Mercury biomagnification through food webs is affected by physical and chemical characteristics of lakes.

Mercury (Hg) contamination in aquatic systems remains a global concern because the organic form, methyl Hg (MeHg), can biomagnify to harmful … log MeHg versus baseline-adjusted δ(15)N for fishes and invertebrates) varied significantly across lakes and was higher in systems with lower aqueous nutrient/MeHg/chloride scores. This is one of the largest, consistent data sets available on MeHg biomagnification through temperate lake food webs and the first study to use a principal component and mul …

Association of toxin-producing Clostridium botulinum with the macroalga Cladophora in the Great Lakes.

Avian botulism, a paralytic disease of birds, often occurs on a yearly cycle and is increasingly becoming more common in the Great Lakes. Outbreaks are caused by bird ingestion of neurotoxins produced by Clostridium botulinum, a spore-forming, gram-positive, anaerobe. The nuisance, macrophytic, green alga Cladophora (Chlorophyta; mostly Cladophora glomerata L.) is a potential habitat for the growth of C. botulinum. A high incidence of botulism in shoreline birds at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (SLBE) in Lake Michigan coincides with increasingly massive accumulations of Cladophora in …

Spatial gradients of methylmercury for breeding common loons in the Laurentian Great Lakes region.

Much of the Laurentian Great Lakes region is a mercury-sensitive landscape, in which atmospheric deposition and waterborne sources of mercury (Hg) have led to high concentrations of bioavailable methylmercury (MeHg) in predatory fish and piscivorous wildlife. Efforts since the early 1990s have established the common loon (Gavia immer) as the primary avian indicator for evaluating the exposure and effects of MeHg in North America. A regional Hg dataset was compiled from multiple loon tissue types and yellow perch (Perca flavescens), a preferred prey fish species for loons. Hg exposure in loons …

Assessment of the quality characteristics of two lakes (Koronia and Volvi) of N. Greece.

Quality parameters from 17 sampling stations from Lake Koronia and 18 from Lake Volvi were determined during sampling period of one year. Physicochemical parameters (pH, conductivity, DO) did not show remarkable differences neither between sampling sites nor between sampling periods. Nutrient concentrations (nitrogen and phosphorus compounds) were higher in lake Koronia than in Volvi showing relatively small temporal and spatial variations. As far as heavy metals in sediments, lake Koronia is considerably more polluted than Volvi lake especially with the metals Fe, Mn, Zn, Pb and Cd. The mean

Factors affecting enhanced mercury bioaccumulation in inland lakes of Isle Royale National Park, USA.

We investigated factors causing mercury (Hg) concentrations in northern pike to exceed the consumption advisory level (>500 ng/g) in some inland lakes of Isle Royale National Park. Using Hg-clean techniques, we collected water, zooplankton, macro invertebrates, and fishes in 1998 and 1999 from one advisory lake, Sargent Lake, for analysis of total mercury (Hg(T)) and methylmercury (MeHg). For comparison, samples were also collected from a non-advisory lake, Lake Richie. Concentrations of Hg(T) in northern pike were significantly higher in Sargent Lake (P<0.01). Counter to expectations, mean co…

Depth-Resolved Metagenomics Reveals Nitrate- and Sulfate-Mediated Arsenic Transformation in Lake Tosen, a Stratified Saline Lake on the Tibetan Plateau.

High-altitude saline lakes on the Tibetan Plateau host some of the world's most arsenic-rich waters, yet controls on arsenic (As) transformation remain poorly resolved. By integrating depth-resolved geochemistry with metagenomic profiling in Lake Tosen, we identified a redox framework for As cycling that is not fully explained by the Fe-centric model derived from groundwater and freshwater. In summer, oxic-suboxic-anoxic stratification supported three distinct pathways: (i) oxic waters exhibited a microbial detoxification-oxidation loop sustaining As(V) dominance; (ii) suboxic waters were asso…

A comprehensive study on distribution, migration, risk and source of heavy metals in lake, river and salt lake in the largest watershed of the Qaidam Basin.

