UNLABELLED: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection becomes chronic in about 85 % of individuals as demonstrated by the persistence of HCV. It is necessary to treat acute hepatitis C infection. Interferon-alpha is generally used for the treatment of acute HCV infection.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old woman with a history of fatigue and icter was diagnosed as acute hepatitis C virus infection. She was treated with interferon-alpha 2b 3 million unite sc three times in a week and ribavirin 1000 mg daily for 6 months. Within 2 weeks of therapy, the alanine aminotransferase (ALT) had became normal. At

Replication of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) genome within latently infected cells is dependent on the EBV EBNA-1 protein. The objective of this study was to identify transcriptional regulatory proteins that mediate EBNA-1 expression via the viral promoter Qp, which is active in EBV-associated tumors such as Burkitt lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Results of a yeast one-hybrid screen suggested that a subset of the interferon regulatory factor (IRF) family may regulate EBNA-1 transcription by targeting an essential cis-regulatory element of Qp, QRE-2. Further investigation indicated that

Peyronie's disease is an incurable, sexually debilitating fibrotic disease of the penis that results in penile curvature, coital failure, and significant psychological stress for patients and their partners. Appropriate treatment should be individualized and tailored to the patient's goals and expectations, disease history, physical exam findings, and erectile function. While medical treatments exist, there is little evidence to support their use. High-quality data supporting more recent advances in injectable therapies, interferon α-2b and collagenase clostridium histolyticum, show great prom

Regional Metastatic Melanoma has a relatively high mortality rate. Adjuvant interferon-alpha (IFN-α) has been shown to improve disease-free survival, post-resection. Cardiotoxicity associated with IFN-α use has been described previously in the literature, but here we describe the first case of pericardial effusion with cardiac tamponade secondary to IFN-α 2b treatment of melanoma. Clinicians should be aware of this potentially lethal complication and the possible acuity of its onset.

BACKGROUND: Despite adequate surgery, a diagnosis of stage III melanoma carries a high risk of relapse, and hence mortality. Interferon alfa is the only treatment that has currently been shown to alter the natural history of the disease, delaying relapse-free survival, particularly in patients with micrometastatic disease. There is also recent evidence of a prognostic advantage conferred by the development of autoimmune conditions in patients receiving adjuvant interferon therapy.
OBSERVATIONS: We present the case of a 27-year-old woman with stage IIIa melanoma who was entered into the Europe

Behçet's disease (BD) is a multisystemic disease of unknown etiopathogenesis with various clinical features including manifestations from central nervous system involvement. We report the case of a patient presented with a 20-year history of BD and a 10-year history of epileptic seizures refractory to various antiepileptic drugs. Under systemic treatment with interferon-alpha 2a (IFN-alpha) a complete remission of the cutaneous manifestations and a seizure-free state were achieved. The impressive therapeutic response of both the seizures and the non-neurological manifestations to IFN-alpha was

Acute infection due to hepatitis C virus results in a chronic progression in 50-84% of cases. In the light of the risk of developing chronic disease and the response rate to treatment once the disease is established, it is very important to consider early treatment of acute hepatitis C before it progresses to the chronic form. The aim of this review is to evaluate the real efficacy and tolerance of Peg-interferon alpha-2b in monotherapy and in association with ribavirin in the treatment of patients affected by acute C hepatitis, to delineate the viral factors correlated with the sustained viro…

The therapeutic efficacy of recombinant interferon-alpha (rIFN-alpha) has been evaluated in 7 patients with polycythaemia vera (PV), diagnosed according to the criteria of the Polycythemia Vera Study Group. Six complete responses and one partial response were achieved. Pruritus significantly improved in 80% (4/5) of the cases. Recombinant interferon-alpha had to be discontinued in 1 patient because of grade 3-4 nephrotoxicity according to WHO criteria. rIFN-alpha therapy significantly decreased the phlebotomy requirements and improved the mean corpuscular volume, erythrocyte and platelet count

Five of 10 patients receiving long-term recombinant interferon alpha-2b therapy complained of considerable hair loss. The pull test and the trichogram showed a telogen count consistent with a telogen effluvium. In 2 patients the telogen count progressively improved despite continuing the treatment, whereas in 3 patients the trichogram continued to show an increased telogen count until interferon therapy was discontinued. Pohl-Pinkus hair constrictions were also present in 2 patients.

We treated 114 Ph'+ chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients, 105 of whom were in chronic phase (CP) and 9 in accelerated phase (AP), with interferon alpha-2b (IFN alpha-2b) at intermittent or daily doses of 2-5 MU/m2. Of 35 previously untreated CP patients, 22 (63%) showed complete hematological response (CHR). This was significantly influenced by initial risk status. In 19 of the 22 CHR patients the median of Ph'+ cells decreased from 100% to 58%. Of 36 patients pretreated for less than 12 months, 19 (53%) achieved CHR. CHR rate was significantly related to IFN dose. Cytogenetic improvement w…

To assess the efficacy of therapy with the antiviral agent interferon in chronic hepatitis C (non-A, non-B hepatitis), we randomly assigned 166 chronic hepatitis C patients to treatment with either 3 million or 1 million units of recombinant interferon alfa-2b three times weekly for 24 weeks, or to no treatment. The probability of normalization or near normalization of the serum alanine aminotransferase levels after 6 months of interferon therapy was 46% in patients treated with 3 million units of interferon (p less than 0.001) and 28% in those treated with 1 million units (p less than 0.02),

Aggressive and chronic disfiguring large penile warts, where previous treatment had been unsuccessful, were flattened in a non-immunocompromised patient treated with interferon alpha-2b 5 x 10(6) I.U. subcutaneously three times a week. Cessation of therapy resulted in rapid recurrence of lesions, indicating persistence of the viral infection. Systemic interferon therapy, however, was the only remedy that could suppress the disease. Only transient and mild systemic toxicity was observed. Subcutaneously injected interferon alpha-2b should be considered in patients with otherwise therapy resistan…

OBJECTIVE: Treatment with recombinant interferon is associated with high rates of psychiatric comorbidity. We investigated the relation between catabolism of the essential amino acid tryptophan, being rate-limiting of peripheral and cerebral serotonin formation, and psychiatric symptoms in patients undergoing combination treatment with interferon-alpha and ribavirin.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eighteen patients with viral hepatitis C who received interferon were included. A psychiatrist screened patients before and while on interferon-alpha treatment for 2 months, using a structured diagnostic int

Muscle biopsies from nine patients with polymyositis, six with muscular dystrophy, six with other muscle diseases and three controls have been studied with a panel of 10 monoclonal antibodies (MoAb) identifying T lymphocytes, HLA-class I antigens, alpha, beta and gamma interferons and interleukin 2 (IL-2). The result confirm that the staining of the sarcolemma with anti-HLA class I antibody is weak or negative, except in areas adjacent to infiltrating leucocytes or where muscle fibre damage is evident. The very similar tissue distribution of alpha, beta and gamma interferons in the polymyositi
