Trials of immunization against Leishmania tropica were initiated in the Israel Defense Forces in 1968. The rate of takes has declined gradually over the years. In 1975, 425 soldiers were inoculated with the same strain of L. tropica as that used since 1968; they were examined at three- and six-month intervals after the inoculation, with 291 soldiers undergoing at least one follow-up examination. We present an autochthonous Histoplasma infection in Israel. The patient presented with hoarseness and weight loss. Pathology findings and molecular tests confirmed the diagnosis, and the patient responded to antifungal therapy. Because the patient had an atypical presentation of histoplasmosis, it is likely that other more typical cases have gone unreported. To our knowledge, no other cases have been previously reported from Israel or the Middle East region.

Between 1971 and 1992, 42 children (median age = 2 years) with histologically proven Wilms' tumor were evaluated at the Northern Israel Oncology Institute. Most patients were staged according to National Wilms' Tumor Study (NWTS) criteria by which 18 were clinical stage I-II and 24 were III-IV. In the framework of an epidemiologic study we collected data on all the 162 patients with achalasia in central Israel. The mean (+/- SD) follow-up was 9.9 +/- 8.7 years (range 1-52). Presented are the pathologic findings in familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (FHLH), based on observation of 11 cases from four affected families. The outstanding morphologic feature was a multiorgan involvement with lymphohistiocytic cellular infiltrates. The organs most frequently affected were the bone marrow and lymph nodes and, less frequently, the liver and the brain. The histiocytes in the infiltrates were usually bland and displayed prominent hemophagocytosis. We report a case of human gnathostomiasis presenting with bilateral pleural effusion and probable pericardial involvement. The diagnosis was made on the basis of the patient's country of origin (Nepal), the course of the disease, marked eosinophilia and the identification of Gnathostoma in a thoracic skin biopsy. The patient responded, presumably, to treatment with diethylcarbamazine (Hetrazan). This case is unique in its presentation and occurrence in Israel (although not necessarily acquired in Israel).

We assessed the prevalence of suspected skin lesions among beachgoers with dermatoscopy and evaluated their compliance with recommendations. This was conducted as a screening activity at a beach in central Israel. A dermatoscopy specialist evaluated beachgoers and maintained follow-up with them to ascertain compliance with recommendations. In all, 296 participants were screened.