Heavy metal contamination in high-altitude watersheds of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) has garnered increasing attention due to the region's ecological sensitivity. This study investigated the concentrations, migration, contamination levels, and sources of seven heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn, As, and Mn) in surface sediments collected from lake, river, and salt lake within the Golmud River basin. Multiple pollution indices, including enrichment factor (EF), geo-accumulation index (Igeo), and pollution load index were employed for contamination assessment, while positive matrix factorizati

Organic carbon quantity and composition jointly modulate the differentiation of nitrate reduction pathways in sediments of the Chinese eutrophic lake, Lake Chaohu.

Twelve sampling sites from two basins of Lake Chaohu were studied seasonally from June 2020 to April 2021 in Hefei City (China) to better understand the effect of organic carbon (C) quantity and composition on nitrate (NO3--N) reduction pathways. Serious algal bloom in the west basin of Lake Chaohu (WLC) resulted in higher organic C accumulation and NO3--N deficiency in interstitial water compared to the east basin of Lake Chaohu (ELC), jointly leading to a high C/NO3--N ratio. This triggered dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) over denitrification in terms of higher DNRA rate,

Antibiotic resistance genes in surface water of eutrophic urban lakes are related to heavy metals, antibiotics, lake morphology and anthropic impact.

Urban lakes are impacted by heavy human activities and represent potential reservoirs for antibiotic resistance genes. In this study, six urban lakes in Wuhan, central China were selected to analyze the distribution of sulfonamide resistance (sul) genes, tetracycline resistance (tet) genes and quinolone resistance (qnr) genes and their relationship with heavy metals, antibiotics, lake morphology and anthropic impact. sul1 and sul2 were detected in all six lakes and dominated the types of antibiotic resistance genes, which accounted for 86.28-97.79% of the total antibiotic resistance gene abund…

Eco-morphological differentiation in Lake Magadi tilapia, an extremophile cichlid fish living in hot, alkaline and hypersaline lakes in East Africa.

Ecological diversification through divergent selection is thought to be a major force during the process of adaptive radiations. However, the large sizes and complexity of most radiations such as those of the cichlids in the African Great Lakes make it impossible to infer the exact evolutionary history of any population divergence event. The genus Alcolapia, a small cichlid lineage endemic to Lakes Magadi and Natron in East Africa, exhibits phenotypes similar to some of those found in cichlids of the radiations of the African Great Lakes. The simplicity within Alcolapia makes it an excellent m…

Enriched multifunctional microbes coupling antibiotic resistance risk and nitrogen metabolic potential in eutrophic lakes.

Lakes are facing increasing threats from the dual challenges of eutrophication and antibiotic contamination, yet how microorganisms respond to these concurrent threats remains poorly understood. Here, we conducted a metagenomic binning investigation into the co-occurrence patterns of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and nitrogen cycling functional genes (NFGs) within resistant microbes across three lakes with distinct eutrophic levels. We found a significant increase in the abundance and diversity of ARGs along the trophic gradient. Meanwhile, ARG hosts tended to show a transition pattern fr…

Flow-dominated wet-month total suspended solids loading across Great Lakes wastewater permit units.

Monthly regulatory records can show whether wet periods coincide with greater solids discharge, but mixed reporting bases can obscure the flow and concentration components of the mass signal. We linked U.S. Environmental Protection Agency discharge monitoring reports with monthly precipitation for 675 National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit units associated with publicly owned treatment works in the U.S. Great Lakes basin from January 2010 through September 2024. Reporting-aligned records shared the same permit, outfall, month, monitoring location, and average statistical basis.…

Algal Blooms in Lakes Increase After Wildfire Smoke Events in the Contiguous United States.

