[Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis and its relation to metabolic parameters].

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a non-inflammatory disease of skeleton characterized by hyperostosis of axial and peripheral skeleton. The association of DISH with type 2 diabetes mellitus and other metabolic alterations (e.g. impaired lipid metabolism) has been known for many years. However, it has not been explained satisfactorily yet. It seems that this pathological process is significantly influenced by hyperglycemia and insulin resistance. Also, it is affected by growth hormone (GH) and its action mediated by insulin-like growth factor (IGF) and its binding proteins (IG

Multiple meningiomas, craniofacial hyperostosis and retinal abnormalities in Proteus syndrome.

Because clinical evidence suggests that Proteus syndrome may be caused by a somatic mutation during early development, resulting in mosaicism, the possible types of abnormalities and their clinical distributions are highly variable. Here, we report on an unusual patient with Proteus syndrome. Manifestations included multiple meningiomas, polymicrogyria, and periventricular heterotopias. Both eyes had epibulbar cystic lesions. The retina showed diffuse disorganization with nodular gliosis, retinal pigmentary abnormalities, chronic papilledema, and optic atrophy. Other abnormalities included pro

Cortical hyperostosis simulating osteomyelitis after short-term prostaglandin E1 infusion.

UNLABELLED: We describe a newborn with cyanotic congenital heart disease who developed severe cortical hyperostosis of his long bones simulating osteomyelitis with remarkable elevation of alkaline phosphatase on the 11th day of prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) infusion. Soft tissue swelling and tenderness disappeared 6 days after discontinuation of PGE1, however alkaline phosphatase remained high. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge this is the first reported case that presented with such an acute complication of PGE1 therapy within a short period.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis: an unusual cause of difficult intubation.

A case is reported in which anterior osteophytes on the cervical vertebra, in combination with a subglottic stenosis, resulted in distortion of the airway and led to unexpected difficulties during intubation. The osteophytes, associated with the syndrome of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) were centred at the midcervical level and resulted in anterior displacement of the larynx with an acute angulation of the trachea just below the larynx. This acute angulation, immediately above an unrecognized subglottic stenosis, rendered it impossible to pass all but the smallest endotrachea

[Tumor-like bone lesions in sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis and palmoplantaris pustulosis].

We present two unusual cases of sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis (SCCH) in conjunction with palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) and additional tumour like manifestations in a scapula and a femur respectively. The association of SCCH with complexes of signs and symptoms such as chronic multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO), or other nosological entities such as seronegative spondylarthropathies, is discussed.

[Adult degenerative and senile degenerative hyperostosis triangularis ilii (author's transl)].

A randomized study of 2000 patients (1000 males, 1000 females) revealed two forms of the triangular hyperostosis of the ilium in female patients. The hyperostosis triangularis ilii, HTI, is also known as osteitis condensans. One form of HTI concerning women under the age of 50 is called the adult generative HTI, the other beyond the age of 50 senile degenerative HTI. These two forms are not evident in male patients. The 3.05% incidence of HTI in adults appeared to be higher than presumed till now. The sex incidence male/female of 1:1.6 diverges considerably from preceding investigations. Histo

Clinical Image: Esophageal Compression Secondary to Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a non-inflammatory disorder characterized by ossification of spinal ligaments and entheses. Although thoracic involvement is most common, cervical disease may rarely cause clinically significant esophageal compression and dysphagia. We present the case of a 73-year-old man with progressive dysphagia whose videofluoroscopic swallowing study, cervical computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated prominent anterior cervical osteophytes causing marked pharyngoesophageal compression, consistent with DISH. This case highlights th

MRI evaluation of hyperostosis frontalis interna: differentiation and diagnostic insights.

INTRODUCTION: To delineate the MRI characteristics of Hyperostosis Frontalis Interna (HFI) and evaluate its imaging features to aid in accurate diagnosis and differentiation from other pathologies, particularly metastatic disease. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 74 patients with HFI was conducted. MRI sequences, including pre-contrast T1-weighted, post-contrast T1-weighted, and T2-weighted fat-saturation imaging, were evaluated. Quantitative and qualitative assessments of HFI signal intensity and enhancement patterns were performed. The Hershkovitz classification categorized the extent o

The association between cervical diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis and dysphagia.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is increasingly recognized as a structural cause of dysphagia due to anterior cervical osteophyte formation, yet its clinical risk factors, severity determinants, and laterality patterns remain poorly understood. This study aims to investigate the associations between cervical DISH presence, severity, and laterality with clinical, metabolic, and nutritional factors in patients presenting with dysphagia. This was a retrospective observational study including 208 dysphagia patients who underwent head and neck CT imaging between 2014 and 2023. DISH

Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis Presenting With Hoarseness-A Case Report.

Unilateral vocal cord paralysis-related voice change is a common presentation in the otorhinolaryngology clinic. The well-known etiology was recurrent laryngeal nerve injury due to surgery, traumatic event, or tumor compression, but there are still other etiologies that could interfere with the route of the recurrence laryngeal nerve and lead to unilateral paralysis of the vocal cord. In this report, we presented a rare case of unilateral vocal cord paralysis resulting in diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis.

Synovitis-acne-pustulosis-hyperostosis-osteitis Syndrome with Bilateral Pleural Effusion.

Pleural effusion is a rare manifestation in synovitis-acne-pustulosis-hyperostosis-osteitis (SAPHO) syndrome, which is characterized by the presence of osteoarticular lesions and dermatological involvement. We herein report a 71-year-old man with pleural effusion resulting from SAPHO syndrome. He was successfully treated using corticosteroids and has experienced no recurrence for one year. We should consider SAPHO syndrome when encountering cases of anterior chest pain and pleural fluid.

Cervical Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis: Rare Cause of Emergency Tracheostomy.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a rare and potentially life-threatening syndrome. We present the case of a patient complaining about severe dyspnoea and diagnosed with vocal cord paresis. An emergency tracheotomy was performed to restore his breathing. Diagnostic imaging revealed large mass-occupying cervical osteophytes compressing the larynx. The osteophytes were removed via an anterior cervical approach, and vital signs were normalized. However, postoperatively, a fistula was discovered between the upper part of the oesophagus and the trachea. As a result, a gastrostomy t

A Rare Case of Lethal Prenatal-Onset Infantile Cortical Hyperostosis.

Infantile cortical hyperostosis, or Caffey's disease, usually presents with typical radiological features of soft tissue swelling and cortical thickening of the underlying bone. The disease can be fatal when it presents antenatally, especially before a gestational age of 35 weeks. This fatal, premature form of the disease is known to occur in various ethnic groups around the globe, and approximately 30 cases have been reported in English literature. This paper is unique in that it is the first paper to report a lethal form of prenatal-type infantile cortical hyperostosis diagnosed in South Kor

Hyperostosis frontalis interna in postmenopausal women-Possible relation to osteoporosis.

To improve our understanding of hyperostosis frontalis interna (HFI), we investigated whether HFI was accompanied by changes in the postcranial skeleton. Based on head CT scan analyses, 103 postmenopausal women were divided into controls without HFI and those with HFI, in whom we measured the thickness of frontal, occipital, and parietal bones. Women in the study underwent dual energy x-ray absorptiometry to analyze the bone density of the hip and vertebral region and external geometry of the proximal femora. Additionally, all of the women completed a questionnaire about symptoms and condition
