Principles of the eradication or control of tsetse flies.

The success of attempts to control African trypanosomiasis afflicting both men and animals through the destruction of the tsetse vector depends on a realistic assessment of human and ecological factors in infested regions. The complete eradication of tsetse is at present possible only in limited areas, and elsewhere the advantages of periodic control campaigns have to be weighed carefully against their cost.

Screening of the highly pathogenic Beauveria bassiana BEdy1 against Sogatella furcifera and exploration of its infection mode.

The white-backed planthopper (WBPH, Sogatella furcifera) is a notorious pest affecting rice production in many Asian countries. Beauveria bassiana, as the most extensively studied and applied insect pathogenic fungus, is a type of green and safe biological control fungus compared to chemical insecticides, and it does not pose the "3R" problem. In this study, the strain BEdy1, which had better pathogenicity to WBPH, was screened out from eight strains of B. bassiana. The daily growth rate, sporulation, and germination rate of BEdy1 strain were 3.74 mm/d, 1.37 × 108 spores/cm2, and 96.00%, respe

Only one of three hydrophobins (Hyd1-3) contributes to conidial hydrophobicity and insect pathogenicity of Metarhizium robertsii.

Class I/II hydrophobins constitute a family of small amphiphilic proteins that mediate cell hydrophobicity and adhesion to host or substrata and have pleiotropic effects in filamentous fungi. Here we report that only class I Hyd1 is essential for conidial hydrophobicity and insect pathogenicity among three hydrophobins (Hyd1-3) characterized in Metarhizium robertsii, an insect-pathogenic fungus. Aerial conidiation levels of three Δhyd1 mutants were much more reduced in 5-day-old cultures than in 7-day-old cultures, which were wettable (hydrophilic), but restored to a wild-type level in 15-day-

Mycorrhizal Inoculation Enhances Nutrient Absorption and Induces Insect-Resistant Defense of Elymus nutans.

The majority of terrestrial plants can form symbiotic associations on their roots with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in the soil to stimulate the growth and nutrient uptake of the host plant and to improve plant resistance to insects and disease. However, the use of AMF for insect control on gramineous forages requires further study. Here, we evaluated the effects of AMF (Funneliformis mosseae) inoculation on the defense against Locusta migratoria attack in Elymus nutans. Inoculation assays showed that mycorrhizal plants had a higher resistance than non-inoculated plants, as evidenced by …

Aphicidal efficacy of scorpion- and spider-derived neurotoxins.

Insect-specific neurotoxins that act within the insect hemocoel (body cavity) represent an untapped resource for insect pest management. On the basis of recent advances made in development of appropriate delivery systems for transport of these toxins from the insect gut, across the gut epithelium to their target site, we screened neurotoxins derived from scorpion or spider venom for efficacy against the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, and the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae. Toxins were selected to represent different modes of electrophysiological action, including activity on voltage-gated

NlCYP417A1 is a critical regulator of molting by governing ecdysone homeostasis in the brown planthopper.

BACKGROUND: The brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens, is a destructive rice pest across Asia. Suppressing insect development is enduring goals in insect pest management, underpinning the action of existing insecticides and guiding the design of new ones. Insect molting, which is tightly regulated by ecdysteroid signaling, is essential for insect growth and development. Cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes play critical roles in ecdysteroid biosynthesis, and identifying P450 genes involved in this process may provide new insights into insect developmental regulation and potential targets for pe

Sandfly pheromones. Their biology and potential for use in control programs.

Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae) is the vector of Leishmania chagasi the causative agent of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in South and Central America, particularly Brazil, where the greatest incidence occurs. The disease is fatal if untreated. Although huge efforts have been made to control VL the incidence is increasing. Vector control remains an important element of disease control but residual spraying and other strategies have failed to make any lasting impact. Manipulation of sandfly chemical communication offers the opportunity to add new techniques and tools to reduce sandfly

Microbiological Load of Edible Insects Found in Belgium.

Edible insects are gaining more and more attention as a sustainable source of animal protein for food and feed in the future. In Belgium, some insect products can be found on the market, and consumers are sourcing fresh insects from fishing stores or towards traditional markets to find exotic insects that are illegal and not sanitarily controlled. From this perspective, this study aims to characterize the microbial load of edible insects found in Belgium (i.e., fresh mealworms and house crickets from European farms and smoked termites and caterpillars from a traditional Congolese market) and t

Protection of horse ears against Simulid parasitism: Efficacy of a mammal semiochemical solution over 10hours.

