Administration of Inulin-Supplemented Gluten-Free Diet Modified Calcium Absorption and Caecal Microbiota in Rats in a Calcium-Dependent Manner.

In coeliac disease (CD), the risk of adverse calcium balance and reduced bone density is induced mainly by the disease, but also by a gluten-free diet (GFD), the only accepted CD therapy. Prebiotics through the beneficial impact on intestinal microbiota may stimulate calcium (Ca) absorption. In the present study, we hypothesised that the dietary inulin in GFD would influence positively the intestinal microbiota, and by that will stimulate the absorption of calcium (Ca), especially in the conditions of Ca malnutrition. In a six-weeks nutritional experiment on growing a significant (p < 0.05) lu…

Dietary inulin affects the expression of intestinal enterocyte iron transporters, receptors and storage protein and alters the microbiota in the pig intestine.

Inulin, a linear beta fructan, is present in a variety of plants including chicory root and wheat. It exhibits prebiotic properties and has been shown to enhance mineral absorption and increase beneficial bacteria in the colon. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of dietary inulin on the gene expression of selected intestinal Fe transporters and binding proteins. Anaemic piglets at age 5 weeks were allocated to a standard maize-soya diet (control) or the same diet supplemented with inulin at a level of 4 %. After 6 weeks, the animals were killed and caecum contents and sectio…

pH-responsive alginate-inulin composite hydrogels incorporating pollen exine capsules for oral protein delivery: Structural characterization and controlled release mechanism.

Proteases are readily inactivated in the gastrointestinal tract, which severely limits their oral delivery. In this study, a pH-responsive composite hydrogel system was developed by embedding papain-loaded Nelumbo nucifera sporopollenin exine capsules (PNSECs) within a sodium alginate-inulin-Al3+ matrix to form PNSECs-SAI. Optimized loading yielded an enzyme activity retention of 56.12%. Structural characterization, swelling behavior, and release analyses indicated that the composite matrix remained relatively compact under acidic conditions but underwent pronounced swelling and structural loo…

Mechanistic Study of Inulin in Ameliorating Heat Stroke-Induced Intestinal Barrier Damage via Modulation of Gut Microbiota- Butyrate-GPR43 Axis.

This study investigated how the prebiotic inulin protects against heat-stroke-induced intestinal barrier damage. A classic/passive heat-stroke model was established in C57BL/6J mice. After 4 weeks of dietary intervention with 5% inulin, gut microbiota, fecal short-chain fatty acids, intestinal barrier function, and signaling pathways were examined using 16S rRNA sequencing, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, Western blotting, and cell models. Inulin decreased the core body temperature and mortality, reshaped the gut microbiota, and increased Bifidobacterium abundance and fecal butyrate. But…

An inulin from Asparagus cochinchinensis relieves slow transit constipation associated with Akkermansia muciniphila enrichment, kynurenic acid restoration, and NLRP3 attenuation.

Slow transit constipation (STC) involves impaired colonic motility, and effective therapies remain limited. Inulin-type fructans (ITFs) are prebiotic polysaccharides linked to intestinal function, but mixtures with broad chain-length distributions hinder structure-function interpretation. In this study, we adopted a degree of polymerization (DP)-anchored strategy to compare two structurally related ITFs from Asparagus cochinchinensis: ACO (DP = 6) and ACNP (DP = 15). In a loperamide (LOP)-induced STC model, ACNP, but not ACO, improved fecal output and water content, shortened the time to first…

Inulin alleviates adverse metabolic syndrome and regulates intestinal microbiota composition in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fed with high-carbohydrate diet.

A high-carbohydrate diet could achieve a protein-sparing effect, but it may cause negative impacts on the growth condition of fish due to their poor utilisation ability of carbohydrate. How to reduce the adverse effects caused by a high-carbohydrate diet is important for the development of aquaculture. In the present study, we aimed to identify whether inulin could attenuate the metabolic syndrome caused by a high-carbohydrate diet in fish. Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) (1·19 (sd 0·01) g) were supplied with 35 % carbohydrate (CON), 45 % carbohydrate (HC) and 45 % carbohydrate + 5 g/kg i…

Effects of whey protein-inulin conjugates with varying degrees of glycosylation on hepatic antioxidant capacity, immunomodulation and gut microbiota in mice.

In this study, whey protein isolate-inulin (WPI-In) conjugates with varying degrees of glycosylation (DG) were prepared, characterized, and examined for their potential immunomodulatory effects and regulation of gut microbiota in mice. The data indicated that an increase in DG significantly affects the microstructure and functionalities of WPI-In conjugates. The WPI-In conjugates with high DG promoted the growth and development of the thymus while altering gut microbiota composition by increasing the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes and reducing that of Firmicutes. Additionally, the WPI-In …

Intervention with inulin prior to and during sanative therapy to further support periodontal health: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease is a chronic state of inflammation that can destroy the supporting tissues around the teeth, leading to the resorption of alveolar bone. The initial strategy for treating periodontal disease is non-surgical sanative therapy (ST). Periodontal disease can also induce dysbiosis in the gut microbiota and contribute to low-grade systemic inflammation. Prebiotic fibers such as inulin can selectively alter the intestinal microbiota and support homeostasis by improving gut barrier functions and preventing inflammation. Providing an inulin supplement prior to and post-ST…

Effect of inulin supplementation on selected gastric, duodenal, and caecal microbiota and short chain fatty acid pattern in growing piglets.

We explored whether bifidobacteria and lactobacilli numbers and other selected bacteria in the upper intestine and the caecum of growing pigs were affected by diet and intake of inulin. Starting at two weeks after weaning (28 d) 72 pigs were fed two types of diets (wheat/barley (WB) or maize/gluten (MG)), without or with 3% inulin (WB + I, MG + I) for three and six weeks. Intestinal bacteria were quantified by fluorescence-in-situ-hybridization (n = 8/group). Duration of feeding had no effect on the variables tested, so data for both periods were pooled. Gastric total bacteria amounted to log(…

Dietary inulin mediates the molecular mechanism of intestinal metabolites to alleviate high salt diet-induced chronic kidney disease in mice.

It is recognized that excessive dietary salt intake is a critical factor contributing to chronic kidney disease (CKD). A high-salt diet (HSD) disrupts the balance of the gut microbiota, but the molecular mechanisms linking gut dysbiosis to target organ damage remain unclear. This study identified dietary prebiotic inulin (INU) as a potent regulator of the gut-short-chain fatty acid-kidney axis, capable of counteracting HSD-induced CKD. Sequencing analysis showed that INU selectively enriched Bifidobacterium and Faecalibaculum while downregulating Desulfovibrio. This microbiome shift restored i…
