Importance of cyberspace for the assessment of the drug abuse market: preliminary results from the Psychonaut 2002 project.

What do therapy and cybertherapy need to take into account to be effective for the treatment of drug-related disorders? The Psychonaut 2002 project is aimed to create a new and updated Web-based tool, which will be based on evolving drug scenarios, in order to provide professionals from the drug addiction field with easily accessible and reliable information. The drug abuse settings available on the Web will be described and the methodology will be discussed. Preliminary results of a search on MDMA and MDMA-like substances confirm that it is possible both to identify emerging trends and to pro

Clinical note comparison and data retrieval via embedding vectors: model selection, metrics, and convergence.

BACKGROUND: Embedding models are an integral part of generative AI architectures, transforming text into embedding vectors that represent semantic content in numerical form. Despite their central role, their performance in clinical settings remains underexplored. We evaluated embedding models across two tasks: semantic difference detection in clinical notes, and data retrieval from patient records. METHODS: Eight models were applied to synthetic discharge summaries in English, Swedish, and Finnish. Semantic sensitivity was assessed by introducing controlled perturbations (deletion, modificati

Agent-MIRA: AI-orchestrated medical imaging agent for PET image retrieval and assistance.

Reporting on medical images can be time-consuming, especially in high-volume clinical settings. AI-agents designated to specific medical imaging tasks can potentially lead to improvements in clinical workflows. We present a prototype AI-agent to support clinical decision making by retrieving medical images which best match the patient images based on similarity and provide uncertainty estimation. The framework requires clinical metadata and PET images with lesion segmentation. A new patient's PET scan is processed by converting it to a feature vector representative of the image, which then ena

Agentic memory-augmented retrieval and evidence grounding for medical question-answering tasks.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether a tool-using agent-based system built on large language models (LLMs) outperforms standalone LLMs on medical question-answering tasks. METHODS: We developed a unified, open-source LLM-based agentic system that integrates document retrieval, reranking, evidence grounding, and diagnosis generation to support dynamic, multi-step medical reasoning. Our system features a lightweight retrieval-augmented generation pipeline for efficient evidence retrieval and reranking, coupled with a cache-and-prune memory bank, enabling efficient long-context inference beyond standa

Curated retrieval-augmented generation for dental traumatology.

OBJECTIVES: To validate DT-RAG, a curated retrieval-augmented generation system for dental traumatology decision support, against eight commercial large language models. METHODS: A knowledge base of 250 curated text units ("chunks") from five authoritative sources (IADT 2020, ESE 2021, Krastl 2021, AAE 2013, Cochrane) was built and deployed with Gemini 2.5 Flash as base model. In Study 1, 99 binary clinical questions were submitted in three runs to DT-RAG and eight LLMs; modal accuracy was compared by McNemar exact tests with Holm correction. In Study 2, seven blinded specialists scored DT-RA

Medical Concept Normalization of German Clinical Expressions to SNOMED CT.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical narratives in electronic health records frequently contain clinical expressions describing medical conditions. Their free-text format limits interoperability and automated processing. Medical concept normalization (MCN) addresses this challenge by mapping textual expressions to standardized terminology concepts, such as those from SNOMED CT. However, clinical language is characterized by abbreviations, spelling variants, and short forms, which complicate automatic normalization. METHODS: In this work, we investigate the MCN of short German clinical expressions to SNOMED

Optimising clinical information extraction: a comparative study of retrieval-augmented generation techniques in clinical notes.

Extracting clinically meaningful information from free-text notes in specific clinical settings, such as Australian aged care facilities, remains challenging due to the heterogeneity of text documents, which lack standardised structure and terminology. Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) can improve the precision and grounding of large language model (LLM) outputs; however, the choice of retrieval strategies remains understudied despite its critical importance for clinical information extraction (IE). Using real-world clinical notes from Australian aged care facilities, we systematically comp

Case reports unlocked: Leveraging retrieval-augmented generation with large language models to advance research on psychological child maltreatment.

BACKGROUND: Research on psychological child maltreatment is impeded by a lack of high-quality structured data. Crucial information is often documented in child protective services (CPS) case files, but only in narrative form. Recent research on the utilization of retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) methods with large language models (LLMs) for extracting structured data from narratives has demonstrated significant potential. RAG methods can facilitate automated classification, thereby eliminating the need for laborious annotation. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to extract structured data from narrative

Extraction of relations between genes and diseases from text and large-scale data analysis: implications for translational research.

BACKGROUND: Current biomedical research needs to leverage and exploit the large amount of information reported in scientific publications. Automated text mining approaches, in particular those aimed at finding relationships between entities, are key for identification of actionable knowledge from free text repositories. We present the BeFree system aimed at identifying relationships between biomedical entities with a special focus on genes and their associated diseases. RESULTS: By exploiting morpho-syntactic information of the text, BeFree is able to identify gene-disease, drug-disease and d

Three-dimensional spatiotemporal features for fast content-based retrieval of focal liver lesions.

Content-based image retrieval systems for 3-D medical datasets still largely rely on 2-D image-based features extracted from a few representative slices of the image stack. Most 2 -D features that are currently used in the literature not only model a 3-D tumor incompletely but are also highly expensive in terms of computation time, especially for high-resolution datasets. Radiologist-specified semantic labels are sometimes used along with image-based 2-D features to improve the retrieval performance. Since radiological labels show large interuser variability, are often unstructured, and requir

[Multimodal document management in radiotherapy].

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: After incorporating treatment planning and the organisational model of treatment planning in the operating schedule system (BAS, "Betriebsablaufsystem"), complete document qualities were embedded in the digital environment. The aim of this project was to integrate all documents independent of their source (paper-bound or digital) and to make content from the BAS available in a structured manner. As many workflow steps as possible should be automated, e.g. assigning a document to a patient in the BAS. Additionally it must be guaranteed that at all times it could be trace

Using LOINC to link 10 terminology standards to one unified standard in a specialized domain.

Despite the existence of multiple standards for the coding of biomedical data and the known benefits of doing so, there remain a myriad of biomedical information domain spaces that are essentially un-coded and unstandardized. Perhaps a worse situation is when the same or similar information in a given domain is coded to a variety of different standards. Such is the case with cephalometrics - standardized measurements of angles and distances between specified landmarks on X-ray film used for orthodontic treatment planning and a variety of research applications. We describe how we unified the ex

Design and development of an automatic data acquisition system for a balance study using a smartcard system.

For measurement value logging of board angle values during balance training, it is necessary to develop a measurement system. This study will provide data for a balance study using the smartcard. The data acquisition comes automatically. An individually training plan for each proband is necessary. To store the proband identification a smartcard with an I2C data bus protocol and an E2PROM memory system is used. For reading the smartcard data a smartcard reader is connected via universal serial bus (USB) to a notebook. The data acquisition and smartcard read programme is designed with Microsoft®
