The Role of Enablement Theory in Rehabilitation Practice, Education, and Research.

Enablement theory refers to the theoretical framework that describes the interrelationships among different areas of functioning, such as those illustrated by the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF). Enablement theory is necessary to explain causal relationships and predictions of how changes in one aspect of function impact distal outcomes. This is in contrast with treatment theory, which describes how the active ingredient(s) of an intervention directly impact a measurable target. Enablement theory helps clinicians articulate their rehabilitation treatme

ICF domains covered by the Tinnitus Questionnaire and Tinnitus Functional Index.

PURPOSE: Tinnitus frequently causes disability as it affects daily living, which is objectified using several tinnitus questionnaires. To what extent they cover domains of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) is currently unknown. Therefore, this study aims to investigate which ICF domains are measured by two questionnaires and to describe the health status of somatic tinnitus patients in ICF terms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All questions of the Tinnitus Questionnaire (TQ) and Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI) were linked to the ICF using linking rules. A co…

Goal analysis in patients with limb spasticity treated with incobotulinumtoxinA in the TOWER study.

PURPOSE: To map spasticity-related goals using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) linking rules, and review goal syntax to direct future goal setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 1633 treatment goals, set during the TOWER study, were linked to the ICF framework and EQ-5D domains. Goals were mapped independently by two investigators with expertise in ICF linking rules. RESULTS: In total, 1630 (99.8%) goals could be mapped to the ICF (inter-rater agreement on the main ICF category 96.1%). Most goals (80.2%) were mapped to a single ICF category and were rela…

From congenial paralysis to post-early brain injury developmental condition: Where does cerebral palsy actually stand?

Cerebral palsy (CP), an umbrella term for a developmental motor disorder caused by early brain injury (EBI)/interference, remains debated. In this essay, we present a narrative, beginning with the original anatomical-clinical description of the so-called paralysie congéniale (congenial paralysis) by the French psychiatrist Jean-Baptiste Cazauvieilh. We then discuss how the concept has evolved over the last 2 centuries. We aim to illustrate these ideas with the biopsychosocial model of health, especially in light of the current neuroscientific and sociological knowledge of human development. We

Rethinking Disability Assessment in Italy: Innovations and Challenges in the Medico-Legal Perspective of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

The recent reform of the Italian civil disability assessment system has introduced a new integrated evaluation framework grounded in the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), and the WHO Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS 2.0). This person-centered, context-sensitive model aims to transcend the limitations of a purely clinical evaluation. However, adopting new instruments and criteria presents significant challenges, particularly in medico-legal settings. This paper, through a narrative analysis of the …

[Implementation of the ICD-ICF model in rehabilitation medicine: report of a clinical case in rehabilitative cardiology].

This patient entered a Cardiac Rehabilitation Program after coronary artery bypass graft. Concomitant diseases and the degree of disability have been coded according to International Classification of Functioning (ICF). Rehabilitation multidisciplinary program has been started (physician, nurses, physiotherapist and nutritionist); atrial fibrillation, anaemia, pleural effusion, surgical wounds inflammation were treated. Educational program allowed a better knowledge of the diseases the patient is bearing; low functional capability diagnosed at admittance improved thanks to the coordinated inte

Scoping review to develop common data elements for lumbar spinal stenosis.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Common data elements (CDE) represent an important tool for understanding and classifying health outcomes across settings. Although CDEs have been developed for a number of disorders, to date CDEs for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) have not been fully developed. To facilitate the identification of CDEs and measures to assess them, this technical study leverages the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), peer-reviewed research, and a panel of experts to identify CDEs specific to LSS. PURPOSE: The study aimed to define CDEs for disease charact…

Factors associated with physical activity among young adults with a disability.

The purpose of this study was to examine: (1) total physical activity and (2) the relative importance of functioning and disability, environmental and personal factors for total physical activity among young adults with a disability. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health developed by the World Health Organization was used as a structural framework for a cross-sectional survey, based on a questionnaire. The population studied was 327 young adults (age 18-30) with a disability who were members of interest organizations for persons with disabilities. Using an adap…

The effectiveness of play as an intervention using International Classification of Functioning outcome measures for children with disabilities - a systematic review and meta-synthesis.

PURPOSE: Over 240 million children worldwide experience inequities due to disablement/disability. Play is important for children's global development, to enable participation in life, and has been used in therapeutic settings. The purpose of this systematic review is to determine the effectiveness of play used in therapy for children with disabilities, to explore ways that play is used in therapy, and to classify and map outcome measures used in play-based interventions to the International Classification of Functioning. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted following the Preferred Repor

Towards an ICF-based self-report questionnaire for people with skeletal dysplasia to study health, functioning, disability and accessibility.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the spectrum of everyday challenges that people with skeletal dysplasia face because of their health and functioning. We aimed to identify factors related to health, functioning and disability in people with skeletal dysplasia, and their challenges with accessibility in order to form a self-reported questionnaire for national data collection. The comprehensive musculoskeletal post-acute core set of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) was used as a framework. METHODS: An iterative, participatory and qualitative process …

Communicative participation of school-aged children with cochlear implants: parental perceptions.

This qualitative study aimed to explore parents' perceptions regarding the communication of their school-aged child with cochlear implants (CIs) in various social contexts. To this end, the construct of "communicative participation" (World Health Organization (2001), International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health, https://www.who.int/standards/classifications/international-classification-of-functioning-disability-and-health) was broadly applied to the population of children with CIs. Nineteen parents participated in semi-structured interviews and described their perception

The dystonic child treated with deep brain stimulation: ICF reading of a high-tech approach.

PURPOSE: The available tools used to describe childhood dystonia tend to offer a monodimensional view of the person functioning, which may overlook significant changes induced by treatment. METHOD: An 8-year-old child with secondary dystonia was selected within the institutional program for advanced treatment of pediatric dystonia …

Functioning Problems in Persons with Schizophrenia in the Russian Context.

Assessing functionality in schizophrenia from a biopsychosocial perspective is essential to generate treatments that respond to the needs of the individual in his/her context. This research aims to assess the prevalence of functioning problems and their association with socio-demographic and clinical variables in a sample of Russian individuals with schizophrenia, using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health as a framework. An empirical cross-sectional study assessed the functioning of 40 individuals with schizophrenia using the International Classification of
