Visceral fat increase and signals of inflammation in adipose tissue after administration of titanium dioxide nanoparticles in mice.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NP) are present in several daily use products, and the risks associated with their bioaccumulation must be stablished. Thus, an evaluation of several toxicological-related effects was conducted after intraperitoneal injection of TiO2 NPs in mice. Mice were divided into two groups, which received 2 mg kg-1 day-1 of TiO2 NPs or vehicle saline. Assessments of body and organ weight as well as biochemical, hematological, and histopathological analyses were performed in order to evaluate adverse effects. The results showed that treatment resulted in an increased

The metabolic syndrome: common origins of a multifactorial disorder.

The metabolic syndrome (MetS) represents a combination of cardiometabolic risk determinants including obesity (central adiposity), insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, dyslipidaemia, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and hypertension. MetS is rapidly increasing in prevalence worldwide as a consequence of the continued obesity "epidemic", and as a result will have a considerable impact on the global incidence of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Currently, there is debate concerning whether the risk of cardiovascular disease is greater in patients diagnosed with MetS than that of

[Carbohydrate metabolism and aging-controversy of ethiopathogenesis and pathophysiology. Part II. Changes in beta-cell function].

Many studies suggest the decrease of beta-cell function in people older than 60 years. Age-associated defect of beta-cell function can be detected in loading tests, especially with prolonged intravenous infusion glucose infusion. Pathogenetic mechanisms consist abnormalities in insulin processing, insulin secretion, insulin release kinetics with parallel lower insulin secretion capacity and impossibility of increasing insulin release properly to age-increasing insulin resistance. These pathogenetic changes are related to increase of visceral fat deposits and other mechanisms such as defects in

Association of fat density with subclinical atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Ectopic fat density is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors above and beyond fat volume. Volumetric measures of ectopic fat have been associated with CVD risk factors and subclinical atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between fat density and subclinical atherosclerosis. METHODS AND RESULTS: Participants were drawn from the Multi-Detector Computed Tomography (MDCT) substudy of the Framingham Heart Study (n=3079; mean age, 50.1 years; 49.2% women). Fat density was indirectly estimated by computed tomography attenuation (Hou

Combined exercise training and dietary interventions versus independent effect of exercise on ectopic fat in individuals with overweight and obesity: a systematic review, meta-analysis, and meta-regression.

AIM: While it is well established that reducing ectopic fat can help prevent insulin resistance in individuals with overweight or obesity, it remains unclear whether diet alone, exercise alone, or their combination is most effective in reducing specific ectopic fat depots. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the effects of diet-only, and combined diet-plus-exercise interventions versus exercise only on ectopic fat reduction, and weight loss in adults with overweight or obesity. METHODS: Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus were searched for original articles, published unt

High visceral fat-to-muscle ratio is an independent factor that predicts worse overall survival in patients with primary epithelial ovarian, fallopian tube, and peritoneal cancer.

BACKGROUND: The intra-abdominal cavity, surrounded by adipocytes, is the main metastatic site of epithelial ovarian, fallopian tube, and peritoneal cancer. Epidemiological and molecular studies have demonstrated a link between adipose tissue and ovarian cancer. However, the clinical significance of fatty tissue has not been elucidated. Thus, we investigated the clinical significance of body composition in patients with epithelial ovarian, fallopian tube, and peritoneal cancer. METHODS: Fat and skeletal muscle areas were measured using software based on pretreatment computed tomography scans a

Ramadan intermittent fasting reduces visceral fat and improves gastrointestinal motility.

BACKGROUND: Ramadan is a model of intermittent fasting linked with possible beneficial effects. Scarce information, however, is available about the combined effects of Ramadan intermittent fasting (RIF) on anthropometric and metabolic indices, gastrointestinal symptoms, and motility. METHODS: In 21 healthy Muslims, we assessed the impact of RIF on caloric intake, physical activity, gastrointestinal symptoms and motility (gastric/gallbladder emptying by ultrasonography, orocaecal transit time by lactulose breath test), anthropometric indices, subcutaneous and visceral fat thickness (ultrasonog

Presence of human adenovirus 36 in visceral fat tissue, viral load, and analysis of its genetic variability.

It has been proposed that infection by adipogenic viruses constitutes a "low risk" factor for obesity. Here, we report the presence of adenovirus 36 (Ad36) and its viral load copy number in fat tissue of participants with obesity and normal weight; phylogenetic analysis was performed to describe their relationship and genetic variability among viral haplotypes. Adipose tissue obtained from 105 adult patients with obesity (cases) and 26 normal-weight adult participants as controls were analyzed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) amplifying the partial Ad36 E1a gene. The amplicons

Neck Circumference for NAFLD Assessment during a 2-Year Nutritional Intervention: The FLiO Study.

