Changes in patients with gender-identity problems after parental death.

The authors studied the incidence of parental loss among 163 gender-disordered patients and an equal number of psychiatric control patients. An unusually high number of gender-disordered patients had lost their fathers, particularly during adolescence and early adulthood. Many of these patients showed shifts in gender identity in the year after loss, and during that period many requested surgical sex reassignment for the first time. Changes in the patient's relationship with the remaining parent and experiences related to loss of the father are discussed.

Masculinity, femininity, academic performance, and health: further evidence concerning the androgyny controversy.

Spence and Helmreich's (1978) claim that individual differences in four components of achievement motivation (mastery, work, competitiveness, and personal unconcern) are attributable to masculinity and femininity rather than to gender was generally supported, with one exception: Masculinity was associated with competitiveness for males but not for females. Furthermore, competitive women were more likely than noncompetitive women to have mental and physical health problems, but there was no such difference for males. In general, masculinity emerged as a beneficial constellation of traits for bo

Understanding ethnicity, identity formation, and risk behavior among adolescents of Mexican descent.

The population of adolescents of Mexican descent is growing rapidly in the United States. However, the health needs of this group are not being adequately addressed by the health care system. Understanding the factors contributing to risk behavior in adolescents of Mexican descent may help improve service delivery and use. This article presents a sociodemographic profile of this group as well as a description of how one's degree of ethnic identification, acculturation, and other risk factors may contribute to problem behavior. Recommendations are provided to increase culturally appropriate pre

Putting oneself in the perspective of the other: a framework for self-other differentiation.

Self-other differentiation requires both that one can understand the actions others perform, and that one can attribute these actions to them. Understanding implies that a complete description of the actions of other agents can be available in the brain of the observer. Attributing implies that the agent can be clearly differentiated from the self. The model for the self-other differentiation proposed here can therefore involve two steps: I first displace myself at the location of the person I observe in order to specify her/his location in space. Then, I simulate the action I observe from tha

The increase in alcohol consumption among women: a phenomenon related to accessibility or stress? A general population study.

This population survey of Norwegian women (N = 3997) and their husbands explore the relative importance of accessibility and stress variables in explaining the level of women's alcohol consumption. Among the accessibility-variables, population density and husbands' alcohol consumption have a significant impact on the women's consumption. Employment among women is not significantly related to their alcohol use when controlling for the husbands' consumption. Stress variables (work stress, nervousness) have no significant influence on consumption when controlling for accessibility variables. The

[The narcissistic family].

Based on the pathology of narcissism as displayed by a number of pre-psychotic and psychotic teenagers, this article deals with exploring the close dependence that is maintained between the patients and their nuclear families. Several of us, using a therapeutic approach in an institutional setting, are trying to bring defective narcissistic "givens" into play in order to give the teenager a chance at ex-istence... In this article, the author suggest pointing out the need for such a way of synchronizing particular concepts, pushing to the very limits of psychoanalysis.

Tests of gender feelings and behavior in homosexuality, transvestism and transsexualism.

Categorized 64 male transsexual and transvestite Ss into two groups on the basis of the strength of their feminine gender identity. The two groups were compared to a homosexual group and a control group on four tests designed to measure gender feelings and behavior, namely: the California Personality Inventory Femininity Scale, the Draw-A-Person test, the Franck Drawing Completion test, and the Information and Vocabulary subtests of the WAIS. It was found that the CPI-Fe scale and DAP test significantly correlate with the degree of feminine gender identity reported by the Ss. However, the two

Responses given by A and B quasi-therapists to differing sexual roles in an intropunitive-neurotic prototype: an analogue study.

Twenty-four male undergraduate students were selected on the basis of their A--B status. Six Ss of each type were assigned randomly to one of two videotaped stimulus conditions, an adequate or an inadequate sexual role variant of an intropunitive neurotic prototype. Two dependent measures, response time and number of confrontations, were used and conceptualized in terms of an approach-avoidance continuum. Differential responding on the basis of the Ss' A--B status was not supported in this study.

