Qualitative and quantitative determination of dental amalgam restoration volume.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Volume of tooth structure replaced by an existing restoration, as assessed by visual and radiographic examination, is one diagnostic measure used by dental practitioners and dental insurance agencies to determine the relative need to restore a tooth with a full-coverage cast restoration. However, use of these methods has not been validated. PURPOSE: This study compared the volume of a range of dental amalgam restorations placed in typodont teeth, as estimated by dentists, dental students and laypersons, with the actual volume of each restoration. METHODS AND MATERIAL: S

Regular dental scaling and dementia risk: a nationwide nested case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Dementia is a major public health issue. Emerging evidence suggests that periodontal disease and dental calculus are associated with increased risk of dementia or may serve as potential risk indicators. The role of dental scaling in prevention remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether regular dental scaling is associated with dementia risk across age groups. METHODS: We conducted a nested case-control study using data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database between 2000 and 2019. Cases were individuals with a first-time diagnosis of dementia duri

[Factors related to access to family dentists and regular dental checkups--results of oral health examination of an adult population].

In February 2000, we examined the oral health status of 578 government employees (males 408, females 170). We also asked them to complete questionnaires on oral health. The following results were obtained. Of the total sample, 39.2% had a family dentist. There were significantly more women, and older workers, who had a family dentist. The reasons to visit family dentists were "treatment (75.9%)," "prevention (14.4%)," and "regular checkups (8.8%)." Workers who had family dentists had more filled teeth and fewer present teeth than those without family dentists, and the difference was significan

The public's priorities in health services.

BACKGROUND: Rationing in health services cannot be solved only by cost-effective analysis because social values play a central role in the difficult trade-off dilemma of prioritizing some service over others. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relative importance ascribed by the public to selected components of health services, in the national allocation of resources as well as in their personal insurance. METHODS: A telephone survey of a representative sample of the Israeli adult population (N = 1225). Two versions of the questionnaire were used. At the national level, interviewees were asked to ass

Implications of use of opioid-containing analgesics for palliation of acute dental pain.

BACKGROUND: Initial palliation of acute dental pain with an opioid-containing pain reliever (OPR) is inappropriate but more likely to occur among the under- and uninsured who are unable to access the customary resources for dental care. OBJECTIVE: To assess the implications of palliation with an OPR, the authors determined the prevalence of several health attributes and socioeconomic status (SES) of patients taking prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) palliative medications before they presented to an academically affiliated dental clinic for definitive treatment of acute dental pain. Challenges and resilience of Taiwan's oral health care system after Covid-19 pandemic.

This paper examines the resilience of Taiwan's oral healthcare system in response to COVID-19, focusing on pre-pandemic conditions, pandemic impacts, and policy recommendations for future resilience. In Taiwan, oral diseases were prevalent, with 80.48% of adults affected by periodontitis in 2016, and 65.43% of 5-year-old children experiencing dental caries. Taiwan's National Health Insurance (NHI) covers over 99% of the population, providing comprehensive dental care. The global budget (GB) payment system, implemented in 1998, ensured financial stability. During the pandemic, dental visits in

[Pathogenic situations after orthodontic treatment. Defects in skeleton and soft tissues that should be avoided after orthodontic treatment].

The perfect correction of dental alignment anomalies found in dento facial dysmorphosis should not be the only criterium of success in dento facial orthopedics. One must insure, lest severe T.M.J. disorders and sleep apnea problems subsequently occur, that : (1) the condyles and mandibular vertical branches are correctly positioned relative to the basilar apophysis and cervical vertebrae, (2) the hyoid bone must not descend too low relative to the C3-C4 intervertebral disk.

Once bitten, twice shy? Lessons learned from an experiment to liberalize price regulations for dental care.

In 2012, The Netherlands established the so-called "free market experiment", which allowed providers of dental care to set the prices for their dental services themselves. The introduction of market mechanisms is intended to improve the quality of care and to contribute to cost containment, but increasing health expenditures for citizens have been observed in this context. Using large-volume health insurance claims data and exploiting the 2012 experiment in Dutch dental care, we identified the effects of a liberalization of service prices. Using pooled regression with individual fixed effects,