Area burned by wildfire has increased in the contiguous United States and in many places globally in recent years, impacting communities and ecosystems nearby and even far downwind of fires. We examined the potential effects of smoke on surface chlorophyll-a concentrations in lakes, as algal blooms can adversely impact drinking water supplies and aquatic ecosystems. We linked remotely sensed surface chlorophyll-a concentrations from over 2000 lakes across the contiguous U.S. with airborne smoke plume locations and densities for 2018. Chlorophyll-a values for each lake were fitted to seasonal c…

Trophic niche overlap between native and non-native fishes in central Anatolian lakes, Türkiye.

The Central Anatolian region of Türkiye exhibits exceptionally high freshwater fish diversity and endemism and is increasingly exposed to the introduction of non-native taxa. We examined the diet composition, prey selectivity and interspecific dietary overlap among eight native and five non-native fish species across seven lakes in Central Anatolia. Fish were sampled using multimesh gill nets and fyke nets, and their stomach contents were identified. In addition, zooplankton and benthic macroinvertebrate communities were quantified to evaluate prey selectivity patterns. Aquatic insects were th…

Invasive primary producers modulate carbon fluxes and associated carbon budgets in temperate shallow lakes.

Lowland shallow lakes are the receiving environments of nutrients and organic carbon from the catchment area. In temperate areas, the synergic action of nutrients and mild temperatures induce carbon emissions from these systems. However, this trend might be modulated by the trophic state of lakes and by their productivity. In this study, we consider blooms of invasive submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) and cyanobacteria as a valuable proxy for eutrophication and explore their role in carbon pools and associated budgets in temperate shallow lakes. We calculated the mass carbon budget of two lar…

Climate-Driven Deoxygenation of Lakes Alters the Nutrient-Toxin Profile of a Food Fish.

Climate change is rapidly altering fisheries supporting aquatic ecosystems. The implications for food security depend not only on harvest biomass but also concentrations of nutrients and toxins in fish. Using brook trout from Adirondack lakes (New York, USA), we tested whether ongoing lake deoxygenation trends will affect fish muscle omega-3 fatty acids, selenium, and mercury concentrations. Across space (16 lakes: 1 year) and time (6 years: 1 lake), anoxia decreased selenium and was associated with elevated fish mercury, with no effect on omega-3 content. Because selenium may mitigate some en…

Anthropogenic contamination sources drive differences in antimicrobial-resistant Escherichia coli in three urban lakes.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an ever-present threat to the treatment of infectious diseases. However, the potential relevance of this phenomenon in environmental reservoirs still raises many questions. Detection of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in the environment is a critical aspect for understanding the prevalence of resistance outside of clinical settings, as detection in the environment indicates that resistance is likely already widespread. We isolated antimicrobial-resistant Escherichia coli from three urban waterbodies over a 15-month time series, determined their antimicrobial

Extreme trophic tales: deciphering bacterial diversity and potential functions in oligotrophic and hypereutrophic lakes.

BACKGROUND: Oligotrophy and hypereutrophy represent the two extremes of lake trophic states, and understanding the distribution of bacterial communities across these contrasting conditions is crucial for advancing aquatic microbial research. Despite the significance of these extreme trophic states, bacterial community characteristics and co-occurrence patterns in such environments have been scarcely interpreted. To bridge this knowledge gap, we collected 60 water samples from Lake Fuxian (oligotrophic) and Lake Xingyun (hypereutrophic) during different hydrological periods. RESULTS: Employing

Key factors influencing Hg levels and trends in unperturbed oligotrophic temperate and boreal lakes.

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic metal that presents a major risk to ecosystems, biota, human health, and remains a priority concern. In temperate and boreal lakes Hg and methylmercury (MMHg) are expected to vary as a function of atmospheric Hg deposition, lake water chemistry, catchment characteristics and climate variables. The aim of this study was to quantify Hg and MMHg in unperturbed oligotrophic lakes and to identify the factors controlling their distribution. We first hypothesized that lake Hg (and MMHg to lesser extent) spatial variations are linked to atmospheric deposition, catchment charact…