The Mediating Role of Identification with the Aggressor in the Link Between Childhood Abuse and Intimate Partner Violence.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pervasive public health issue with significant psychological, physical, and social consequences. Research indicates that adverse childhood experiences, particularly emotional and physical abuse, increase the risk of both IPV perpetration and victimization in adulthood. However, the psychological mechanisms underlying this relationship remain insufficiently explored. This study examines the mediating role of identification with the aggressor in the association between childhood abuse and IPV outcomes, specifically psychological aggression and physical assaul

Gained social identification and sense of shared experience after flood exposure: Psychosocial pathways to post-traumatic symptoms and growth.

This research provides the first quasi-experimental and longitudinal examination of the Social Identity Model of Traumatic Identity Change among individuals affected by the September 2024 flood in Poland. Advancing the state of the art, we analyzed the emergence of identification with flood-affected people and extended the model by incorporating the sense of shared experience (SSE) within this group. Surveys were completed 3 months (N = 630) and 7 months after the flood (N = 315). The results indicated that the severity of flood exposure was linked with higher post-traumatic stress (PTS) and p

Gendernauts in the Cistem - How Do Nonbinary People Handle Social Groups and Gender Minority Stress?

This study explores how nonbinary individuals manage minority stress within the predominantly binary society of Switzerland. Utilizing social identity theory and minority stress theory, along with thematic analysis of focus group interviews with 16 nonbinary individuals and 14 social identity maps, the study found three concentric circles of social groups: circle 1 (family, partners, friends), circle 2 (coworkers, LGBTIQA+ communities), and circle 3 (the public, media, Swiss institutions). Participants primarily felt affirmed and supported by circles 1 and 2. They reported feeling less support

Social life aspects of young adults with cleft lip and palate: grounded theory approach.

OBJECTIVES: The findings of many questionnaire and inventory studies suggest that people with cleft lip and/or palate report a decreased quality of life. Common problems include dissatisfaction with the external appearance of the lips and nose, speech problems, depression, and anxiety. This qualitative study aimed to explore the subjective perceptions and values of young adults with clefts, particularly with regard to their social lives. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twelve persons participated in an in-depth interview. Among those, seven had a repaired isolated cleft palate involving only the hard/s

Cross-gender behavior and psychopathology in boy psychiatric outpatients.

One hundred 5- to 12-year-old boys referred for outpatient psychiatric evaluation were assessed for cross-gender behavior using the Child Behavior and Attitude Questionnaire (CBAQ) and the Child Game Participation Questionnaire (CGPQ), and for possible associated psychopathology using the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and clinical psychiatric (DSM-III) diagnoses. On the two feminine scales of the CBAQ and CGPQ, 30 to 50% scored within defined clinical ranges. High feminine scale scorers did not have higher Total CBCL scores than lower feminine scale scorers, and scores on the feminine scales

Sex differences in schizophrenia.

Demographic and clinical characteristics of 275 schizophrenics consecutively admitted to seven hospitals were examined. Males were younger than females when first hospitalized, diagnosed and treated. Psychiatrists rated on two rating scales by using a structured interview to compare the symptomatology. Female schizophrenics were more agitated, inappropriate, silly, irrelevant, over-talkative, and exhibiting more flight of ideas, while male schizophrenics were more slowed, hypoactive, grandiose, withdrawn, and showing more blocking, auditory hallucinations and poor communications. Symptomatology in men who were molested as children: a comparison study.

Forty male and 40 female crisis center clients, evenly divided in terms of molestation history, were examined for possible long-term sequelae of sexual abuse. Although molestation during childhood was associated with previous suicide attempts and with elevated symptomatology on the Trauma Symptom Checklist, no differences between males and females were found on these variables.

The perversion of fetishism in women.

This paper attempts to demonstrate that fetishism as defined by Freud in males also exists among women. Freud described fetishism as a defense against castration anxiety arising from the perception of the female genitals. It is suggested that the main difference between male fetishism and female fetishism is that because of developmental factors involving the phallic phase, for women the fetish represents the penis of the father, not of the mother. Clinical material is presented to support these hypotheses.