Hematophagous insects can be vectors of pathogens and cause significant economic loss in zootechnical production. Among biting insects, many dipteran species feed on horse blood. The black fly (Diptera: Simuliidae) group, is responsible for several disorders in horses and inflicts painful bites that lead to undesirable behaviours in horses, particularly when bites occur in sensitive areas such as the inner ear. A field study was conducted in a French equestrian center during which a semiochemical was applied on horses' ears to assess repellent efficacy against simulid infestation. During the f

Late-acting dominant lethal genetic systems and mosquito control.

BACKGROUND: Reduction or elimination of vector populations will tend to reduce or eliminate transmission of vector-borne diseases. One potential method for environmentally-friendly, species-specific population control is the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT). SIT has not been widely used against insect disease vectors such as mosquitoes, in part because of various practical difficulties in rearing, sterilization and distribution. Additionally, vector populations with strong density-dependent effects will tend to be resistant to SIT-based control as the population-reducing effect of induced steril

Push-pull strategy that combines olfactory and visual cues for management of ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae and Platypodinae) in avocado.

Ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae and Platypodinae) pose a significant threat to avocado production primarily because they serve as vectors for Harringtonia lauricola (T.C. Harr., Fraedrich & Aghayeva) Z.W. de Beer & M. Procter, the fungal pathogen responsible for laurel wilt disease. Unfortunately, effective strategies for managing either the pathogen or its beetle vectors remain limited. To address this challenge, we investigated behavioral manipulation as a potential tool for managing vector populations. First, we assessed the effectiveness of combining visual and olfa

A baited trap for kissing bugs (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae).

Chagas disease is a key vector-borne disease. This illness is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi Chagas, which is transmitted by triatomine bugs. Largely, the control of this disease relies on reducing such contact. We optimized the performance of a box trap in laboratory conditions to capture four triatomine species: Triatoma pallidipennis (Stål), Triatoma infestans Klug, Triatoma phyllosoma (Burmeister), and Rhodnius prolixus Stål. We varied four components for a box trap: material, color, height, and bait attractants. All species were captured more in corrugated cardboard traps than in other trap

The long-term impact of an Ecohealth intervention: Entomological data suggest the interruption of Chagas disease transmission in southeastern Guatemala.

Triatoma dimidiata is the main vector of Chagas disease in southern Mexico, Central America and northern South America. As a native vector, it moves readily among domestic, peri‑domestic and sylvatic environments, making it difficult to control only using insecticide as this requires regular application, and re-infestation frequently occurs. Other social innovation alternatives such as those based on Ecohealth principles can be used to tackle the dynamics of the disease in an integral way. We asked whether an Ecohealth intervention, implemented beginning in 2001 in a highly infested village, 4

Active dispersal of Triatoma infestans and other triatomines in the Argentinean arid Chaco before and after vector control interventions.

Peridomestic structures are considered the main sites where Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) remain and disperse, representing the first risk factor for intradomestic invasion, even after vector control activities. This study analyzed T. infestans dispersal during vector control interventions in six rural houses of the arid Chaco (La Rioja, Argentina). Flying and walking dispersers were captured during five months of two consecutive warm seasons after insecticide spraying of intra- and peridomiciles. These data were compared with previous published data in the same scenario but witho

Preliminary analysis of several attractants and spatial repellents for the mosquito, Aedes albopictus using an olfactometer.

Mosquito attractants and spatial repellents hold great promise in controlling mosquito pests. In assessing the effectiveness of mosquito attractants and repellents, a good olfactometer system, and optimized testing conditions, are essential. In this research, we demonstrated the usefulness of an olfactometer system, and optimized testing conditions for Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae). We found no significant difference in the biting activity of the insect between 8:00 and 22:00. Furthermore, 5-10 day old mosquitoes were relatively strongly attracted, with bloodsucking rate 75.8%. The ran

Application of predictive degree day model for field development of sandfly vectors of visceral leishmaniasis in northwest of Iran.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Temperature plays a significant role in insect's development where a rise in temperature, accelerates the insect's metabolic rates, increases egg production and makes blood feeding more frequent. It also shortens the time period required for the development of pathogens within insects. Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is one of the most important vector-borne diseases transmitted by different sandfly species. In this study, a phenological model was used to estimate the number of generations, peak activity and temporal variability of sandflies in the main VL foci in northwes

[The pyramidal trap for collecting and controlling tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae). Comparative trials and description of new collecting technics].

The pyramidal trap, currently being used in the Congo by the Public Health Service, is between two and five times more efficient than the biconical trap in this country. This is the case in particular for collecting the sleeping sickness vector species Glossina palpalis palpalis and G. fuscips quanzensis. Its simple and robust construction makes this trap ideally suitable for the large scale control of tsetse flies. Its efficiency and ease of transport make it useful for the biologist and the epidemiologist. The authors describe a new collecting technique for killing and preserving flies, that
