressure gradients, making accurate representation of surficial substrates essential in hydrological modelling. For continental-scale groundwater-surface water modelling in Canada, a …

Congo basin peatlands as coupled human-natural systems: a multidisciplinary data framework for vulnerability and resilience assessment.

Peatlands in the Congo Basin are not only critical ecological assets for carbon storage, hydrological regulation and biodiversity conservation; they are also deeply embedded in social, cultural and governance systems. Their sustainability therefore depends on their recognition as complex social-ecological systems, shaped by long-standing interactions between communities, customary institutions and natural processes. Yet, despite growing scientific attention, the vulnerability and resilience dynamics of these systems remain insufficiently understood. This study applies a multidisciplinary, syst

Glacial ecosystems on the Tibetan Plateau undergo pronounced hydrological shifts across the glacial ablation cycle, driven by the onset and … terogeneity. More importantly, dynamics across the glacial ablation cycle drive shifts in meltwater hydrology that facilitate the downstream environmental mobility of glacial resistomes, posing growing antimicrobial resistance risks within the One Health framework.

Flood risk assessment of the Garita River in the urban zone of San Luis Potosí City, by hydrodynamic modeling.

Rapid and uncontrolled urban growth and land use changes in watersheds worldwide have led to increased surface runoff within metropolitan areas, coupled with climate change, creating a risk for residents during the rainy season. The city of San Luis Potosí is no exception to this phenomenon. One affected watercourse is the Garita Stream, which flows inside the city near urbanization. It is essential to analyze the effects of urban sprawl on this stream based on historical precipitation data for the town. Hydrological and topographical information were required to conduct this research. The hyd

[Equilibrium troubles with cervical syndrome and their relation with otorhinolaryngology (author's transl)].

The equilibrium troubles occuring in connection with cervical locomotoric diseases and their otorhino-laryngologic relations have been studied in the ORL Department of National Institute of Rheumatism and Medical Hydrology. It has been found that: a) there is no connection between the seriousness of roentgenologic deformations and equilibrium troubles; b) the damage of the periphery is not characteristic; c) the complaints and symptoms are explained by the hypoxia of vestibular kern-areas as well as by damages of receptors in cervical muscles, bands and joints; d) hypotension and other central…

Multi-year time series of daily solute and isotope measurements from three Swiss pre-Alpine catchments.

Time series analyses of solute concentrations in streamwater and precipitation are powerful tools for unraveling the interplay of hydrological and biogeochemical processes at the catchment scale. While such datasets are available for many sites around the world, they often lack the necessary temporal resolution or are limited in the number of solutes they encompass. Here we present a multi-year dataset encompassing daily records of major ions and a range of trace metals in both streamwater and precipitation in three catchments in the northern Swiss Pre-Alps. These time series capture the tempo

Experimental Study of Non-Darcian Flow Characteristics in Low-Permeability Coal Pillar Dams.

The safe operation of underground reservoirs and environmental protection heavily rely on the water flow through coal pillar dams in coal mines. Meanwhile, research on the flow characteristics in coal pillar dams has been limited due to their low hydraulic conductivity. To address this gap, this study assembled a novel seepage experimental device and conducted a series of carefully designed seepage experiments to examine the characteristics of low-permeability in coal pillar dams. The experiments aim to explore the relationship between water flux and hydraulic gradient, considering varying cor

Satellite-derived cyanobacteria frequency and magnitude in headwaters & near-dam reservoir surface waters of the Southern U.S.

Reservoirs are dominant features of the modern hydrologic landscape and provide vital services. However, the unique morphology of reservoirs can create suitable conditions for excessive algae growth and associated cyanobacteria blooms in shallow in-flow reservoir locations by providing warm water environments with relatively high nutrient inputs, deposition, and nutrient storage. Cyanobacteria harmful algal blooms (cyanoHAB) are costly water management issues and bloom recurrence is associated with economic costs and negative impacts to human, animal, and environmental health. As cyanoHAB occu

The Shallow and Deep Hypothesis: Subsurface Vertical Chemical Contrasts Shape Nitrate Export Patterns from Different Land Uses.

Eutrophication has threatened water resources worldwide, yet mechanistic understanding on controls of nutrient export remains elusive. This work tests the shallow and deep hypothesis: subsurface vertical chemical contrasts regulate nitrate export patterns under different land use conditions. We synthesized data from 228 watersheds and used reactive transport modeling (500 simulations) under broad land use, climate, and geology conditions. Data synthesis indicated that human perturbation has amplified chemical contrasts in shallow water (e.g., soil water) versus deep waters (e.g., groundwater),

Impact of land use changes on water quality in headwaters of the Three Gorges Reservoir.

The assessment of spatial and temporal variation of water quality influenced by land use is necessary to manage the environment sustainably in basin scales. Understanding the correlations between land use and different formats of nonpoint source nutrients pollutants is a priority in order to assess pollutants loading and predicting the impact on surface water quality. Forest, upland, paddy field, and pasture are the dominant land use in the study area, and their land use pattern status has direct connection with nonpoint source (NPS) pollutant loading. In this study, two land use scenarios (19
