Infectious diseases transmitted by food have become a major public health concern in recent years. In the USA alone, there are an estimated … y to isolate elite phenolic phytochemical-producing clonal lines of species belonging to the family Lamiaceae. Among several species we have targeted elite clonal lines of thyme (Thymus vulgaris) and oregano (Origanum vulgare) against Escherichia coli and Clostridium perfrigens in fresh and processed meats. We are also evaluating high phenolic profile-conta …

BACKGROUND: Traditional medicine is a major component in the primary healthcare system in the southeast of Iran, which has a rich floral div … itional medicinal use of 292 plant species in this region for the first time. Asteraceae, Apiaceae, Lamiaceae, and Fabaceae were the dominant medicinally utilized plant families, respectively. Leaf, flower, fruit, and seed were the most common plant parts used. Generally, crude drugs were used in the form of decoction, followed by poultice and infusion form …

The genus Clinopodium L. (Lamiaceae) comprises perennial herbaceous plants known for their diverse pharmacological properties. Clinically, these plants are mainly used for the treatment of various hemorrhagic disorders. This review systematically summarizes the research progress on the chemical composition, pharmacological activity, quality control, toxicity, and pharmacokinetics of the genus Clinopodium by searching Google Scholar, Scopus-Elsevier, Wiley, Springer, Taylor & Francis, Medline, Web of Science, CNKI, Weipu, Wanfang, and other academic databases over the last decade (March 2015-Fe…

BACKGROUND: Clinopodium chinense is an important medicinal plant in the family Lamiaceae. The desiccated roots of C. chinense possess various pharmacological activities and are widely used in traditional Chinese medicine.
RESULTS: Here we present the first chromosome-level genome assembly of C. chinense, comprising 20 pseudochromosomes with a total size of 0.61 Gb and containing 45,466 predicted protein-coding genes. Genome evolution analyses indicated that two recent bursts of long terminal repeats (LTRs) significantly contribute to genome expansion in C. chinense. Additionally, numerous lar…

Typhlodromus (Anthoseius) recki feeds on pest mites on tomato plants and its introduction into crops via companion plants, Mentha suaveolens and Phlomis fruticosa, has been recently investigated. This study aims at assessing the predator arrestment behavior, through lab choice tests to determine the effects of (i) prey (Aculops lycopersici and Tetranychus urticae) vs Typha angustifolia pollen deposited on companion plant or Solanum nigrum, (ii) T. urticae vs A. lycopersici on S. nigrum and (ii) M. suaveolens vs P. fruticosa using pollen as food source. With growing concern about the possible risks and side effects of antibiotic drugs, more and more natural products with antibacterial activity are studied as the substitutes. In this paper, the antibacterial activity of hydroquinone and arbutin in Ainsliaea bonatii was investigated, which both displayed relatively strong antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (SA), methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), and extended spectrum β-lactamase S. aureus (ESBL-SA). The antibacterial mechanism of hydroquinone had been explored by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), alkaline phosphatase (

This work investigated the effect of Zn excess on growth, metal accumulation and photosynthetic changes in Tetradenia riparia, in relation to possible variations in the composition of the plant volatilome. Experiments were carried out in hydroponics exposing plants to a range of Zn concentrations. Zinc excess negatively affected plant growth in a dose-dependent manner. The metal was accumulated proportionally to its concentration in the medium and preferentially allocated to roots. All the photosynthetic parameters and the concentration of some photosynthetic pigments were negatively affected

This paper records the plants used in the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis due to Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis (L(V)b) among the rural population of a cocoa-producing coastal area of Bahia state, Brazil. An enquiry conducted among a hundred patients identified 49 plants species used to treat skin ulceration caused by this Leishmania species. The principal plants used are caju-branco (Anacardium occidentale, Anacardiaceae), used by 65% of the population, folha-fogo (Clidemia hirta,Melastomataceae) 39%, alfavaca-grossa (Plectranthus amboinicus, Lamiaceae) 33%, mastruz (Chenopodium ambro…

Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease for which existing treatments can be toxic and costly, and resistance to current therapies is becoming increasingly common. This study implemented a systematic review of data regarding antileishmanial activity in plant-derived compounds and used machine learning techniques to train and test a Random Forest algorithm to predict the antileishmanial activity of plant-derived compounds. Asteraceae, Euphorbiaceae, Lamiaceae, and Myrtaceae plant families were identified for their high or moderate antileishmanial activity and nativity to areas of high leishmaniasi…

Two phytochemicals, thymol and thymoquinone obtained from thymes (Thymus vulgaris L., Lamiaceae etc.) and Nagila Sativa seed, respectively. Both the phytochemicals show several biochemical activities like anticancer, antimicrobial etc. In this paper, we studied the affinities of thymol and thymoquinone towards calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) and protein (bovine serum albumin). Spectroscopic and molecular modelling studies revealed that both compounds have a high affinity toward both the receptors; DNA and protein. Both phytochemicals binds to the minor grooves of DNA and suitable pockets of protein. …

Plant sesterterpenoids are an extremely rare family of natural products that generally possess novel chemical structures and diverse biological activities. Herein, we report the discovery of an unprecedented group of minor plant sesterterpenoids, gracilisoids B-E (2-5), which feature two types of highly functionalized bicyclo[3.2.0]heptane carbon skeletons, along with their biogenetically related precursor gracilisoid A (1), from a Lamiaceae ethnomedicinal plant, Eurysolen gracilis. To confirm their structures and obtain adequate materials for biological research, the asymmetric total synthese…

BACKGROUND: Trichomonas vaginalis is a protist parasite that causes trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted disease. Metronidazole is the current treatment for trichomoniasis. However, this drug can provoke severe side effects, and some strains present resistance, making the development of alternative treatments for trichomoniasis urgent.
OBJECTIVES: We investigate the use of essential oil obtained from Dracocephalum kotschyi on T. vaginalis. D. kotschyi has antispasmodic and analgesic properties and is well known in Iran.
METHODS: The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation from 1000

Tectona grandis Linn (Teak), is locally known as Sagwan, belongs to Lamiaceae family. It is one of the most valuable timber in the world, due to its beautiful surface and its resistance to termite and fungal damage. The main active ingredient compounds that are responsible for these action are tectoquinone, lapachol and deoxylapachol. Naphthoquinones, anthraquinones and isoprenoid quinones are abundant metabolites in teak. In addition to these, teak contains several other phytochemicals such as triterpenoids, steroids, lignans, fatty esters and phenolic compounds. Pharmacologically, the plant …
