Blood culture positivity and its clinical determinants among hospitalized male patients with newly diagnosed, laboratory-confirmed brucellosis: a hospital-based retrospective study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Brucellosis is a common zoonotic disease worldwide. Because its symptoms are non-specific and laboratory findings vary, diagnosis remains challenging. Blood culture is still the gold standard for confirmation, but its yield is often limited. This study aimed to estimate blood-culture positivity among hospitalized male patients with newly diagnosed brucellosis and to identify clinical and laboratory factors independently associated with culture positivity within confirmed cases. METHODS: We conducted a hospital-based retrospective study of 1,188 hospitalized men with

Circulating immune complexes in the general hospital population and in patients who have renal disease. A preliminary evaluation of the platelet aggregation test for use in the hospital laboratory.

The platelet aggregation test was used to measure circulating immune complexes in patients who had glomerulonephritis and autoimmune disease, and in unselected hospitalized patients. Titers higher than those for the control group were found for groups with acute glomerulonephritis, Berger's disease, renal transplants, lupus nephritis, and polyarteritis nodosa. Hospitalized patients had titers that were higher than normal in more than one out of five cases. This preliminary study showed that the platelet aggregation test detects immune complexes in many conditions previously reported to give po

Laboratory-based syphilis lateral flow immunoassay testing for maternity care at Alice Springs Hospital: a pilot study.

Congenital syphilis is a preventable yet severe condition resulting from untreated maternal syphilis. Since 2016, Australia has recorded over 95 congenital syphilis cases, with 31/95 (33%) associated with perinatal death. Syphilis serology is complex and therefore performed in designated central laboratories. In the Northern Territory, specimen transport times associated with vast geographic distances lead to delayed results in remote regions. This study evaluates the introduction of the Abbott Determine™ Syphilis TP lateral flow immunoassay (LFI) at Alice Springs Hospital (ASH) to reduce turn
