Poliomyelitis outbreak in Natal/KwaZulu, South Africa, 1987-1988. 2. Immunity aspects.

An extensive poliomyelitis outbreak due to type 1 poliovirus took place in Natal/KwaZulu, South Africa, in 1987-1988, causing 412 paralytic cases. This epidemic differed from a previously described outbreak in Gazankulu, South Africa, in 1982 in that it occurred against a background of relatively good immunity. Thus, only 12% of patients lacked antibodies to types 2 and 3, indicating lack of previous immunization, and 76% of healthy children sampled in the epidemic area had serological immunity to all 3 types of poliovirus. The occurrence of extensive outbreaks in relatively well-immunized com

Modelling of Waning of Immunity and Reinfection Induced Antibody Boosting of SARS-CoV-2 in Manaus, Brazil.

It was reported that the Brazilian city, Manaus, likely exceeded the herd immunity threshold (presumably 60-70%) in November 2020 after the first wave of COVID-19, based on the serological data of a routine blood donor. However, a second wave started in November 2020, when an even higher magnitude of deaths hit the city. The arrival of the second wave coincided with the emergence of the Gamma (P.1) variant of SARS-CoV-2, with higher transmissibility, a younger age profile of cases, and a higher hospitalization rate. Prete et al. (2020 MedRxiv 21256644) found that 8 to 33 of 238 (3.4-13.9%) rep

Patterns of Rift Valley fever virus seropositivity in domestic ruminants in central South Africa four years after a large outbreak.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a mosquito-borne viral zoonosis showing complex epidemiological patterns that are poorly understood in South Africa. Large outbreaks occur in the central interior at long, irregular intervals, most recently in 2010-2011; however, the level of herd immunity of ruminant livestock, a key determinant of outbreaks, is unknown. During 2015-2016 a cross-sectional study on 234 randomly-selected farms investigated the prevalence, patterns of, and factors associated with, antibodies to RVF virus (RVFV) in livestock in an area heavily affected by that outbreak. A RVFV inhibitio

Estimating the basic reproduction rate of HFMD using the time series SIR model in Guangdong, China.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) has caused a substantial burden of disease in China, especially in Guangdong Province. Based on notifiable cases, we use the time series Susceptible-Infected-Recovered model to estimate the basic reproduction rate (R0) and the herd immunity threshold, understanding the transmission and persistence of HFMD more completely for efficient intervention in this province. The standardized difference between the reported and fitted time series of HFMD was 0.009 (<0.2). The median basic reproduction rate of total, enterovirus 71, and coxsackievirus 16 cases in Guang

Lack of antigenic diversification of major outer membrane proteins during clonal waves of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup A colonization and disease.

In particular in the 'meningitis belt' of sub-Saharan Africa, epidemic meningococcal meningitis is a severe public health problem. In the past decades, serogroup A lineages have been the dominant etiologic agents, but also other serogroups have caused outbreaks. A comprehensive vaccine based on subcapsular outer membrane proteins (OMPs) is not available. Here, we have investigated whether meningococcal populations overcome herd immunity by changing antigenic properties of their OMPs. Meningococcal isolates were collected in the context of longitudinal studies in Ghana between 2002 and 2008 and

Cost-effectiveness analysis of a universal vaccination programme with the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV-7) in Sweden.

The 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV-7) has proved to be highly effective against invasive pneumococcal disease and has also provided some protection against all-cause pneumonia and acute otitis media. The objective of this study was to evaluate the projected health benefits, costs and cost-effectiveness of vaccination with the 7-valent conjugated pneumococcal vaccine compared with no vaccination, in all infants in Sweden, taking herd immunity into account. A Markov model was used and a hypothetical birth cohort was simulated for a lifelong perspective. The results show that vaccin

Assessment of efficacy of a live oral poliovirus vaccine for virulent Sabin-like poliovirus 1 strains in Japan.

Virulent Sabin-like poliovirus (VSLP) was isolated from river and sewage waters between October 1993 and September 1995 in Toyama Prefecture, Japan (Yoshida et al., Lancet 356, 1461-1463, 2000). In this study, to assess the possibility of an epidemic of poliomyelitis caused by a VSLP in Japan under the current vaccination policy of administration of live attenuated oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV), we determined titers of serum neutralizing antibodies to poliovirus 1 (PV-1) strains Sabin (vaccine strain), Mahoney (wild-type strain) and G4-12 (VSLP) in various groups of residents of Toyama Prefect

Dynamic models of meningococcal carriage, disease, and the impact of serogroup C conjugate vaccination.

Much interest has surrounded the use of conjugate vaccines in recent years, with the development of vaccines against disease caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b, Neisseria meningitidis, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. These vaccines offer the potential for safe and effective disease control, but some questions remain, particularly regarding the duration and mechanisms of protection and the longer-term impact of vaccination on carriage. In this paper, the authors use data on immunization with serogroup C meningococcal conjugate vaccines in England and Wales to develop and apply a mathematical

Triumph of Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccines: Overcoming a Common Foe.

Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) has reduced the burden of pneumococcal disease by the near elimination of vaccine serotypes from countries giving a booster dose at >9 months of life. Herd protection, induced by interruption of pneumococcal vaccine type transmission has protected children too young to be immunized, children and adults with underlying risk conditions for invasive pneumococcal disease, and the elderly. PCV has rolled out in most poor countries, but millions of children remain un-immunized especially in middle income countries because of cost constraints. These are being met

Prolongation of Tick-Borne Encephalitis Cycles in Warmer Climatic Conditions.

