During pregnancy and lactation, female physiology adapts to meet the added nutritional demands of fetuses and neonates. An average full-term fetus contains ∼30 g calcium, 20 g phosphorus, and 0.8 g magnesium. About 80% of mineral is accreted during the third trimester; calcium transfers at 300-350 mg/day during the final 6 wk. The neonate requires 200 mg calcium daily from milk during the first 6 mo, and 120 mg calcium from milk during the second 6 mo (additional calcium comes from solid foods). Calcium transfers can be more than double and triple these values, respectively, in women who nurse

All mammals are provided with two distinct adipose cells, white and brown adipocytes. White adipocytes store lipids to provide fuel to the organism, allowing intervals between meals. Brown adipocytes use lipids to produce heat. Previous descriptions have implied their localization in distinct sites of the body; however, it has been demonstrated that they are present together in many depots, which has led to the new concept of the adipose organ. In order to explain their coexistence the hypothesis of reversible physiological transdifferentiation has been developed, i.e. they are contained toget

In a cross-sectional study, performed between October 2002 and April 2003 on 55 Danish dairy herds with 6161 predominantly Holstein Friesian cows the prevalence of 9 hoof lesions was determined. All test-day yields (TDY) of kg energy corrected milk (ECM) in the lactation of diagnosis were recorded. For the purpose of including hoof lesions in a decision support model an attempt was made to aggregate the lesions into digital dermatitis (DD), other interdigital diseases (OID, infectious diseases other than DD) and hoof horn diseases (HHD, related to metabolic disorders and trauma). A division wa

Lameness, one of the most important disorders in the dairy industry, is related to postpartum diseases and has an effect on dairy cow welfare, leading to changes in cows' daily behavioral variables. This study quantified the effect of lameness on the daily time budget of dairy cows in the transition period. In total, 784 multiparous dairy cows from 8 commercial Dutch dairy farms were visually scored on their locomotion (score of 1-5) and body condition (score of 1-5). Each cow was scored in the early and late dry period as well as in wk 4 and 8 postpartum. Cows with locomotion scores 1 and 2 w

Most dairy cows experience negative energy balance (NEB) in early lactation because energy demand for milk synthesis is not met by energy intake. Excessive NEB may lead to metabolic disorders and impaired fertility. To optimize herd management, it is useful to detect cows in NEB in early lactation, but direct calculation of NEB is not feasible in commercial herds. Alternative methods rely on fat-to-protein ratio in milk or on concentrations of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) in blood. Here, we considered methods to assess energy balance (EB) of dairy cows based on

The effects of reproductive technologies, namely, artificial insemination (AI) and multiple ovulation embryo transfer (MOET), on the production, health, and longevity of Holstein-Friesian cows were evaluated. Data were obtained from the time period between 2017 and 2024 on a Hungarian dairy farm and consisted of 1783 cows (1544 AI and 239 MOET). Deep-frozen semen from identical bulls was used for both the AI and MOET groups. Disease incidence, productive life, and early-lactation milk production phenotypes were collected in these cows. MOET cows demonstrated significantly higher milk yield dur

BACKGROUND: Magnesium sulfate is widely prescribed postpartum for seizure prophylaxis in women with preeclampsia and other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, yet its potential effects on lactation outcomes remain underexplored.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and synthesize the current evidence on how postpartum magnesium sulfate therapy affects lactation outcomes, including breastfeeding initiation, exclusivity, duration, pumping habits, and secretory activation (SA).
METHODS: This integrative review followed PRISMA guidelines and Whittemore and Knafl's framework. Literature was obtained from fiv

Dairy cows commonly experience an unbalanced energy status in early lactation, and this condition can lead to the onset of several metabolic disorders. Blood metabolic profile testing is a valid tool to monitor and detect the most common early lactation disorders, but blood sampling and analysis are time-consuming and expensive, and the procedure is invasive and stressful for the cows. Mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy is routinely used to analyze milk composition, being a cost-effective and nondestructive method. The present study aimed to assess the feasibility of using routine milk MIR spectr…

The relationship between different variables was studied related to pregnancy, labor, puerperium, newborn and breast-feeding with the development of a depressive disorders during pregnancy, in a sample of 125 pregnant women. No relationship it's found with the presence of disease during the gestation period, except urinary tract infection. The same happens with other variable of labor, puerperium and newborn, Nevertheless, the major stress situations (urgent cesarean section, use of anesthesia during labor, diseases of the newborn, etc.) systematically present a higher incidence of depression.

The forearm ischemic exercise test (FIET) is a very important clinical tool for evaluation of patients suspected to have a metabolic disorder of muscle function. Failure to elevate lactate in blood washed out from ischemically exercised muscles confirms an abnormality of glycolytic metabolism. A normal increase of lactate on FIET is assumed to rule out a disorder of glycolytic metabolism. Two patients with low levels of muscle phosphorylase are presented who produced a normal elevation of lactate on FIET. This suggests that, although the FIET is capable of identifying patients with absence of

Mastitis is a very common maternal complication of lactation and contributes to early cessation of breastfeeding. Therapeutic ultrasound has been proposed as a non-invasive therapeutic alternative and has been added to the latest recommendations aimed at the treatment of mastitis spectrum disorders. In this article, we highlight the successful utilization of therapeutic ultrasound as part of the therapeutic program after the diagnosis of mastitis in a woman who was breastfeeding three newborn children.

This article is a report on a complicated case of delusional disorder in pregnancy and lactation, and effective multidisciplinary treatment. Few reports in the literature concern delusional disorder in pregnancy, or regard olanzapine's safety in pregnancy and lactation. A gravid woman in her third trimester merited twin diagnoses of delusional disorder and borderline personality disorder, and was successfully treated with olanzapine and psychotherapy during pregnancy and lactation. Her infant was large for gestational age (LGA) and had Erb's palsy, which resolved, and remained healthy at six m

This review consolidates current findings concerning the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and clinical characteristics of sleep disorders in women. The discussion encompasses gender disparities in sleep architecture and circadian rhythms, as well as the influence of reproductive stages - including the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause - on the emergence and progression of disorders such as insomnia, restless legs syndrome, snoring, obstructive sleep apnea, hypersomnias, and parasomnias. Special emphasis is placed on diagnostic and therapeutic approaches that address physiological changes

BACKGROUND: Low milk supply is a common problem in lactation, yet it is difficult to study and manage due to multifactorial causes and inconsistent measurement across research and clinical practice.
OBJECTIVE: To synthesize current subjective and objective approaches to assessing low milk supply, including scales and survey items, infant weight trajectories and test-weight procedures, milk expression protocols, biomarkers, and device-based metrics. For each method, we appraise validity, feasibility, and potential harms.
KEY POINTS: In both research and clinical settings, low milk supply is m