Neck circumference (NC) and its relationship to height (NHtR) and weight (NWtR) appear to be good candidates for the non-invasive management of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This study aimed to evaluate the ability of routine variables to assess and manage NAFLD in 98 obese subjects with NAFLD included in a 2-year nutritional intervention program. Different measurements were performed at baseline, 6, 12 and 24 months. The nutritional intervention significantly improved the anthropometric, metabolic and imaging variables. NC was significantly associated with the steatosis degree at

Assessment of visceral and subcutaneous obesity to understand the efficiency of adipose tissue in acute pancreatitis.

BACKGROUND: Fat accumulation in the visceral and subcutaneous regions can trigger fat necrosis during acute pancreatitis (AP). AIMS: We investigated the role of visceral and subcutaneous fat in acute pancreatitis. In this study, we investigated the role of visceral and subcutaneous fat to understand the efficiency of adipose tissue in the AP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Computed tomography of 68 patients and 68 healthy at the level of L4-5 intervertebral disc were analyzed for body adiposity composition using designated software. Body subcutaneous and visceral composition was measured by using th

Risk for metabolic syndrome in the population with visceral fat area measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To investigate whether visceral fat area (VFA) measured by bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) was associated with metabolic syndrome in subjects with and without obesity. METHODS: A total 23,202 participants who underwent medical check-ups were assessed. Participants were stratified by body mass index (BMI) and VFA. We evaluated six different groups for metabolic syndrome: Group 1 (normal weight and low VFA), Group 2 (normal weight and high VFA), Group 3 (overweight and low VFA), Group 4 (overweight and high VFA), Group 5 (obesity and low VFA), and Group 6 (obesity and high

Obesity and visceral fat: Survival impact in high-grade endometrial cancer.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is an important risk factor for the development of endometrial cancer (EC). Recent data showed that body fat distribution might be more relevant than Body Mass Index (BMI). High visceral fat percentage was shown to be an independent predictor for survival in EC, but mainly included grade 1-2 EC. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate body fat distribution and its relation to outcome in high-grade endometrial cancer. METHODS: Retrospective study in women diagnosed with high-grade EC between February 2006 and August 2017 at the Royal Cornwall Hospital who had abdominal CT-scan as part of r

Obesity and Androgens in Women.

Androgen excess is often associated with obesity states, at any age of life, because of changes in the pattern of secretion or metabolism of androgens and in their actions at the level of target tissues, particularly the adipose tissue. Androgen excess plays an important role in favouring the expansion of visceral fat, which characterize so-called visceral obesity. Moreover, there is evidence that the combination of androgen excess and obesity may favour the development of metabolic disorders, such as the metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. In obese adolescent girls, androgen excess may al

Decreased Serum Adiponectin Level during Catecholamine Crisis in an Obese Patient with Pheochromocytoma.

We herein report the case of a 37-year-old man with both pheochromocytoma and visceral fat accumulation and describe the sequential changes in his adiponectin levels throughout the clinical course from catecholamine crisis until the follow-up for adrenalectomy. His adiponectin level decreased during catecholamine crisis and increased after adrenalectomy. However, his adiponectin level decreased again at two years postoperatively when his visceral fat area greatly increased. This case suggests that catecholamines and visceral fat volume may affect adiponectin metabolism in subjects with pheochr

Occult Massive Visceral Fat Necrosis Following Therapeutic Hypothermia for Neonatal Encephalopathy.

Therapeutic hypothermia (head or whole-body cooling) improves survival and neurodevelopmental outcome in term newborns with moderate-to-severe encephalopathy. Hypothermia treatment is well tolerated; the most common side effect is thrombocytopenia. In about 1% of infants, focal subcutaneous fat necrosis has been reported. We describe a case of clinically unsuspected massive visceral fat necrosis in a term infant with Apgar score 0 at 1 min ("resuscitated apparently stillborn" infant) who was treated with therapeutic hypothermia for 72 h and expired on the 25th day of life following a neonatal

Characterization and therapeutic application of canine adipose mesenchymal stem cells to treat elbow osteoarthritis.

Visceral adipose tissue (AT) obtained from surgical waste during routine ovariectomies was used as a source for isolating canine mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). As determined by cytofluorimetry, passage 2 cells expressed MSC markers CD44 and CD90 and were negative for lineage-specific markers CD34 and CD45. The cells differentiated toward osteogenic, adipogenic, and chondrogenic directions. With therapeutic aims, 30 dogs (39 joints) suffering from elbow dysplasia (ED) and osteoarthritis (OA) were intra-articularly transplanted with allogeneic MSCs suspended in 0.5% hyaluronic acid (HA). A history of cranial radiotherapy is associated with a higher visceral to subcutaneous fat ratio in men with pituitary insufficiency.

OBJECTIVE: Endocrine deficiencies, like GH and estrogen deficiencies, are likely candidates to explain increased visceral to subcutaneous fat ratio in patients with pituitary insufficiency. However, recent reports pointed to cranial radiotherapy (CRT) as an additional determinant of an unfavorable fat distribution. Therefore, we determined the effect of CRT on abdominal fat distribution in men with treated pituitary insufficiency. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: Thirty-five consecutive male subjects (16 men with and 19 men without CRT aged 62±12 and 56±14 years respectively, P=0.175)
