Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) has the potential to improve survival in patients with intermediate stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) is one of the established therapeutic modalities for treatment of metastatic liver cancer originating in the gastrointestinal tract. However, TACE is seldomly applied to metastatic liver cancer from gynecological regions. We present two cases of multiple liver metastases of uterine cervical cancer, treated with TACE using cisplatin 60 mg/m2, etoposide 200 mg/m2 and lipiodol. In both cases, hepatomegaly was markedly reduced, tumor-markers dropped to within or close to the normal range, and subjective symptoms disappeared. No serious complications

Two cases with unresectable hepatoblastoma were treated by intrahepatic arterial injections of cisplatin-phosphatidylcholine-Lipiodol suspension (CPLS), combined with systemic chemotherapy. In the Southern Highlands of Tanzania the prevalence of endemic goitre due to iodine deficiency is in the range of 90% and hypothyroidism in the range of 50% of schoolchildren. The present study confirms these data and documents the beneficial effect of Lipiodol injections on thyroid function in children around the age of puberty compared with untreated children from the same villages. On the other hand, a decrease in the prevalence of goitre could not be shown. A beneficial effect is shown for infants of mothers who received iodine during pregnancy. In endemic goiter patients living in a chronic iodide deficiency area (less than 50ug/day) TSH basal levels and the TSH response to TRH is significantly higher (31 +/- 8uU/ml) than in normal controls (10 +/- 4uU/ml). There is a negative correlation between levels of iodine intake and serum TSH concentration and thyrotropin is thus increased when iodine decreased. BACKGROUND: A persistent sciatic artery is a rare congenital anomaly, and an arteriovenous malformation arising on persistent sciatic vessels is extremely rare.
METHODS: This report presents the case of a 30-year-old female with persistent sciatic vessels complicated with an arteriovenous malformation in the right buttock. It was surgically inaccessible, and a three-staged transcatheter embolization using 20% N-butyl-cyanoacrylate/80% lipiodol was performed.
RESULTS: The arteriovenous malformation was shown to have been extinguished by multidetector computed tomography.