Tick-borne encephalitis exhibits profound inter-annual fluctuations in incidence. Previous studies showed that three-fifths of the variation can be explained in terms of four superimposed oscillations: a quasi-biennial, triennial, pentennial, and a decadal cycle. This study was conducted to determine how these cycles could be influenced by climate change. Epidemiological data, spanning from the 1970s to the present, and originating from six regions/countries bridging Scandinavia and the Mediterranean, represented a temporal/latitudinal gradient. Spectral analysis of time series was used to det

Age-specific mixing generates transient outbreak risk following critical-level vaccination.

Measles elimination goals have been adopted in a range of countries, sub-regions, and regions since the WHO declared an elimination goal by 2015 or 2020. All countries attempt to achieve and maintain high coverage through routine immunization programmes. This routine strategy, however, does not ensure the elimination goal of measles. Many developed countries, such as the United States, that have succeeded in interrupting measles transmission earlier, are now experiencing outbreaks with an increasing number of cases. Using a stochastic, age-structured model of measles vaccination dynamics, we e

Benefit-cost aspects of rubella immunization.

There are substantial net economic benefits from rubella immunization. This is true for immunization of infants of both sexes and of teenage girls. The ability to use combined measles-rubella vaccine and the occurrence of herd immunity favors vaccination of infants. However, even more important than the choice of strategy of immunization is the development of programs for full implementation of the chosen strategy.

The role of misinformation in COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in low- & middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, timely vaccination was crucial in acquiring herd immunity. While high-income countries typically had better access to vaccines, interventions were implemented to improve accessibility for low and middle-income countries (LMICs). Vaccine uptake presented major barriers to achieving herd immunity globally and was more significant in LMICs. Vaccine hesitancy was amplified by misinformation, including but not limited to social media misinformation. This scoping review aims to: (1) explore the role of misinformation in COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in LMICs an

Review: The Landscape of Antiviral Therapy for COVID-19 in the Era of Widespread Population Immunity and Omicron-Lineage Viruses.

The goals of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) antiviral therapy early in the pandemic were to prevent severe disease, hospitalization, and death. As these outcomes have become infrequent in the age of widespread population immunity, the objectives have shifted. For the general population, COVID-19-directed antiviral therapy should decrease symptom severity and duration and minimize infectiousness, and for immunocompromised individuals, antiviral therapy should reduce severe outcomes and persistent infection. The increased recognition of virologic rebound following ritonavir-boosted nirmatre

The Importance of Advancing Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Vaccines in Children.

While the role of children in the transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) remains to be defined, children likely play an important role based on our knowledge of other respiratory viruses. Children are more likely to be asymptomatic or have milder symptoms and less likely to present for healthcare and be tested for SARS-CoV-2. Thus, our current estimates are likely under-representative of the true burden of SARS-CoV-2 in children. Given the potential direct benefit of a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine in children and the substantial indirect benefit through community pr

Can herd seroprevalence be used as an indicator of enzootic stability for bovine anaplasmosis? Insights from a case-control field study in Brazil.

Bovine anaplasmosis presents a significant challenge to livestock production in tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions. For many years, the concept of enzootic stability/instability (initially established for babesiosis) and herd seroprevalence as an indicator of outbreak risks have been applied to anaplasmosis. However, this model has never been definitively validated for Anaplasma marginale. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between herd immunity (seroprevalence) and the occurrence of anaplasmosis outbreaks in Southern Brazil. A case-control study was conducte

Change in milk production after treatment against gastrointestinal nematodes according to grazing history, parasitological and production-based indicators in adult dairy cows.

To investigate future tools for targeted selective treatment against gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) in adult dairy cows, we evaluated herd and individual cow factors associated with the post-treatment milk production (MP) response over time. A field trial involving 20 pasturing dairy herds in Western France was conducted in autumn 2010 and autumn 2011. In each herd, lactating cows were randomly allocated to a treatment group (fenbendazole) (623 cows), or a control group (631 cows). Daily cow MP was recorded from 2 weeks before until 10 to 14 weeks after treatment. Individual serum anti-Oster

Emergence of a PRRSV Strain Recombined From Two Modified-Live Virus Vaccines and Its Elimination From a Breeding Herd.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is one of the most challenging diseases for swine production. The PRRS virus (PRRSV) is an RNA virus that replicates via an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RDRP) mechanism, which is prone to high mutation rates. Recombinations are characterized by the exchange of genetic material across two or more viruses. Modified live virus (MLV) vaccines produce an immune response to PRRSV after replicating in pigs, similar to natural exposure. Here, we report the emergence of an MLV-like recombinant strain, its associated production impact, and its disapp

"My son can not attend the school because 5 classmates are unvaccinated". On the question of compulsory vaccinations and the risk for immune-compromised children into the schools: the case of paediatric cancer patients.

Since 2017, 10 vaccines are compulsory for newborns in Italy and unvaccinated children are not admitted to kindergartens. Recently the Italian Government announced the perspective of reforming the law about the compulsory vaccination. A debated started about the presence, in the same class of the schools, of unvaccinated and immunocompromised children. Cancer is the one of the most important cause of immunodepression among children: after the chemoterapy, there is a period of 13-23 months in which the cancer survivors have to come back at the school and at to the "normal life" (even for psycho
